View Full Version : WAFL Report - Round 5
Well, I'm excited and it's not just because swannies held on to win by 5 points against the Falcons, but a couple of the Eagles boys showed some very good signs.
Ryan Davis - I will not forget your name and call you Craig ever again, I promise. This guy seems a genuine hard nut, not as hard as Beau but you get the picture, coming off the HBF or out of the pocket. Runs hard at the ball and to set up play. Took some very good marks under pressure in the last line of defence and set up good attacks from defence. Was as his best in the first 2 and a half quarters, but then all Swans petered out a bit after that. Would have to have been in the best 3 or 4 players on the night, I believe. Really good game. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:
Tony Notte - well, we saw why Suma rates him as highly as, well himself. Very quick on the lead, great hands and I saw a new dimension to his game tonight, the Naitanui leap. Not seen much of this from him before but he tried to take a couple of skyscrapers tonight. Incredibly agile for his height, kicked 2 or 3 goals and should have had another but for what I believe to be an umpire error, but hey we won! Was thrown into the ruck for extended periods tonight to rest Naita and did a servicable job against Warnock and Kuenen. In the second quarter he went for a pack mark, landed on his feet, crumbed the ball himself and slotted the goal from 45-50m. This guy could be a sensation! Lasted the game out a lot better than the past couple of weeks. Another good game. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

He does have a very good leap
I remember in the U18 champs last year when he went in the ruck against Kruezer and Sullivan - totally avoided body contact hut used such bloody good timing of his jumps (these were around the ground ruck contests) that he was still able to win the tapouts.
If he can put on the weight required (12-16kg's) over the next 4 or 5 years he is going to be a very special forward.

Wow, sounds good. I know he is a twig and will probably snap, but if Tony Notte keeps up this 3-4 goals a game, Woosha might not have a choice...he'd have to give him a game!
cheers for the wrap chrsco, just a quick one...how did big Yarran and Nicknat go?

You see Suma there?
Sat next to him in the stands. Was impressed with Notte's game, especially the front and square snap from 45 into the breeze. That was special.
Not sure he'll get a game even if he does put on a kilo here or there. Listening to Suma talk to his Cronies, the woodies were there too, Notte lacks that extra 5% to the contest. Instead of hitting a contest at full speed he tends to prop. And as Suma went onto explain that extra confidence will come from the extra kilos when they do eventually come on.
So unless he eats a horse or two I cant see him playing until the end of the year at the earliest.
What did you think of Jeff Gartletts game?

No I didn't see suma, but my wife saw him leave. I was at the fence next to the members area trying to manage a feral 7 yo, who doesn't take kindly to Swans losing. He was getting very stressed.
That goal of Notte's was a pearler.
Glad you asked about him, because he impressed me more than Yarran last night. I liken his chase downs to Davey, his closing speeds are sensational. Yarran did some special things, at times, but Garlett chased long and hard all night. The interplay between Naita and Yarran on the 50 in the first was sensational wasn't it?
SOS, NickNat was pretty good considering I thought he was shepherded/tunnelled in the ruck a lot last night. His around the ground, roving efforts were very good I thought.

It all makes sense doesn't it.
I really hope the coaching staff don't get impatient with Notte and try and play him too soon. You'd think he's a couple of preseasons away from a decent playing weight. I'd rather we sat him in the WAFL until mid-late next year at the earliest, unless as you suggest he swallows a horse in the mean time
Saw the first quater of Peels league game last night and WOW Brad Ebert you STAR. Dominated.

Mind describing his game ?
Where he got the ball
i.e. in a pack and fed it out, intercepting marks across half back, contested marks at half forward, hand ball receives on the edge of traffic
how his composure was - did he think quickly and dispose of the ball efficiently, did he look a little lost, did he choose the right option when he did dispose of it, was he tackled ?
How was the defensive side of his game, did he stick close to an opponent when Claremont had possession of the ball or did he zone off
His composure was supurb , his kicking into the 50 to his forwards set up many scoring shots , from what i saw he wants to get his spot back into the 22. But also only saw the first quater. But when checked the paper today they listed him as peels best player.
where would you say garlett would go in the draft. Give us a ballpark figure
Oh gee, make me put my neck on the chopping block, but I would say round 2 to 3, at earliest.
Saw the first quater of Peels league game last night and WOW Brad Ebert you STAR. Dominated.
Now I know what he was doing at Joondalup on Friday night, learning how to play on those cold, slippery nights! He unfortuantely, witnessed my 7 yo's dummy spit.
Perth v Subi
Will Sullivan - not as good as his first game but still, he's overworked in a team like Perth, with very little support. He was still very good, I thought, especially his taps and in the second half he probably started to get more around the ground a bit more and get into contests at ground level. Developing pretty well I think.
Scott Selwood did not play, so have the eagles held him over or is there an injury?
Just in case anyone asks - Daniel Rich, does what he does best, drifted in and out of the game, much like Yarran on Friday night, but bobbed up to kick a couple of very nice goals. Adam Cockie, for mine, was more impressive, but he has more to prove. We all know Rich can play, but Cockie's work ethic is great for a young kid and he's hard at it.

some good news. Sam Butler was interviewed on the big screen at the game and he said that he will be playing WAFL next weekend. We should turn him in to a winger and take advantage of his excellent skills and judgment. I'm predicting a round 8 comeback to AFL assuming the injury gods have mercy.

Can't wait till we get to see him running around the WAFL, hopefully he has not lost any of his class over the past few years of injuries.

Based on stats Wilks had a good game. 9 marks to go with 25 possessions. Did he play as a CHB? FWIW I am still not overly sold that we have a good long terrm CHF as the players that seem to play that position are slightly undersized (Hunter) or lacking mobility (Graham).
Could Wilkes be that man or do we just give it to Spangher?

Spangher showed what he is capable of at the weekend but I would like to see Wilkes in there too. Hurn and Nicoski should be relived of their defensive duties, Selwood should play more of an attacking midfield role, Waters should play across the middle also.

But Selwood plays that tagging role so well. Who else would take his spot as a tagger?

It was only his second league game after coming through reserves from injury though. He'll get better, just needs to find his feet.
TBU, thanks for the stats again. The sporting pulse ones I looked at didn't have the I50 stats, so I must be looking in the wrong place.
Oh, and I'm looking forward to seeing Butler at Basso on Friday! Hope he goes alrright, without inflicting a loss on the Swannies of course.

WAFL report: round five
Author: Mic Cullen 5:02 PM Wed 23 April, 2008
NOBODY is surprised that Subiaco hasn't slipped up – many are tipping the Lions to win their third flag on the trot without losing a game. But Claremont – last year's minor premiers and losing grand finalists – out of the top four? And Peel Thunder in it?
It's great news for the club from the estuary, which has lived in the lower reaches of the ladder since formation just over a decade ago. Brad Ebert was terrific in the midfield for the Thunder, despite a heavy tag.
West Perth 16.9 (105) lost to Swan Districts 16.14 (110)
Tony Notte (SD): Tony started at full-forward opposed to Fleay, who played on him all game when he was alternating between full-forward and centre half-forward. Tony spent time in the ruck in each quarter and was at his best in the second quarter, kicking two goals, one a snap and the other from a set shot into a very strong breeze. He was at his best in first half and his work rate was solid.
Ryan Davis (SD): Ryan played half-back and back pocket on Longmuir and while Longmuir kicked two goals, Ryan had the best of the battle and was a strong contributor for his team. Ryan is always prepared to roll the dice and run down the ground and that is a great part of his game. His run and dash to carry the ball and clear the lines a real feature. He worked hard all game, used the ball well and his decision-making was good. Ryan played with great desperation, made some strong tackles and good spoils.
Peel Thunder 17.16 (118) d Claremont 18.8 (116)
Brad Ebert (P): Brad played on-ball with some spells deep in Peel’s forward line. He was good in centre clearances and stoppages around the ground. He ran hard defensively and offensively all game, and his disposal was generally very good. A great result when he was tagged all game by two opponents.
James Thomson (Cl): James played his run-with role with confidence and kept S. Rosa to 15 possessions. Rosa has been a dominant player for Peel over the last month and James’s competiveness, discipline and work rate restricted Rosa’s impact on the game. His decision-making in close and disposal by hand continues to improve.
Beau Wilkes (Cl): Beau’s good form continues – he had 18 possessions in the first half and was the dominant player on the ground. Although he took several strong marks, he needs to continue developing his awareness and positioning in contested marking situations. Beau’s desperation is a trademark of his game and was again evident in this match.
Lewis Stevenson (Cl): Lewis did not get a lot of ground and played at half-forward or on a wing when he was in the action.
Pat McGinnity (Cl): Pat had a big assignment against Ballantyne – the leading goalscorer in the WAFL - who is very good on the lead and in contested marks. Pat did a reasonable job and certainly played with intensity. Pat generally used the ball well and he remained aggressive at the contest the entire game.
Will Schofield (P): Will played across half-back and was dragged deep later in the game. When around the ball he was very clean with his hands and took the opposition on with a strong run and carry. Will’s agility and awareness enabled him to get through traffic and break tackles effectively, his ball use and intensity were good and he should continue to look for opportunities to run hard offensively to provide an option.
Eric Mackenzie (Cl): Eric played on Buszan and smothered his impact on the game for the first three quarters. Buszan out-bodied him a couple of times in the last quarter, but this was a solid effort considering his interrupted pre-season program.
Perth 6.10 (46) lost to Subiaco 16.14 (110)
Will Sullivan (P): Will played in ruck opposed to Newick and Hay, two seasoned WAFL campaigners, and he did well, especially in centre-bounce work. He finished the game with 16 taps and was particularly effective in the third quarter. He found good space to be used and was more accountable to his immediate opponent. A number of times Will showed some excellent second efforts to assist his teammates. Displayed a very good work ethic and never gave up trying.
East Perth 9.10 (64) lost to South Fremantle 20.8 (128)
Callum Wilson (SF): Callum played at centre half-forward against Hancock for the first three quarters and against Martin in the last term. He opened strongly with four kicks, four marks and a goal in the first term, but did not have the same influence in the last three quarters. It was still a solid contribution from him, although not dominant.
Jaymie Graham (SF): Jaymie played at full-back in the first and final quarters and at centre half-back in the middle quarters. His opponents were Noakes and the resting ruckman. Noakes is often the playmaker up forward for East Perth and Jaymie restricted him to one goal and no influence on the game. Jaymie's efforts to position his body in a contest, also his movement to receive the ball and use of it was good. He was steady in defence throughout.

All sounds very promising.
