The soundtrack to the movie 'Electric Dragon 80,000V'

It's kind of garage/dub/ambient/punk loaded with dirty guitars, metallic "clangs", garage drums sounds, and the occasional distorted Japanese vocals.

"Homesick and Happy To Be Here" by Aberdeen.

For those people who liked the Sarah Records sound, Belly/Tanya Donnelly's stuff - it's very pristine and pretty, a gorgeous CD. But then again, I'm totally biased because Beth from Aberdeen is an old pal of mine. :)

Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love

Not really impressed. Bought Electric Ladyland last year and Are You Experienced? a month or so ago, and loved the songs, but there is still very little to convince me that this guy should be revered as a guitar god. The latter two I mentioned are great rock albums, and have many really good songs but the guitar playing is solid and timely without being spectacular. Axis on the other hand, has been thoroughly disappointing.

Carcass - Swansong

Found it for $14.99, had to invest. Not bad at all, but you can tell Micky Amott is no longer in the fold. The riffs are starting to get too catchy. ;) Seriously though, it's a pretty good CD and still rocks as hard as most other stuff, but I don't think it rates up there with Heartwork or Descanting The Insalubrious

Can't remember which one, but there is one where he gets into this hilarious rant about U2 - he just gets stuck into them. I always remember the line, "Why would someone fly from one side of the world to another just to write "I HEART U2" on the side of a wall?" - it's just the way he says it that has me in stitches.

However, on the downside, there are too many rants about his w@nking habits.

Shinners, that's on "The Boxed Life" which is a great double CD with some very poignant and thought-provoking rants. Hank does tend to get a little self-indulgent though, and seems to milk the fact that he is viewed as a very intense character.

I like listening to most of his spoken stuff (not his music), but saying "f*ck" a lot and being covered in tattoos does not make someone "intense".

Darky, I've listened to some Hendrix that is real crap as well. Hit and miss with that guy. I must tell you to get 'Live at Winterland.' A live performance, and without doubt the best playing he ever did. It establishes him as a guitar god. He plays his standards but embelishes them with bluesey take-offs. He keeps time, and his note choices make sense while at the same time being "Hendrixy" in origin. Pure magnificence.

What's more, if you prefer his radio friendly tunes, they are all on there - only better. I myself prefer live work to studio cuts. I have loads of Hendrix, and I'm not trying to brag but I can play live Hendrix better than he could on some nights. Not Winterland though. That show was his ultimate achievement. Peace,

Oh, and I suppose to answer the thread - I bought the best of Steve Vai. I've been expanding into 'shredder jazz' and I wanted to steal a few of his ideas.

He's not intense, he's just a friggen certified loon!

Mooster, for interest's sake, I'd say my favourite Hendrix tracks are his blues numbers like Red House, Voodoo Chile (both takes), Come On (Let The Good Times Roll) and some of the not-so-comercial tracks like Crosstown Traffic, Third Stone, 51st Anniversary, Remember...

I've always liked a lot of his songs while not being too amazed by his playing, and I'm listening to a lot of his stuff of late. A mate from work is also a big fan and is recommending stuff constantly.. hopefully I'll build up the back-catalogue over time.

He's also a hypocrite. On one rant, he'll talk about his depression and unhappiness at life. In his next rant, he'll slag off the English (and in particular, Morrissey) for their depression. It seems that it's okay for him to be self-indulgent with his depression, but nobody else is.

Yep. And I remember reading this incredibly self-indulgent by this g.ay anarchist punk poet about "Wanting to f*ck Henry Rollins" - proves the point that by using the word "f*ck" a lot does not make you deep and meaningful.

It seems the pilgrimage to JB HiFi at Highpoint is becoming something of a Sunday habit.

Stretched the credit card limit to the max purchasing Uriah Heep's "Demons & Wizards" and Dream Theater's "Images and Words" and "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence".

Shinners, regarding Rollins... I dragged out a couple of his spoken word CD's the other day... my favourite rant of his is about Ronnie James Dio. "Any album featuring the singer Ronnie James Dio will have between one and three [i]evil woman[i/] songs"...

Funny because it's TRUE!!!

What a co-incidence. I was at JB HiFi (City Store) and I bought a couple of CDs as well....."The Smiths" and "Meat Is Murder", both by the Smiths to replace long worn out cassette copies of them.

And doesn't Henry idolise Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy. My favourite Rollins rants are the ones he makes about U2. Like his Ronnie James Dio ones, what he says is funny because it's so true. ;)

Hmmm....nothing to do with the 90s and everything to do with paying the artist for their work. Oh, and I like cover art and reading liner notes and that sort of thing too. Okay, it's very 90s then.

Although there is that grey area of making mixed CD-Rs for friends. Hum.

J-Ded - Too Much Hide
John Butler Trio - Three

Both are awesome. J-Ded is an Adelaide band, who are gonna be big... bit of a mix of Silverchair, Helmet and Muse. Interesting mix, indeed. As far as JBT is concerned, **** me, that's the best Australian release of the last 5 years.

I saw J-Ded at last year's Big Day Out and thought they were great.
I'd read an article in the paper about them the day b4 and thought it would be worth checking them out.
Well worthwhile.
It was funny looking around the assembled throng and there weren't that many people - but it was obvious that half the crowd was their family. It was funny to see.
It's great to see them doing well.
Another Adelaide band doing well are Brunatex.
I listened to their new cd release the other day. Excellent stuff.

1. My collection of 7" singles released by Sarah Records is much more important to me than my Smiths records.

2. Vinyl is better for cover art and inserts, but CDs are just too convenient.

3. Ross Oakley had more to do with killing Fitzroy than what the Roos ever did.

A Certain Mr. Jobim by Antonia Carlos Jobim. I haven't put this one on yet, but I'm a fan of that whole Brazilian samba-jazz sound. It's a reissue and it's bound to be good.

Favourite tracks for the month:

Charlottesville 1997 by Charming, Take Ecstasy With Me by the Magnetic Fields, Throw Aggi Off The Bridge by Black Tambourine, You Should All Be Murdered by Another Sunny Day, Bringing Up Baby by Talulah Gosh, and CK86 by Sweet William.

A Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay
The Invisible Band - Travis
Parachutes - Coldplay (had it before but lost it somewhere!)
All that you can leave behind - U2
The Man Who - Travis

Been listening to A Rush of Blood to the Head, The Invisible Band and By The Way almost constantly, all great albums, I haven't really got to listening to the others yet. It took me a while but I've been really getting into By The Way over the last couple of days, there's a lot more melodies and more mellow songs than their early stuff but the Chili's still have it, IMO they're unable to release a bad album!

More kitschy Brazilian samba-jazz stuff (cheap too) with "The Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim" and "Love, Strings, and Jobim", both by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Burt Bacharach, eat your heart out.

In the last few days I've bought

Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf
Gary Moore - Scars
Dream Theatre - Images And Words
Lifehouse - Stanley Climbfall
Bon Jovi - Bounce
Rolling Stones - Forty Licks

Easy to forget just how good the Stones were. I've never bought an album of theirs, but this greatest hits double CD is great, 40 songs and hardly a crap one amonst them. And have all the best known stuff as well, unlike some 'best ofs' that leave out some popular songs because a band had changed record companies over the course of their career.
