Just reported on Cahnnel 10, and although not confirmed his career is over, definately out for this week.

If the big man does retire :(, who should be given the captaincy?

For mine, Cam Bruce should get it for the rest of the year. Brock isn't ready, nor is Jones, and Bruce is a standout among the leadership group. I'm not suggesting he remain captain next year, but for now, I see no other real contender. Robbo? Miller? YZE:eek:!?!?

Marks a new beginning I think for the MFC.

I know Brad Green is out of the leadership group but there has been no better leader on the field this year then greenie. Bruce and Green co-captains until the end of the year. McLean and Jones need another 3 years. Perhaps Jeff White is an option also?

Mcdonald as care taker captain till one of Bate, Mclean or Jones have shown they are ready to shoulder the responsibility and stand up in big games

that or we do the no captain thing

If he retires mid year we'll quite likely share it between the leadership group for the rest of the year. The problem is that half will be at Sandy :(

MFC will apply for Neita to be put on the long-term injury list.

Maybe Shane Valenti will get a crack.

Junior to take the mantle, he bleeds for the club. This is just getting worse and worse:( But on the plus side hopefully Valenti shines!

Let's be as positive as we can guys - this injury, as much as we hate to see the big fella go down like this, presents TWO big opportunities for players at the club.

One is for someone to stand up and be a REAL leader within the team. Green showed he can do it on Sunday although we need to see it on a consistent basis before he gets the nod. Bruce, McLean, Jones, even Rivers, all have the chance now to put their names forward over the next 6-8 weeks. The captaincy will no doubt be rotated IMO.

The second is for someone, ANYONE, to stand up in the goalsquare for the club. Not a F*CKING resting ruckman, but one of the young kids. Maybe Garland can step up? What about Dunn? Maybe Juice can step up, show some spirit and kick a few bags?

While it's easy to be negative in this situation we need to accept the fact that this will be a long season, yet there are still positives and chances for the younger brigade to step up and show something.

I'd rotate it around on a caretaker basis, and re-assess at seasons end.

On this season so far, Brad Green would be the front-runner.

Didnt we draft garland as a forward hes just bit taller then neitz at 193 cm think i read he kicked ten goals in one game just before draft. Think had to play in the backline at sandy because no room in forward also played for the allies at CHF.

"Colin Garland is a fast rising youngster from Tasmania which has been a great recruiting ground for the club in the past. He played two games with the Tassie Devils VFL side late in the season and was among the best players in his team's demolition of Box Hill Hawks in the final round. Earlier in the year he booted ten goals at full forward in a club game. "
I would like to see either he or even Frawley

Hopefully big Neitz can return by seasons end and the team and he can give him a fitting sendoff. Green should be interim captain for mine. He's been solid this year and I think the acid is then on him to perform consistenly. I'm pretty sure he's had it before and risen to the occasion too.

Give the captaincy to Mclean. He is standing up in trying times. Says alot.

I've been wanting that move for years, Green was always a better forward than midfielder.

I've been a supporter of Green on the wing for a few years but after seeing that video of him in the 98 Qualifying Final again and seeing him play more forward this year, I'm definately now of the opinion he should mainly play forward. If he's having a dirty day then he at least now has other options to his game but forward is where he looks most comfortable and dangerous.

I hope he can play a similar role to Corey Jones. Dangerous mid-sized forward that is capable of kicking a bag.

Neitz has not retired as of yet, unless he held a press conference at quarter past 11 tonight after F/C. He will retire at years end which comes as no surprise but he wants to make a playing return...JUST CLARIFYING!

As mentioned earlier, McDonald easily is the most obvious candidate, but the responsibility of revving up the boys should be shared amongst the likes of Robbo and Green and whatnot

I hav never been a fan of having a rotation captain, but in this situation it mite be best to give Bruce, macca, Maclean and green all two weeks as captain and see who gets the best out of the team.

Unfortunate news about Nieta, hope he gets back and it able to finish off the season. It was never a secret that he was goin to retire at seasons end, it was good to announce it now and get it out of the way and stop all the speculative talk and rumours.

I'm not sure about co-captains or rotations but the three names tossed up here I agree with as a shortlist. White cops a bit but he was the only player who played 22 games last year and he is predominantly in the middle most of the time. Has a good head. Bruce or Green I wouldn't mind either. If Green did get the green light for captaincy after 5 rounds it pretty much shows what a load of crap our leadership group was having dropped him and all.

Who would like to see co-captains in 2009?

I have never been a fan, but given our current leadership vaccuum, I think sharing the workload is sensible, as you don't want one player burdened with the responsbility of captaining a (poor) side.

I reckon it wouldn't be a bad thing if we announced Jared Rivers and Brock McLean as co-captains for 2009. Still a long way to go and things can change, but we should probably appoint a younger captain to take us into a new era. Rivers will be about 24 years old with about 80 odd games under his belt, and McLean will be 23 years with about 80 games too. Both have been around in good teams (2004-2006) and shit teams (2007-2008), so they have experienced both sides of the coin.

It's an interesting one. Will they give it to an older fella in a sort of short-term caretaker role (Bruce/Green/Junior - who would be my choice if they go down that path btw) or a youngster who may be our leader for the best part of a decade (Mclean the obvious stand-out/Jones/maybe Rivers?)

I would only be happy with Junior or Mclean, they are the type of players that can inspire confidence from their peers, not fairweather players who drift in and out of games and appear to not give 100%

On a slightly different note, is Rivers captaincy material? I really love the bloke but is he talkative in the group, gives the boys a rev-up etc etc?
