View Full Version : Bendigo Bombers next year?
This was reported in today's Bendigo Advertiser that the Bendigo Diggers VFL side is looking to merge with another team and they have had talk's with Essendon and another club, both of which have shown significant interest in the idea. Thing's that would need to be discussed are the name. The jumpers, of which teams have indicated they coulde be flexible. The number of games to be played in Bendigo, which the Diggers want to be between 7 and 10.
Another option that has been touted is the possiblilty of channel 7 buying the team and using the Diggers in a similar situation to the Hammerheads
Personally I would love the Diggers to merge with the Essendon VFL side. It would be great for the Bendigo region to have them play up here.

Phil Cleary has been pushing this rumour for weeks but getting Carlton to merge with Bendigo and Essendon with the Bullants, that makes more logical sense
Well I'd love Essendon to merge with Bendigo, would be great. But, even if it's Carlton that they do merge with would also be alright for Bendigo with Carlton having their zone here once.
nooo it's the only time i get see essendon play at windy hill! if they merge with bendigo how am i going to do that? i'm too young to remeber the good old days!

Northern Bullants had tried to go it alone, but it's impossible for them to survive next season unless an AFL club gets involved.
When I was living in Bendigo, many years ago now, it was Carlton's zone; so that would be a logical one. Bendigo needs an AFL club on board if it's going to survive. The days of stand-alone clubs in the VFL seem to be over.
Just an update, Bendig officials met with Peter Jackson and one other guy last night to discuss possible arangements of a merger. But they are also talking to 2 other clubs, one being the Bullants as discussed, the other being North Ballarat.......please let them have Carlton instead;)

Lethal, there could be some good news for you. Got this email from the Bombers today:

BOMBERS, DIGGERS CONTINUE DISCUSSIONS
Tuesday, October 01, 2002
The Bendigo Football League and its affiliated Clubs, the Bendigo Diggers,
Essendon Football Club and Football Victoria met this morning to discuss the
possibility of a relationship between the Bendigo Diggers and Essendon Football
Club. Talks were productive and revolved around finding an acceptable formula
for interchange of players between BFL sides and the proposed new entity to be
called “the Bendigo Bombers”."
BomberSpirit, that was actually front page of the Bendigo Advertiser last Friday. It also said they should announce it this week sometime.:)
The Bendigo Football League has agreed to the terms of it in that they get the choice of when to play their game in Bendigo in that they would get first prefernce of a Saturday game over a BFL club on the QEO. The logo which was also shown on the front page was the Essendon logo with Bendigo in its place, but also incorporating Bombers unerneath. It was also blue and gold, the colours of Bendigo.
Just an update. The Bendigo Footy League has decided not to support the merger between the Diggers and the Bombers:mad:
It'll now mean the Diggers will have to most likely fold. Stupid ****en BFL:mad:
Don't know if it will complete dissolve talks between the 2, but it doesn't look good:(

Looks more and more like our stand-alone VFL side will remain, for at least next year anyway.

Hey, I'm fricken happy about this. Heard the news earlier today and are excited about it, of course that would have everything to do with living in Bendigo:D
Will prove to be a great PR exercise for Essendon, and will good financial rewards through increased memberships. Pity Carlton didnt come to their senses earlier to maintain their old 'zone. Good luck to the Bendigo Bombers :)
