View Full Version : When Will Collingwood stop making up the numbers?
For years now they hover around the fringes before falling over their own feet.
How many times have they made a Prelim or a semi and simply fallen over. For a club that has the best of everything off the field continually fail to get the best out of themselves on field.
Is Mick Safe?
Should they re-build. Feel free to post your thoughts and I will eventually display my divine thoughts.

Ipoint you to the semi final in Subiaco last year.

I point to your last premiership coming 18 years ago. :o

We were a kick away from making the Grand Final against the best side seen in recent years last year. We played abysmally against the Dogs the year before that. Our list is what I'd call workman like - yes, there is some talented players on their, but it doesn't have the same class like a Geelong or St Kilda.
Apart from that we lost 2 Grand Finals, and pretty much hadn't been sighted before that.
No, we shouldn't rebuild, however, we do need another tough inside mid and maybe a little more pace. We will be there and abouts again this year.

I know my history as well as the next football follower.
So when exactly will Collingwood stop making up the numbers?

Whilst I am not happy with our lack of premiership, to say we've 'fallen' over is a fallacy, we have fallen over once (OK twice, 2003 was a disgraceful effort)
I think we could win it all this year, but the Cats look very strong again, and the Hawks appear to be an impressive unit. Can we push them? Well, we pushed Geelong twice last year, so who knows?

When Malthouse stops his reactive delistings and builds a team that gets to settle.
Great coach, but how you can delist any player from the best 22 after a decent season is beyond me.

Rupert Betheras comes to mind, even Guy Richards while not the best player pretty high on the fringe to be delisted.
Everytime Collingwood loses finals players get delisted that were good enough to be part of those finals teams.

Richards wasn't good enough to be part of any finals teams, once we secured Wood's services i was more than happy to get rid of him

Richards was useless, he clearly needed to be delisted had been on our list for seven years and did nothing. If he was a half decent player we might have won the Geelong final.

Not a good player I agree, but if you're high enough on the fringe to be playing a prelim, you'd think that you'd be useful to keep around. Especially as ruckmen aren't exactly common. Just seems a little rash is all.

After 7 years i hardly think it was a rash decision to get rid of him, obvious that he wasnt going to improve any further and were better off getting rid of him

He wasn't up to AFL standard, was only playing because of Frasers injury and our lack of ruckman at the club. After we recruited Wood, he was no longer required, now we have Fraser and Wood with Bryan as back up. I think the fans would have been far more angry at MM if he had kept Richards. I agree to a point about Betheras, loved the way he played, but he wasn't exactly a skilful player and if I recall he didn't get many games in 2003, the year he was delisted.

Didn't you trade off a guy good enoguh to be a grand final ruckman for pick 90 or so?

Yeah we did. But King was very lucky to get that game, don't get me wrong King was great, but it was his 3rd game for the year if I remember rightly. For salary cap reasons, one ruckman had to go, and with King's age/injury history/large wage Vs Blake's improvement/lack of injury, unfortunately King was that one. In terms of games, King was much more fringe than Richards.
I really rate Malthouse as a coach, but it just strikes me that he delists better players after Collingwood loses finals then he does other years. But I'm happy to be proven wrong. I'm sure I don't look at Collingwood as close as you guys do.

Not really - just showed that Malthouse gave little respect to ruckmen and didn't bother keeping decent ones around :thumbsd: Now that we have Wood, and Bryan as backup, Richard's services were no longer required.
