View Full Version : We are Number 1 in Marks and Kicks
After 5 rounds we are easily leading Marks Av'ing 127, eleven clear of next best. This is no doubt somewhat due to our preference for foot over hand (and our recent use of tempo) - we are no.1 in Kicks Av'ing 228
Where we really have to improve is Handball (running) - we are 13th Av'ing 125 but a long way behind 12th (139) and the Cats are numero uno with an Av of 189! (and still 2nd in kicks) while the other ladder leader Hawthorn are second with an Av of 169 Handball

We've really adopted the short chipping game plan in the last couple of weeks. If I recall, we tried the tempo footy earlier in the season or might have been preseason, but were killed with our footskills. Good to see that area has improved, although after 3 minutes of chipping around, I do not see the point of then bombing it long to the top of the goal square.

We need to focus on becoming the number one team for semi-contested short/long left foot kicks to advantage across the reverse side of the centre corridor.
Winning a few more games would be nice too.

But to do that we will have to run (handball) more !!

Agree. This is the only reason we're topping those stats rendering them meaningless. Contested ball wins, centre clearances and marks inside 50 are the real stats.

I think it was the Saints game.

We were murdered for inside 50 marks today.
Generally handball stats are a good indication of how much you are running

carrazo today seemed to just hold it up alot, and would rather kick back to keep possesion than to kick forward to a 50/50 which is what the better teams do, they just back their team mate to win.

Wouldn't mind seeing an increase in our play-on from mark/possession percentages. :thumbsu:

Doon't waste your kick on him, save it for Shaun Grigg who really needs it up the backside.

You'd expect to be #1 in Marks and Kicks given the bullshyt chip to chip gamestyle we play.

I can't remember ever being more disinterested in an AFL game in years. Hardly any exciting play whatsoever. I agree that the chip chip style is shit, does my head in. We'd have been smashed against a half decent side.

Not much point bombing long to packs when we don't have a J Brown/S Kernahan/W Carey in the side. Ratts is using a gameplan that can be successful with the side we've got and the conditions we're playing in - against Melbourne yes it was chip chip chip because they flooded like a bastard, but we played quicker, more flowing footy against the bombers because they didn't.

i just love the way we're playing finally we have a modern gameplan and dont just bomb it long in hope kudos to ratts....with more confidence in the gameplan and a more settled side will start to see more run and carry as well but i cheer everytime we chip it around, tempo footy is a must in todays game.
I think playing like essedon is just unsustainable, players get fatigued and then are buggered and cant run out the game, so i dont think we wont too much run and carry, there needs to be a balance.

I much prefer a kicking style of game plan over a run and handball.
A mark and play-on style of play! Just awesome to watch.
Someone find me a player who can run faster than a 50m stab kick.
Also, I would rather see our boys chip the ball around and create a goal over just bombing the ball into the F50 ala Dennis Pagans game plan.

It is sustainable - see GEELONG
Carlton av228 kicks av125 handball
Geelong av220 kicks av189 handball
We must run and carry more
