When the Eagles weren't handballing in various shapes and patterns today (ie: the 2nd and 3rd quarters), we showed signs of the premiership team we were in 06.
Woosha MUST have changed his gameplan at 3 qtr time - how good was it to see them play a FREE FLOWING 4th term with positive forward motion with long, direct kicking.
Get rid of the ring-a-ring-a-rosie handball game for good!

The game plan was changed before the first bounce......not at half time.;)
Look at the qrt time stats 49 kicks - 40 handballs.
We did look alot better at times using the kick, I mean if we no longer have the foot speed to break the lines you can always kick fast and flat over them............:o
We definately were kicking in a more flat a direct manner our skills however were rusty............too much hand balling practice maybe.
Masten made a couple of blues but as the game progressed he started hitting targets by hand and foot.
We stuffed 3 or 4 kicks out of the full back line that turned over to goals and we lost by 25.
We licked 16 goals...........if we hand't dropped our heads in the 2nd and cleaned up our skills that could have been a win.
Kids got a good run.

i thought we looked good allthough they were still a couple of good passages with 5 + handpasses
the handballing wasnt even the problem, it was the kicking...we had to rely on a player like masten to actually hit up a leading forward.

Heard on the radio after that for the last two weeks at training a lot of the match simulation type drills have been scrapped and the big focus has been on skills work.
Hopefully we will see the results of this work in the coming weeks.:thumbsu:
Cant kick goals with your hands.
Simple really.

Umm, we were handballing... a lot. But we were handballing to players moving forwards which allowed them to kick, rather than handball.
The handball plan is effective if you do it right. If you do it wrong, it means more handballs and more trouble.

Exactly.
The key was running in numbers (much like the 2006 finals). The handballs were to running players who could kick on the run, who have momentum allowing their kicks to have flatter trajectory (less flight time) and better depth/penetration i.e. less time for the opposition to cover defensively. What usually happens is the handball is to stationary players, who rush a kick of one step which leads higher trajectory and less depth/penetration i.e. more time for the opposition to cover defensively.

Exactly. Handballing is effective when players are running and their workrate is up. Our workrate wasnt great for yesterdays game except for our 15 minute burst in the last quarter.
i really do hope our next game we bring the last quarter with us and dismantle the bulldogs. i think its really about time the boys got up and got a win. beat the bulldogs and we could be 3-4 after the carlton game.

You were only playing against traffic cones in that last 15 minutes.

certainly looked more deadly with lynch playing up the ground and kicking it in quick to a REAL marking target in Cones Hope he keeps his spot as he will only get better! And how good does Mckinley Look :thumbsu:
