View Full Version : Pie greats say it's too soon to drop struggling forward

COLLINGWOOD forward consultant Brian Taylor says calls for Anthony Rocca to be dumped are premature, despite his recent poor form.

Rocca was yesterday selected at centre half-forward for the Anzac Day clash against Essendon, with captain Scott Burns again missing with a calf injury.
But Rocca's lacklustre past fortnight - just two goals from 10 kicks - and remarkable new statistics have again put the spotlight on his position.
Rocca has not gathered 10 or more possessions in 14 of his past 16 matches, but has the highest percentage of contested possession across the competition.

While only 47 of Jonathan Brown's 195 marks last year were contested, Rocca took 65 contested marks and 61 uncontested marks.
In an era of junk possessions and uncontested marking, an amazing 50 per cent of his touches were contested, 20 per cent up on the competition average.

While contested marks are critical in the forward arc, Rocca's lack of mobility means he is not getting the easy touches further afield to play himself into form.

But while Rocca's poor Anzac Day record has been highlighted this week, former Pies Coleman medallist Taylor said the 29-year-old was critically important.
"I am not privy to selection matters but from the outside as a commentator and part-time helper down there, I would have thought his position is reasonably safe," Taylor said.
"The simple fact of the matter is that Collingwood without Rocca aren't as good. If you take Rocca out of that team for Anzac Day, you would say it's a weakened side."
Collingwood premiership captain Tony Shaw said yesterday the Pies needed to free up Rocca when he failed to fire.
"He needs to be released quicker. When he isn't touching it for 15-20 minutes, throw him into the ruck, then put him on the bench, then bring him back again when you have released the pressure on him," he said.
Shaw said like his brother Saverio, Rocca had always struggled to bridge the gap between matchwinner and non-contributor.

"The thing about Anthony is that there is a big difference between his good and bad. He has to reduce that gap. I don't think they would drop him, but you have to keep performing," he said.

Collingwood last night welcomed Nick Maxwell back from suspension and brought in Ryan Cook for Ben Reid (quad) and Brodie Holland (ankle).

Way too early to talk about dropping him. Apart from anything else, Reid and Dawes are no way near ready to replace him. Plus if we dropped everyone who deserved to be dropped based on the last two weeks form we'd be lucky to have ten players left.

He's hardly the bloke to be passing comment on that issue.

Ruined Sav and Anthony's confidence by doing the exact same thing.

A lot should be dropped before Rocca. What is it with Rocca every time we have a slump they blame Rocca. BTW, see his contested stats, all over the other supposed hard men of footy.

roccas a scapegoat, which has been over done. im sick of the rocca bashing lol
theres other players in the team that need to lift, when they do rocca is going to be the one benefiting from it.

I'm sick of Rocca bashing as well. What's the point of dropping him, it's not going to help delivery or pressure from the midfield?

Pre-mature. Veeeeeeeeeeeeeerryyy pre-mature!
Dropping Rocca will not solve the problem. Its not like our midfielders are having blinders and Rocca is screwing things up.

Its the same as the last 5-10 years. We've got a s__t midfield, and when the midfield is down, Rocca will cop the brunt of it. I hope the midfielders realise that, and get off their arses!

Talks of dropping Rocca? For shame!

More contested then those other drop kicks that's for sure, just a little bit of better delivery and he'll be on it like hot food.

He will Rocca Essendon tomorrow with a big 5!

That rather feebly-worded article was the last resort of an unimaginative journalist desperate for a beat-up.:thumbsd: The writer would be better served participating in the the mass PVE currently underway in the ROCCAdemption thread on the buddy board.

It's hardly Rocca's fault that our midfield is shit and cannot kick.

I'd hate to be a forward in our team with that rubbish delivery coming forward.

i think rocca sux but its pretty clear our midfield sux more and reid sux even more than rocca therefore we sux with or without rocca

Who exactly is calling for Rocca to be dropped?

Yeah, umm, Rocca = needed.

It is especially nice when he kicks a bag though, if only that could happen more frequently.:D

Ummmmm, anyone else notice the positives about Pebbles in the article? Pointing out his number of contested possessions inside 50?

Or was that just me.

Rocca is the most valuable member of our forward line. It may not show up in goals scored but don't doubt it for a second.

I never thought of it that way, I have always thought he is a great forward because he gets more contested possesions than others. A stat he should be proud of as it is one of the hardest things to do in the game, but if players like Buddy and Brown carve it up by movement and avoiding the lower % contest then perhaps from a team/structure perspective it's not as valuable a stat as I thought. Crazy talk saying he be should be dropped but maybe the forward coaches could re-assess his role.
