Robert Shirley. The man, the legend, the awe inspiring footballer who has given hope to a generation of young slow, short, limited footballers.
Lets give it up for this stellar player. No one else in the history of the Adelaide Football Club holds such an illustrious place like Rob does.
Some fast facts that will surely interest you, they certainly interested me:
2 Brownlow Medal votes (currently being investigated).
25 goals at 0.20 per game. Considered by many to be one of the truly damaging midfielders of our time.
More hitouts in his career than goals. Has always been said to have untapped potential as a ruckman. This flexibility is certain to gratify Neil.
Once took 7 marks in a game. One of the best marks in the modern game, better than overrated talls like Brown, Riewoldt and Pavlich.
Averaged 5 possessions per game in his 3rd year on the list. It was then when the average observer sat up and took notice of this ball winning machine.
So folks, with the little picture Ive painted you, where does Shirls, the heart and soul of the AFC, sit within the list of our greatest ever? For mine, there is no one that eclipses this very special talent.

Harsh Drummond, very harsh, had to laugh though:D Shirley has been a valuably contributor as a tagger over the past 3 years since the depature of Stenglein. However, some of your points are quite valid and if he doesn't recapture his late 2007 form then not only will his position in our 22, but his position on our squad will be in severe doubt.

Drummond,
aside from the fact that he will play more games than previous drummond love children, such as John Meesen, sam elliot and Bryce Campbell combined; :) how did you rate his 2007?
Champion data shows he was much, much more effective negator than Tyson Stenglein last season for example. which isn't bad for a player so many people love versus one who is always derided.

Not to disagree with you - but surely the best version to look at a stat like this what a player contributed minus what his opponent contributed, or maybe the effectiveness as a negator added to their effectiveness as a footballer.
It is a bit misleading to compare footballers skills as a negator in isolation without looking at everything else they're doing. Surely Stenglein had many more effective disposals than Shirley.

Seems you forgot to mention Darren Pfeiffer with that list, but maybe that was because Pfeiffer will most probably play more games than Shirley.
Stenglein has had to play a far more attacking midfield role due to the significant absences of Judd and Cousins during various stages of last year and especially now as both arent at the club. This is evidenced by the fact that Stenglein averaged 22 possessions last year , while the two years before (obviously playing a more defense role) that averaged just 18 and 16.

Drummond you are a disgrace.
I have always respected your opinion being a Norwood Supporter myself but you have just gone too far here. Yes Shirls doensn't have the talent that Simon Goodwin or Andrew Mcleod have but he has more talent on his little finger than you.
He came second last year in hardball gets behind Hudson. Thats right Drummond second.
Every side needs a Rob Shirley type in their side otherwise we will be a team full of receivers..

Wow, Drummond might be right once out of a million times, lets give him a medal for his achievement, it might not be a great achievement considering he has an opinion (mostly always negative) on everything the crows do, so its understandable he might get something right at some point.
But I don't want to take away from Drummond's clear victory here, in being right once, and recieving a medal, perhaps he can go inspire his Norwood duds to victory.

This is an embarrassing thread. Absolutley no need to try and belittle one of our players in such a manner. You have only belittled yourself and given amunition to Rucci and others to tar all Adelaide supporters with the same brush.

Drummond. The spud, the legend, the awe inspiring simpleton who has given hope to a generation of young slow, heartless, Norwood duds.
Let’s give it up for this stellar poster. No one else in the history of Bigfooty holds such an illustrious place like Drummond does.
Some fast facts that will surely interest you, they certainly interested me:
• Actually right once (maybe) (currently being investigated).
• 9,427 whinging, negative posts at 9.06 per day. Considered by many to be one of the truly depressing posters of our time.
• Bags more players/coaches in his career than praises. Has always been said to have untapped potential as a door stop. This is despite being a member of BigFooty during a time of success by the crows.
• Once took his medicine for bagging out Bernie Vince. He is one of the best back trackers on Big Footy , better than overrated back trackers like Fightingdreamer88 and SpringChoke.
• Averages 5 proclamations that he will leave and stop supporting the Crows if they select/don't select X-Player or if they lost Y game, per year in his 3rd year on Big Footy. At the same time never following through on his baseless threats, just continuing the bag the club and rarely saying anything positive. It was then when the average observer sat up and took notice of this whining machine.

He's been a willing servant and valuable contributor in the past, but his main problem now is that he's lost a yard of pace and now runs at ruckman-like speed.
That's bad enough in a star player who can often still demand a position due to other special skills they bring to the table, but when it happens to a fringe player its usually the death knell for their career.

Very sensible post.
It also needs to be remembered that Rob won the coaches award last year, best team man the year before (from memory) and was nominated for the army reserve award for courage last year (from the Fremantle game - again from memory).
Of course, this was decided upon by the coaching panel and his team-mates who's knowledge of the team and players, I assume, is far greater than Drummond's.
He's down on form at the moment - he's not the only one that has/will suffer a form slump during his career.
Maybe give the guy a break, stop sinking the boot in and start supporting your team/players.

Surely, we're better than this - I think that there's a better way to criticize players and offer opinions on their status within the club, than to simply bag and denigrate them

Every team has got to have them. :thumbsu: While there is no doubt Shirley is down on form at the moment, due to injury he maintains his spot. Once we get a fully fit Knights and Reilly back, he would probably lose his spot unless he can pick up his form.

He shouldn't be in the team at the moment. He is taking the spot of a Dangerfield, Kite or Ottens who would gain a lot more out of playing some games early in their career and getting exposure at the highest level. This would enable them to be an regular AFL player quicker than sitting on an emergency list week after week.
Shirley has already cost us 4 premiership points this season (pathetic and gutless attempt at palming a ball on the goal line against the dogs).
In fact when he was out injured we won and as soon as he comes back we lose. At the very least he is a bad curse. If we are serious about developing a young list he should be delisted today and a rookie promoted. Unfortunatly he is one of NC's favourites who he shows blind faith in week after week.

The bloke in bold is ****ing awesome. Incredibly cool and a supreme athlete. Lets take this topic in a new direction and praise this divine being:
fightingdreamer88. The god, the legend, the awe inspiring son-of-a-gun who has given hope to every generation of those needing a pin-up hero, and has kindly offered to liberate his inferiors from themselves.
Lets give it up for this true embodiment of perfection. No one else in the history of Bigfooty can lay claim to its throne as fightingdreamer88 does.
Some fast facts that will surely interest you, they certainly interested the champ:
Is universally loved (was investigated, found to be so true that it makes other examples of the truth look false in comparison)
100% average rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Stays positive about the players and is generally right with his assessments of their future.
Once took his medicine for a cold. Was cheered on to recovery by devoted followers SpringChoke, Roosterlad and Gets.
Averages infinite positive feedback from fellow posters on the calibre of everything he does.
Hope you enjoyed that :p
Also, I did laugh at Drummond's post but it was always going to cop this flak.
While I absolutely agree that Shirley's form this year has been ordinary and I don't necessarily think he deserves his spot in the side at the moment, this is pretty harsh on the guy. When Stinger left we had no other taggers in the team and through 05, 06 he performed the role reasonably well. He managed to turn his game around and get the best out of himself. I think he's been lucky to get a game this year but lets not attack the guy. After all it is the coach and selction panel that keep picking him. Question that decision for sure( and I too am surprised by his selection), but don't personally attack him.

Whether Shirley plays well or poorly, he always puts in 100%. Always.
I have never seen him shirk an issue. Never.
