It appears the game we love has been revolutionized, modernized and superior spectacle in comparison to yesteryear.

However I am so disappointed with the coverage of the game.

I am not sure where to start. I welcome others to contribute and assist.

Channel 10: Heres a clue if the commentators know how much time is remaining, the coaching staff and even astute TV viewers with a stopwatch why do you still insist in the final quarter in not showing a countdown in the final quarter. Another point how about increasing the size of the font of the scores. Note that is the one constant I want to see through out the coverage and not to be taken off at no stage, as you do when you show inside 50's etc. The commentary team is ok, but what about a strong SA and WA flavour.

Channel 7: Get rid of Watson and the other boundary rider. How about showing the Friday night games live. Its a joke. I dont enjoy watching any delayed matches. This is the 21st century we have access to all forms of media we need live access, its a joke.

Foxtel: Oh dear. Im tired. Someone else please assist. League Teams is good. The live coverage of games is pathetic. The camera work lacks all forms of professionalism.

Channel 9: Footy Classified is good. The footy show is good too, it has a spot as an entertainment show, it is NOT a football show and should be treated accordingly. The footy show has a niche for those that enjoy a laugh or two, but it is not a serious show for football followers.

I am sure there are more complaints, I request others to fill me in.

I think the cricket coverage is good when you make a comparison to the way AFL is covered. Or for that matter the English Premier League games are covered in a far superior manner than AFL has ever been.

Tony Shaw gave me the shits tonight. Everytime we got a free kick (rarely) in the last quarter he crapped on about how soft or the fact the free wasn't there. Yet he thought it fabulous the way the Fremantle playing gracefully flung himself out the pack to get a soft free against Bass.

Also, the fact that he read from the script at the end to say who had won....was he paying attention at all? Woeful at best.

He also slated the umpires for giving a 50 against freo after they slung a Crow player who marked the ball to the ground in the dying minutes - a 50 every day of the week. The umpires have no appreciation for the state of the game he said. Since when does that change interpretation of the rules? They scream for consistency one minute then say the rules should be relaxed if the game is close.

Unless you count Malcolm Blight and Bruce McAvaney there is no SA prescence on he box.

That said I'm not really sure who you would have on here.

Be good to see a decent South Australian broadcaster come through, in my oinion they are all average, that includes radio too.

You are way harsh on Foxtel. I think their commentators are all good, they have no ads during the quarters which in itself is reason enuf to love them and they are the only ones who can appreciate that sports fans want to watch the action LIVE!

If it wasn't for them we would only get the Adelaide and Port interstate games live and possibly not even that if there was an important ep of Home and Away or the Biggest Loser on. If Foxtel had a choice I am sure they would show Friday nite games live, it is only the pathetic commercial stations that nonsensically deny us this basic right. Fox show the Fri nite games live in the northern states but are not allowed to here, it's rubbish.

The camera work is not great but it is a much more difficult sport to cover than soccer or rugby. I must agree tho that the coverage of the EPL by Fox is nothing short of outstanding, every game live, I love it. Will probably happen to the AFL eventually if they can secure all the rights but it would cost a fortune and a half.

As for the commentators, I am not a fan of the Ox or Watson, they seem superfluous to requirements. Olarenshaw on the boundary tries hard but he needs lessons in clear speech. Buckley has been the find of the season for mine. He is not a South Aussie but he has some appreciation of the football culture here too which is great. His insights into the game are outstanding, whatever he says is worth listening to.

Trouble is Bass did put his hand over his shoulder. The fact that it was milked is all credit to the Freo player.

Rick Olarenshaw must be the worst boundary rider I have ever seen on TV. Needs to take lessons on interviewing technique and general pronunciation for TV.

I would settle for a commentator that doesnt get every second players name wrong.

Just a note to Bosley, the English Premier League is broadcast by Sky Sports and generally they do an outstanding job. ESPN's coverage of the FA Cup and Champions League though is sub-standard in comparison, Derrick Rae is alright but I'd take Tony Shaw and Tim Watson over Tommy Smyth and Janusz Michallik any day of the week.

I like Tommy Smyth ... he is hilarious.

I must say commentators have never really bothered me, just like there are fans and players you are not going to love there are always going to be commentators as well ... I must say Don Scott is the exception, he was universally loathed.

As far as the soccer coverage, Fox are giving a Viewer's Choice option for the ACL games Wednesday night like they do for the EPL ... super stuff!!! Altho I will be at Hindmarsh anyway for the big game :)

The AFL isn't the Premier League. It isn't even close to the Premier League.

Agree with you on Buckley, he's great. One of the few special comments men who can actually string together a sentence and clearly articulate what is on his mind. The only problem, he makes Schwarz look like a bigger moron than usual when they're working together. He sounds like such a meathead in comparison with Bucks.

The last 10 minutes of the game yesterday, the commentating was a disgrace - flat out barracking.

According to the commentators, every single free was got in the last 10 minutes was wrong, everyone Freo got was right, and they should have got another half dozen.

Shaw is an idiot, and their failure to even know who our players are was a joke.

The best bit was when Bernie Vince centred it from the boundary line.

Tony Shaw: Good centre there by Goodwin.
Glen Jakovich: I think it was actually Van Berlo
*Replay shows every pore on Bernie Vince's face. Blatantly Bernie Vince.*
Tony Shaw: Yep, sorry, good spot there Jako. Well centred there by Van Berlo.

My favourite part was when, in the third quarter, the boundary rider (I forget who it was now...) predicted that Pavlich would find some space and and smash us, resulting in a comfortable Freo victory.

It's thanks to in depth analysis like this that makes tuning in to the footy such a joy.

These comments are for WA consumption so as to disquise the fact that since joing the AFL the standard of WA football has fallen from the sky like a stunned mullet. Forgive him, he probably had no idea that Pavlich did his apprenticeship in the SANFL, if he had he wouldn't have said anything.

The funniest thing from the commentry position that had me in stitches was the "Go Cows" signs in the crowd that had the Vic commentators in convollsions about moronic SA footy fans not being able to spell. Total silence as egg appears on face once educated.

I think you guys are being a bit harsh. I enjoy Tony Shaw's commentary and comments for the most part. Jakovich I would have to agree tho doesn't seem to be cut out for the media.

As far as knowing all players though, I know it is part of their job, but it must be incredibly difficult to try and know every player from every team, especially considering you see 30-35 players from most teams throughout the year. I am still often confused when one of our blonde tip / rinse brigade goes after the ball as to who it is and I have been watching Adelaide games almost exclusively since their inception.

On the subject of fauxs pas, Garly Lion started FC last night by pumping up the draw between the Kangaroos and Richmond until Caro corrected him. There was also an umpire in one of the games who called a player "Dale" instead of "David" or something which one of the commentators picked up. I don't know how the hell the umpires remember the names! I have have enuf trouble remembering the names of people I work with and see every day!!! :)
