View Full Version : Round 17 Hypothetical

Lets just assume that both Geelong and Hawthorn have maintained form and have all but guaranteed top 2 finishes before the round 17 clash.
Al Clarkson has proven himself to be an excellent tactical coach. Now just as a pure hypothetical if he believes that he has developed a plan to best beat Geelong would he implement the plan in the round 17 game that potentially means nothing or does he hold it back to unleash when Geelong are unsuspecting and the stakes are much higher, possibly a premiership?
Both have pros and cons, discuss...

Nope, you give every game everything you have. Beat Geelong and you might just throw some doubt into a few of their players.

the only way he would know if it would work was to use it round 17..
and if it did work and both make it to the GF, then he would have to come up with another plan becuase geelong will come out determined to kick our ass.........

2/3rd's of your team were hacks about 18 months ago. Remember the 10 goal belting we gave you??

Can't show your hand early.
I think Port did this last year (Rd 21?) and the rest is history.
Would be great to get the win with an ace still up our sleeve :thumbsu:
Beat them in Round 17. We may not make the last 2, so better to have some bragging rights rather than losing and them winnin the cup again.

Beat them with Game Plan A in Round 17.
Then come Grand Final, unleash Game Plan B and inflict a bigger hiding. :):thumbsu:

How would you know the game plan would beat Geelong if not implemented? Coaches are never 100% on tactics working, thats why good coaches have multiple options. Everything will be thrown at Geelong in round 17, because then you can judge the performance whether it be win or loss and improve from that.

Good scenario - but if both coaches fox the result would be very similar yes?
The biggest thing that I have seen out of left field was Blight sitting Couch and Bairstow on the bench for the first quarter of a final to kill their tags.
There is that many rotations now it is more like a Abbott-Costello skit.
Surprises like Wallet running Richo on the wing are rarer than ever because it's not something you can hide that well in your training.

last year 2/3's of the team were nobodies but yet we still beat you guys ha ha ha as we will in rd 17:)
Easy.
We try our hardest to win, but if we lose we say we were saving our best for the finals:D
We need to win every game we can, unlike Geelong who are proven, we cant afford to take any games at all lightly

Winning form is good form.
A winning culture breeds success. You give it everything you've got and instill the confidence in your players that they can repeat it when they are asked. Play to win.

All they need is the knowledge that Geelong have not beaten Hawthorn at the MCG since the 1963 Grand Final

Are you serious I did not know that!!!!
I guess its an interesting question and thats why I asked it. Torn between seeing if the game plan does potentially work because often things in theory do not work in practise, or on the other hand showing Bomber the tactics that we are going to employ to beat them so that he has time to revise a good plan B himself.
Good point about Port, remembering they beat the Cats late in the season. However geelong were missing a few players such as Ling and Bartel. And they barely got away with the win

well we could be 5-11 at worst and unless thier is a procedure in the next few weeks that allows Richmond to play for Hawthorn that WL record isn't going to eventuate.

hello I smell a troll.
Richmond fans seem to be very good at this.
To think I was thinking some Hawks fans wer ebeing over the top, and in steps the realm of idiocy.
Hawthorn will lose by round 17 but they won't lose that many times.
