This thread is dedicated to all those poor sods who cop the ill informed crap from some very limited members of this board. Robert Shirley is a prime example of the sort of guy who is instrumental to the success of any team in the AFL but gets bagged by the less intelligent members of their supporter base. You would think that those who bag the Robert Shirleys of the world must be the top of their game in everything they do, but surprisingly they are usually very average in most facets of their lives. Except their ability to abuse people far more talented and dedicated than themselves. Either way, this thread is dedicated to recognising that no team is made up entirely of superstars. And every successful team includes those who bust a gut for their teammates and put themselves on the line week in and week out, unlike the sad losers who abuse them.

Robert Shirley, I salute you. You may not be the most talented guy to pull on the Crow's jumper, but you have busted a gut every time that you're out there. You are more talented than any of the people posting on this forum but less talented than the better players in the AFL. You have made the most of what you have and may have passed your use by date. But only time will tell.

Anyway, this thread it for those who are sickened by the type of supporters who boo their own team. Be it Shirley, Perrie or whoever. Reminds me of the time I was at the 1998 Grand Final and almost got in a brawl with some idiot who abused Vardy every time he got near the ball. Every supporter base has these losers and I guess the genuine supporters have to wear these idiots. I'm sure the people like Rooch love them.

Drummond aside, most of us aren't bagging Shirley out for his career as a whole. However, we struggle to see the justification for his selection based on the form he has shown in 2008.

Shirley has been our #1 tagger ever since Stenglein departed the scene. He's given his blood, sweat and tears for the club and deserves to be recognised for this. Certainly the coaching staff have recognised his efforts, as can be seen by his showings in the Club Champion voting. I would like to add my own voice to the chorus of those in celebrating his career achievements.

But right now, he's more liability than asset. He's badly out of form, seemingly having lost more than just 1 or 2 yards of pace over the summer. This is why so many of us are calling for him to be dropped from the team. Not because of any deficiency in him as a person, just because he's out of form.

Vader, I don't think anybody should get a free pass to play for the club if they are out of form or somebody else offers a better fit for their role. I just hate to see people abuse players from their team. Seems to defy the whole idea of being a supporter. This post wasn't meant to suggest I think Shirley deserves his spot in the team right now. More that I am disgusted by how some people turn on players. I guess I'm the sort of person who thinks supporting your team means not booing your players. And I'll keep getting in arguments with people abusing our players at the game.

I'd agree with you there. No AFL player deserves to be abused in the way which some players are. Particularly one who has given his all for the club in the way which Shirley has.

Good old Shirley, a hard worker. Kudos to you Rob, but alas your days are numbered.

He is not moving like he used to so it's off the agenda. I maintain it would have worked though, a little while ago.

He certainly isn't getting around the ground like he used to. Fitness, who knows but his days are numbered.

Just about sums it up for me. I think he could pull through the bit of a slump he's in at the moment, however the loss of pace is a real concern. Lets hope its just due to a niggling injury and he'll pull through but the minute he's genuinely holding back the development of a young player due to overly conservative selection my tune will change.

Although Robert Shirley only turns 28 this year, he is seriously considering retiring at the end of this year.

His contract expires at the end of this year, and he's not expecting it to be renewed, because of the amount and quality of the youngsters who play mid-field on the rise.

Robert Shirley - honest player - honest in all respects. :thumbsu:
