View Full Version : Is Burton gone?

Scrappy win today and Burton helped us over the line (not that the goal after the "mark" near the death meant anything to the result) but will he be gone for next week's game.

What I refer to was his trip of a Dockers' player in the second half. The Birdman attempted the mark but the ball was brought to ground and he was stuck in a 2 on 1 situation where he was the 1. As he was getting up, he grabbed a Docker boot and prevented the guy from going anywhere. The umpire ignored it and the commentators didn't notice it, but it might be picked up by the MRP. Should we be worried?

I only saw it on TV, but my first thought was it was a deliberate trip. As to if he will be sighted, who knows?

Commentators on the radio noticed it.. Not sure whether or not he'll be done for it though.

Not sure if tripping by hand is a reportable offence. It's usually just a free kick.

Tripping by foot is definitely reportable, with two players done for it last week alone.

I thought it was more of a hold than a trip.

I thought at one stage he was in preparation for a figure four leg lock.

He did not actually got through with the trip in my book.

No longer reportable, he's fine.

I look forward to further Birdman games where he does the brilliant only to stuff it up. I think it is how he maintains his equilibrium.

Sure he had hold of the players boot but IMO the trip wasn't there....

No report but shouldn't it have been a free kick plus an automatic 50 metre penalty? I thought that was the penalty for giving away a free kick intentionally in that manner.

The player that Burton had hold of (Dodd) got a week for the exact same thing last week.... Got downgraded to a reprimand.

Both are a joke to even get sighted by the MRP, so hopefully they don't make another stupid decision and suspend Burton.

Law 19.2.2
Any of the following types of conduct is a reportable offence
(g)Intentionally, recklessly or negligently
(iii)Tripping another person whether by hand, arm, foot or leg

Why come in and spoil our conjecture with cold hard facts?

When has Burton last been reported? I can't remember ... surely it would just be a reprimand if that?

Not that i think anyone on the MRP looks at these forums, but i wouldnt have thought starting a thread about one of your own players tripping another was a good idea.

Bringing more attention to something one of your players might get suspended for is not what id do anyway.

Yes good way to kill a thread is with facts.

Tripping by hand is supposed to be an automatic report. I don't consider either incident to be tripping because the players supposedly tripped were not really moving when held by the leg, they were just taking off.

Yes, being cited for this is a joke, but to be consistent Burton has to be given some penalty. Dodd got off the suspension but I think he still has some residual at the tribunal because of it. If the MRP can't get it right, then consistency is all we can ask for isn't it?

Consistency from the MRP/tribunal. What a novel concept.

Dodd who he tripped was reported for the exact same thing last week and received a week before appealing and getting it downgraded.

Should not be a report (neither should have dodd's last week) but was a disgrace not to be a free kick.

Just another one missed today

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain the last time Burton was reported was for striking Dodd at Subi a few years back. Ironic, huh?

On tripping, what did people think of Farmer on Bassett in 3rd quarter. I wasnt sure at the time, and still not sure.

Wasnt a report i dont think, but certainly should have been a free kick. You cant dive at someones legs and up end them.

Even worse as it resulted in a goal.

I'm no Farmer fan, but it wasn't even worth a free. He didn't dive at Bassett's legs, he dived at the ball a lot harder than Fred did, and won possession. Was exceptional, desperate play by Farmer, and pretty shit play by Bassett, who really should have attacked the ball the same way Jeff did. Wouldn't have coughed up a goal if he did.

Wasn't that bad, IMO. Bassett went for the toe poke, Farmer went for the ball. If anything, Bassett could've been called for kicking in danger. (If they even call that these days??)

*shrugs* I would have paid it in one of my games.

I guess my viewpoint is shaped by the way theyve shaped offences these days though. The idea of a duty of care for the players changes the whole 'whos attacking the ball' philosophy for me.

It was a poor handbal by Truck, (I think) which resulted in Fred being under pressure, and Far,er winning the ball. I initially thought no, wasnt a free, but I guess it depdns on the individuals interpretation. Farmer went in feet first, straight at his legs.

It's a problem though.

Players do it because if they take possession of the ball, they get done for holding the ball; and if they go in head over the ball, there is a chance they might hit the other guys head and give away a free.

So because of two stupid rule changes/interpretations, we now have players diving/sliding into the ball.

Surely it'll only be a matter of time before someone has their leg broken or knee done as a result.

I agree completely :thumbsu:
