View Full Version : Ins and Outs for Round 6 vs Port Adelaide

Well King is definitely out injured :( devastating as he's been ripping it up and Lade and Brogan are the best ruck duo about. I doubt Kozi and Blake will be relied on solely for ruck duties so I'm guessing we'll need another ruckman. If Gardiner is still out I'm guessing it'll be Rix, or possibly McEvoy (dunno how ready he is). Apart from that G-Train will still be out after Charlie Gardiner's good performance, if Schneider is ready he'll be back in, maybe for Jones? Can't remember when Baker comes back from his disgraceful suspension, but if it's now he'll come in for Dempster probably. Other than that there should be no omits IMO, if Schneids and and Baker aren't back it should just be King for Rix/McEvoy straight swap. Thoughts?

Gards should be back to come in for King, apparently Rixy pulled out of the casey team today, so may not be available next week. So that leaves Kosi, Blake or McEvoy to fill the ruck.
Jones would be unlucky to be dropped.
Harvey, does he travel, or would he be rested?
I would have,
IN: Gardiner, Schneider, Baker
OUT: King, Jones, Blake/Harvey

I reckon we'll need Blake until King and Gardiner are both in the side at once. He can plug holes as a ruckman and I don't think M Gardiner/Kozi will do the job, Gardiner won't be able to ruck the whole game and Kozi is too valuable up front to spend lots of time in the ruck.
Anyway did some searching and M Gardiner, Baker and Schneider should all be back, so I'd go for:
In: M Gardiner, Schneider, Baker
Out: King (hamstring), Jones, Dempster (omit)

I agree - I had Gehrig in as forward with Koschitzke spending most of his time in the ruck, but Blake is probably too important as backup for basically any position, including the ruck.
With Baker back in the side, Gilbert may get a break (has not been at his best lately).
If Schneider is fit (they have been very conservative with bringing injured players back in), I suppose that Dempster or, as much as I would regret it, C Gardiner could be out.
Isn't it great to have a whole lot of options - compare that to say the first game against the Hawks last year !

Is King definately out? I thought his injury was not as bad as first thought (i.e. he had a back spasm rather than a strain)?

I was going to be critical of the omissions that some of you have chosen for next week but if Gardiner and Schneider are fit and Bakes is rushed straight into the team as he should it's going to be a very difficult decision. It's great to see a player like Jarryd Allen standing up for the Scorpions with 6 goals today. Mini was best on ground again. Come the end of the year he might have played himself back onto our senior list which would be a great effort. Anyway back to the original post, it would have to be King and Jones left out. I reckon Gilbert would be dropped before Dempster as well.
Dempster played a good game.
He held Lovett nicely...and kicked a good goal. Too many Saints cannot kick goals on the run...and he did.
PA has the Burgoyne's to control.
No way will Dempster be omitted.

I think it's Allen's chance to make his name - kicked 6 over the weekend and would stretch the PA defense.

I was thinking drop a tagger for a tagger, Baker in for Dempster but now that I think of it Leigh Fisher, Dempster and Baker can all play in the backline. I agree Dempster doesn't deserve dropping, but then neither does anyone really, we don't have any stand outs atm which is good. Based on the post above I guess we can say:
Out: King, Gilbert
In: Rix, Baker
And then Schneider in for someone (Jones?) if he's ready and the possibility of the Train and/or Allen returning up front (dunno who you'd drop though)

I would be dropping L.Fisher before Dempster at this stage as well. L.Fisher doesn't offer any attacking dimension at all, complete stopper and thats it. Whereas there is a attacking dimension to dempster and baker. Thank god Bakes is back this week - he is a shoe in for Ebert. The thought of L.Fisher on Ebert is cringe worthy, Dempster will fill a run with role in the midfield - possibly Rodan

I'm so sick of this. The Cats and Hawks have lists deep like the ocean and we go and lose a couple with more not ready to come back. Looks like G-Train is gonna have to slot strait back in hopefully firing fresh.

Let's hope the hype over the new injury system has some merit. After all, with the injuries continuing anabaited, it is an awful lot of cash to waste.

22 Apr 2008, 09:54
Gilbert was an impact injury. If King and M Gardiner are out this week, they are both soft tissue, but they will be our only two injuries for the week other than Gilbert. X Clarke, Dal Santo and Harvey have all copped impact injuries over the last two weeks. They are not doing their hamstrings at training, like they used to.
It's just that King and M Gardiner being out at the same time hurts us because it's an area we have been weak in, and you can only carry so many ruckmen on your list. We have four, plus Koschitzke.
M Gardiner or Rix in for King, Baker in for Gilbert, and Schneider in for Jones if fit.

Absolutely. Rix spent enough time on the ground last year to prove a point. That point being that he is not good enough.
If we play Mc Evoy, even if we lose, some good will come of developing a young player. With Rix we just lose.

It's a shame about Gilbert. I don't think he had set the world on fire this season but he's got a great future in front of him. He'll be back.
I think we're all fairly unanimous in the belief that Baker has to come straight in and if fit Gardiner and Schneider will return as well. If Gardiner isn't right to go I'd lean towards bringing Gehrig back and playing Kosi in the ruck before bringing Rix or McEvoy into the team. One isn't up to it, the other isn't ready. Do we really need to throw McEvoy to the wolves (Lade and Brogan) at this stage of his development?
Let's not get too downbeat over the injury situation just yet. We've still got the vast majority of the playing list up and running. As Punter said you can't do anything about the injury that Gilbert suffered. Dal Santo seems to be OK so we've currently got an injury list of 4 players and none of which (except to Gilbert) is likely to keep them out for more than 2 weeks.

Who from StKilda would man up on Tredrea, Westhoff, Motlop & Ebert?
I'm thinking possibly:
Tredrea - Maguire
Westhoff - S Fisher
Motlop - Hudghton
Ebert - ?? - Possibly L. Fisher or Goddard, but they need to be quick and must be good in the air, so I can't pick who you'll play on them all.
It could very well be hudghton that plays on Ebert, and a more agile player on Motlop, but I'm not sure cause Motlop is equally good in the air.
I dont think you'll waste Hudghton on Tredrea or Westy because the others can cut them out just as well.
How do you guys think you'll man up on us?
We'll no doubt go,
Chaplin -> Riewoldt
Carlile -> Gehrig (Who'll most probably be back in)
Thurstans -> C Gardiner/ Kosi (When he aint in ruck)
Surjan -> Milne

I don't think Sam will go with Ebert.
I would have Max on him, and Sam Fisher might go to Motlop.
Don't forget that we have the inclusion of one Steven Baker.
He has been asked to match up with an Ebert type in his past...
The Punter

Max has usually got Tredrea when they have played, but that would mean Maguire would have to go to Westhoff. I prefer Goose further up the ground because of his long kicking. Max to Westhoff and Goose to Tredrea.
I think Baker or L Fisher goes to Ebert, and S Fisher on to Motlop.
Any truth to the news Riewoldt has strained a muscle in his buttocks? If so you guys are gonna be seriously low on talls with King out and Gardy not ready... surely big Fraze will be back in if this is the case?

All those people saying goose on motlop or Ebert arent thinking straight.
The Port players wont bomb it long to a 1 on 1 contest, they will spot Ebert/Motlop on the lead.
And goose is too slow for them.

Westoff - ???? possibly S Fisher and move L. Fisher or Baker onto Motlop
As for ins and outs, i dont think G train should come straght back in.
I think its time for Allen to get a go, he is a great forwad but can play in other pozzies, not just a one pozzie player such as G Train.

Pretty obvious that Koschitzke & Riewoldt are the keys to this game.
If Port's inexperienced defence can hold, well I reckon my Power has a good shot at winning
However if your 2 guns fire up, it'll be a difficult night for Port.
Anyway, good luck, come over enjoy the game & avoid the minority of idiots that follow every team.

I'm not quite sure what to think of this...
Great to see Baker back. His suspension is and remains a joke and he should be on fire.
Gehrig may have serious problems against quality backs like Glass or Scarlett, but would have been a real problem for a young and inexperienced Port defence (and I assume that Koschitzke will spend some time in the ruck). But good to see that C Gardiner kept his spot.
I like the emergency list - other young players had their chance, some took it and it apears that Lyon will give other younger players a chance.
On the other hand he appears to be strict with those who did not take their chance (R Clarke and apparently Jones - both, however, could be useful in the predicted rainy conditions). I feel sorry for Jones, however, others had far more time and his dedication and courage is undeniable.
Rix - well, I don't know, he hasn't been too impressive last season and really appears like a one position only player. But I guess that he deserves a chance, too.
Birss - not sure how he did with Casey, he is always capable of a solid, consistent and mainly reliable performance, maybe that is what Lyon is after against speedy Port.
Also - disappointing to see that our injury list is growing and players who were on "should be ready this week" for several weeks (M Gardiner, Schneider) are still out.
Well, I have neither been to watch Casey over the last weeks nor have I been to watch any training session lately, so I trust that Lyon and his team know what they are doing.
Go Saints !

Rix is in. He will probably get more taps than raph, but raph would do a lot more on the ground. Probably the results on the scoreboard would be the same if Raph was our ruck. ( Not that I don't rate ruckmen, I just don't rate them if they can't do anything else ).:D

I was leaning towards bringing Gehrig back into the team and playing Kosi in the ruck but against a ruck duo of Lade and Brogan I can certainly understand the rationale of having at least one genuine ruckman picked for the game (even if some of us do question if Rixy is up to it).
As for the other ins, absolutely rapt to see Bakes back in the team. His suspension was a disgrace and while his match fitness will be down you know what you are going to get from him every week. I'm not convinced about Birss but his excellent form in the VFL seemed to force Lyon's hand. I'm really happy to see somebody do that so I hope he can have a big game for us.
Hopefully King's injury turns out to be no more than two weeks. His form in recent weeks has been exceptional and has made a massive difference to our midfield. Gilbert started the season slowly but he's young and has shown a lot of potential so he'll bounce back from the shoulder injury later in the year. Jones was a bit unlucky I thought. With Rix replacing King and Bakes always returning, he was effectively a straight swap with Birss. I'd like to see CJ go back to the VFL and really demand inclusion as Birssy has been doing for the past month.

They have made the right choice in putting Rix in against Brogan and Lade.
I would rather have Rix going against the stronger bodied ruckmen than Kosi getting pounded all night.
Lade and Brogan haven't had a massive impact this season (from what Ive heard). So hopefully Rix can do his bit.
Hope Birss can prove a point too, I like kid.

Having a look at past matches, Robert Harvey, Lenny Hayes, Sam Fisher and Leigh Fisher all seem to do quite well against Port. Whereas for Port, Brendan Lade and Kane Cornes seem to do quite well against us.
This match will be a tough affair. Port were brutal against Adelaide in their showdown match. "The Crows started the third term with only 20 fit men and that was reduced to 18 when Kris Massie (hamstring) went straight down the race and was followed by Jason Porplyzia (shoulder) who collided with Brett Ebert."
The next match Port led by 47 points deep in the third quarter against Brisbane when one of those horror runs (if its against you) occurred, Brisbane just gained the momentum to create a 67 point turnaround and win by 20 points. The players were complacent after leading comfortably all night.
Last match Port played away to West Coast. They led by 68 points early in the last quarter before the Power conceded seven goals in 15 minutes. Port held on to win their first match of the season by 24 points.
Returning from Subiaco on a 6 day break, Port are susceptible. The Saints travel for the first time and after an 8 day break we may hold the edge in fitness come the last quarter.
As long as St Kilda have a full bench to rotate and the players are kept at a reduced fatigue level, we should be able to run out this match as victors.
The big question marks include Rix v Brogan / Kosi v Lade in the ruck, the players tagged by Baker, Fisher and Birss and the defenders matched to Ebert, Motlop, Westhoff and Tredrea.

If our skills aren't up tonight, we will lose. Brogan and Chad Cornes basically ignore their men and will chop poor kicks off all night.
Rix had to play, and I hope he is fired up. Maybe Allen will play (or Blake plays forward) to free Kosi to the ruck - it looked all wrong when Kosi when to the ruck last week and it was Roo and some small forwards.
Maybe they can spring a shifty and get Sam F in front of the sticks - would like to see it but hurts not having Gilbo as tall cover (although we still have Max, Goose and BJ).
