Hey is it right that big Fraser will be down here over the weekend playing v Tassie Devils @ Bellerive?

It's only Monday night. Way to early to know selections. However, If the G-train does not make the senior St.kilda squad, i would hope he has a hit out with Casey.

Might be a chance to return. With King injured, Kosi might need to spend more time in the ruck.

Gehrig did play for Casey and had a shocker dragged twice, no impacted Tassie won by 19 points.

Did Jaryd Allen play for Casey? Wasn't in the goals or the best in the Age this morning. Seeing as Roo is doubtful, I thought that maybe they're keeping him up their sleeve just in case.

Apparently Allen and Geary didn't play and have both flown over to Adelaide.

I was down there for the weekend and went down to watch, was behind the goals at one end and Faser was terrible!
Iv backed him up for a long time but the big fella couldn't have looked less interested.
He try to out wrestle and muscle his quicker and more agile opponents all day, i dont think he gave a meaningful lead for the hole match, was very disapointed.
Clinton jones cant kick! the kid can find the ball and move a run with it just dont ask him to kick it!

Furgeson was great at full back and went forward in the last quarter and was just as good up forward!

Arthritis may derail Fraser Gehrig stuttering comeback

EMBATTLED St Kilda forward Fraser Gehrig has to overcome another major hurdle to resurrect his flagging AFL career - arthritis in his hands.

Saints coach Ross Lyon said the 32-year-old had a role to play, but revealed yesterday that arthritis was making Gehrig's stop-start comeback even more painful.

"His hands are an issue. His hands are very arthritic and sore and affecting his ball handling," Lyon said.

"His fingers are all gnarled and been dislocated.

"As we all know, AFL footy is brutal and physically demanding and once you start playing footy again, they become more acute, those issues.

"Fraser is very stoic and he wouldn't like me mentioning it. Maybe I'm out of line a bit, but he never makes excuses.

"At ground level it is harder for him. He can still clunk them. It's the ball handling."

Lyon didn't baulk at Gehrig retirement talks, but said the decision was Gehrig's and that an extended period playing in the VFL could force the issue.

Debate has raged whether St Kilda and Gehrig got it right by reversing the retirement decision he made last year.

"Retirement will be up to Fraser. Fraser's career is self-determining," Lyon said.

"He's in my plans, there's no doubt about that, but it has got more difficult because of where the game has gone; it's quicker, at ball-ups, throw-ins.

"Backs run so hard and forward pressure is such a key element of success."

The query remains: Can Lyon fit Nick Riewoldt, Justin Koschitzke and Gehrig in the same forward line?

"It's a difficult question and depends which week," Lyon said.

"Riewoldt and Koschitzke are really tall men and it's getting harder to play three."

Gehrig could play against Richmond on Saturday night, although Lyon said he wasn't yet in the team.

Gehrig has kicked 34 goals in seven games against the Tigers in four seasons, including two bags of five last year.

"He's under strong consideration," Lyon said.

"I haven't been able to go through footage (of the VFL), but I think they (the opposition) got back on him a bit.

"He's got a very good record against Richmond. He'll come under strong consideration."

Playing for Casey Scorpions in Tasmania last weekend, Gehrig kicked a point in a 12-possession game, which included four goal assists.

"Fraser's never played at that level and it's not as systematic," Lyon said.

"It's probably a shock to the system, so sometimes it's about running around getting game minutes under your belt.

"He's not in the side at the minute. We have match committee (today). I would tell you if he was in.

"It all depends on how the ruck pans out as well with Michael Gardiner, who will fully train today and Thursday and might be available."

As revealed in the Herald Sun on Tuesday, Lyon denied claims his team carried a "lock-down attitude", and ignored comments by former Saints coach Grant Thomas that his team is too defensive.

Lyon said while Thomas had a right to comment, he was the coach.

If Fraser has arthritis, why could you send him down there to freeze his tits off?

Sounds like his wrestling is to get a few chest marks, as leading up does put more pressure on your hands.

I was hoping they could make a footballer out of Sweeney, and then thought that Watts was looking like he could replace Gehrig. With both of these guys not working out along with Brooks, it has left us thin to cover injured players or those out of form.

If the club is not going to try Goose or Sam F forward, I think we need to look at Fergie (even though he's not in our best 22). Of course, if King and Gardiner play it changes everything, but we can't rely on this given their histories.

Still would not surprise for gehrig to play against the Tigers, but obviously he is not going to be a key part of our 2008 plans and beyond.
