I'll be watching on the TV with great interest.

I'll try and put up a little report at the end of each quarter to keep the masses informed.

Will be interesting to see how a few of the boys go considering that they know they're pretty close to a senior call up.

Also, with reports that Gibbs didn't train and might not play, will be looking out for someone not playing today that might come in as a late change for Bryce tomorrow.

No Benitck, looks like he'll be playing for the Blues tomorrow, which I'm sure will make many of you happy.

Also notice no Hampson? Anyone know any goss about him not playing - was he in the Bully magoos or not playing this weekend?

Hartlett and Ellard look good. Aisake looks like poop - haven't seen much of him in the past, does he always play like that? Is that why people on here rate him so highly? Hope he has a better next 3 qrts than his first.

Ackland pooed himself in that qtr time melee. Big girl. Played alright though.

Ackland getting killed as is Aisake.

Loved Armfield's tackle in the first quarter, the player had about 3 or 4 steps on him but Armfield caught him and got the free. Browney has been good, loved the set-up to Colbert where he plucked it out of the air and beat a few, kicking it straight onto Colby's chest. AJ has been great, showed some great pace in the first quarter out-running everyone.

Harts has been good on the lead, taking 6 marks so far and kicking 2.1.

Good game so far.

Since I started watching:
-Hartlett's been a class above.
-Edwards has been clean with his hands and disposal. Looks like a player.
-Ellard is working hard but lacks skill.
-Jackson's had some good touches.
-Aisake has zero intensity which is disappointing.

The rest have been relatively unsighted.

Harlett has dominated to half time. Setanta will be feeling the pressure. Edwards needs to present more, as when he does, looks very good, just doesn't do it enough.

Aisake a little better that qtr but still very disappointing.

Bullants pressure, chasing and tackling has been excellent.

My thoughts at half time:

-Harts very impressive. Presents brilliantly and continues running down the ground to present an option and to chase. Has a massive kick which doesn't seem to have been affected by the injuries too much, and he's accurate. Keep this up and he'll be stiff not to be in the team next week.

-Edwards looks good but been a little quiet. Is playing deep forward. Looks like he works really well with Harts up forward. Pressure is pretty good.

-Browne started brilliantly but dropped off a bit. Hopefully he has a good 2nd half. Great courage and pretty good skill. I like him a lot :thumbsu:

-Armfield pretty quiet but can't help but be impressed by his efforts. Should have kicked a goal right on half time but was a shocking kick and missed from right in front, 20 metres out.

-AJ looks a goer. Pretty tough and quick, disposal a mixed bag. Impressive return thus far for a rookie.

-Jacko getting a lot of it and in a lot of the play. Disposal a bit iffy at times.

-Ellard impressive. Looks to me as though he could become more than a forward pocket. Knows where to go but again, disposal sometimes lets him down.

-Benjamin very quiet, playing on a man down back and then moved up forward in the 2nd. Out on the full from a tough set shot pretty much all he's done.

-Austin very quiet. He's rough and might turn out OK but needs to get involved in the play more.

-Aisake very disappointing. Getting spanked in the middle and having close to no impact around the ground. Needs to lift his intensity.

-Ackland started pretty well. Getting a stack of it early and filling the hole down back. No impact in the ruck whatsoever though.

-Wiggins getting a lot of the ball and looks good but disposal is shocking.

That's all the Carlton listed players I can think of off the top of my head.

Elevate Joseph and Ellard. :D

Joseph was a human clamp when he pinged a former AFL player in Thurley and knocked the ball free.

Thurley kept going and then broke Bransgrove's tackle when he got his hands on the ball again.

Great tackle from Joseph. :thumbsu:

Edwards reminds me of a young Hamill with his size and defensive pressure because he puts his body in.

Ellard's defensive pressure is great for a slip of a player.

Austin will be a unit and a CHB like Maguire when he ran down the ground to have a snap on the run.

Missed by a hair's breadth.

Ackland went to the same ruck school as Fraser and jumps early.

Aisake tapped it down and roved like Kreuzer.

Nice pass on his left.

Great effort in defense when Aisake tapped out into the path of a teammate to clear the ball from the backline.

Jackson didn't go the first or even the second option and is up against to make it as a tagger.

Even though he's only 17, there isn't much of Cornelius.

He appears to be the same height as Fisher because he's shorter than Austin.

They appear to be playing Pagan's game plan under Teague. ;)

Top effort that, Gilly. I had to watch the game from a hot-spot cafe in Brunswick Street where I am waiting to have my car un-clamped. Luckily I know a few people in the area and through a clever combination of angled bathroom and car mirrors I managed to get vision right from PP to my table, the final link coming off the Citroen's external mirror. I picked up the radio call on the internet and enjoyed good coffee and a salaami focaccia at half time.

Only saw bits of the game, in between mowing the lawns, and having a nana nap on the couch. The 2 guys that did impress today were Joseph and Ellard. Ellard is just so dangerous around the goals, and very clever with his field kicking. Joseph is a real terrior, who's kicking has improved heaps since I saw him train a few months ago.

Also thought that Hartlett and Edwards played solid 1st halfs as well.

Why was Benjamin played as a defender?

Clint looked more comfortable when he got a kick up the ground on the wing than down back.

The thing I like about Ellard is that he's a hard worker. He may not be the most talented individual at the club but puts in 100% all game. If a few other players had his attitude today the Ants would've won by 100 points.

After watching that game it occured to me that we lack depth big time..there was not one player that would force his way into the seniors on performance alone.
Wiggins was the best player with his clean disposal standing out in a team of players bent on butchering the ball at every opportunity .

Hartlett started out in a blaze of glory and then totally disappeared for the remainder of the game .
Benjamin has a go but cannot kick a football to save himself.
Those players need a lot more game time in the ants before they could be considered for senior selection .

IMO he should be given 6 weeks at CHF for the Blues.

Cornelius turns 18 in May and was rated as a potential top ten pick.

Cornelius isn't any taller and bigger than Brad Fisher and would be a third tall/lead up forward if he doesn't grow.

He's no Mitch Thorp who 6'5" and splitting the pack for Tassie the year he was drafted.

Don't think Cornelius has enough size for WH....he isn't a flanker, and not really big enough for a tue KPP in today's game.....third tall forward a-la Jack Riewoldt (minus the workrate) for mine which will see him slide down the order a bit IMO. Although I have been bitten on the arse before for making calls this early in the year.

No player from that game showed they are ready for AFL selection although there are some things to consider. Wiggins was easily BOG and would be next in line for a call up, got a lot of the footy, covered a lot of ground but was unpolished with some of his disposal but generally ok.

The Bullants played a shit style of footy based around Dennis Pagans game plan which is no surprise seeing their coach was coached by Pagan all of his career. The game was congested with no one creating space and constant predictable long kicking to contests. Like how Carlton have been playing in previous years.

The ants failed to run the ball out of defence, failed to link handball and use forward hand passes to move the ball forward in attacking style. Coming out of defence was almost always done with a long bomb, easy for opponents to read. Lucky Tassie were fairly weak up forward and the Bullants had some talent there.

The midfield was always congested, even around the wings where teams are meant to open it up, the Bullants failed to make space and open it up for their runners. They failed to utilise running players by having no structure in the midfield.

The forward line was littered with talent but was also congested and unstructured for most of the day. The ball was delivered up forward via long bombs constantly. More so as the game went on. Leading forwards would have no hope here!
The goal kicking was unacceptable at any level, disgraceful!

Jackson battled on, played on the ball all day and didn't seem to have the fitness to do so. Was exhausted in the last quarter but still did alright. Appeared to be closely marked, looked a bit sluggish and lethargic with not much intensity (like Houlihan), not what we need ever! Was pushed off the contest a bit due to his lack of size. Not ready yet, needs pace if he lacks strength at contests for AFL. Has good ball handling and disposal and youth on his side, worth sticking with and maby giving a go.

Aaron Joseph was about the most promising with his pace and skill, looks like a potential AFL player and worth keeping an eye on. worked hard in a team who play a style of footy not suited to his running type.

Benjamin was ok, rarely sighted though but had defencive responsibilities, would be more suited to a more open game, seemed to have been instructed to kick long and did so often, someone not showing faith in his kicking ability? Will never learn how to kick passes by bombing away all the time as all Blues fans have seen.

Browne showed a lof of courage and intensity as always, not ready for AFL yet, probably needs to develop his fitness levels to that standard so he can get to more contests and play more on the ball. A hopeful future prospect.

Hartlett had a good first half when the team ran the ball and used short kicks and delivered passes to the forwardline instead of bombs. Would be better suited to AFL. His kicking at goal wasn't very good but then again Fevs wasn't when he was young to. Due to Carlton lacking a tall forward and O'hAlpin not doing quite enough he may be considered.

Edwards was rarely sighted and played second fiddle to other tall forwards like Teague, Hartlett and Colbet. Once again, not suited to the ball being bombed on his head but didn't do enough for selection. No wonder he said it was easier to get a kick at AFL level!

Ellard showed enough that he might make an AFL player. Showed good pace and smarts, once again would do well in a more open game, worth keeping an eye on.

To develop players for AFL you would think they should be playing an AFL style of footy, also they won't have a chance of beating the better sides playing like that!

My opinion, the ants need to work on their disposal and couldn't do enough ball handling as this was poor under pressure but it is only VFL. Too many handpasses hit the ground before they got to their targets, handpasses lacked penetration and power. Goal kicking was disgracefull at any level of footy. Need to work on linking and running the footy out of defence. They need to work on opening up the midfield for players to lead and run into. Use more short kicks. The forward line will function better when the players delivering the footy are closer to their targets...
So basically adopt the General AFL game plan, style and structure and dump the ancient Pagan style.

IMO get the players with good pace like Ellard, Joseph, Benjamin, Anderson and Armfield on the wings and forward flanks playing up the ground in the midfield, open up the wings by lining up the spine and running wide and let the run fest begin (Like good AFL sides). The Bullants are using these players as stoppers or small forwards. Give them space, set them free, let them run...

Don't know if its been mentioned, but I read today that Ellard actually played half a game in the VFL reserves before playing in the VFL seniors last weekend. Good effort to be one of our best on ground after a playing a half game prior.
