I know I know, it is Round 5.
...but I'm a tad bored. I was thinking about possible players to poach at the end of 2008.
Some players I have come up with are... (I have no idea about contracts)
I think these players would all be valuable to our team.
- Jason Roe, Bisbane - Key defender we lack
- Brent Prismall, Geelong - Would be an A grader in any other team
- Daniel Wells, North Melbourne - Midfield pace we lack
- Jared Rivers, Melbourne - See Roe
- Sean Hampson, Carlton - Taylor and Robbie are good, but Hampson will likely be a better player in the future
EDITED:
Add...
- Daniel Pearce - See Wells

Danyle Pearce
I know he has been dropped from Port and is in some bad form, but we could pick him up for pretty much nothing and he is a very speedy mid which could help.

wouldnt trade tayles and robbie. they are one of the best ruck duo goin round..robbie can go foward or back, tayles has improved 100% from 2 years ago..
as for prismall, he is out of contract and maybe looking for a new home. geelong wont be able to fit him in their salary..but i wouldn trade any of our current best 22, maybe of load some of the boxhill who dont seem to get much game time..

Prismall I'm very much in favour of.
Wells - I'm not a fan of. We need someone to replace Crawf when he retires, but I'm not sure if Wells is our man. I'd be much happier with Pearce, but the rising star award may put I high price on his head.
I want someone big and angry for our defence. Not sure who would fit the bill? Who is this Roe? Can someone shed some light on this guy's attributes?
I'm in no rush to update the rucks. Especially with Bailey being groomed.

Promoted off the rookie list last season, he quickly found his niche in the backline. His agility and athleticism enabled him to tackle, and beat, some of the competition’s best forwards

Do clubs really decided on which current list player of their team wont be around in 2009, only 5 rounds into 2008. I seriously doubt it, they may have a wish list developing tho...

Lewis? That’s a joke, right? Jordan is our Hodge junior. Once he learns to control his aggression, like Brownie has, he will become one of the elite mids of the comp, and can play forward with success. He’s one of the toughest on our list and knows how to get the ball. I would be pissed if we traded Lewis:thumbsd:

Do we need more running players? We've leapfrogged a lot of the competition by getting the best talls we can in the most recent drafts, but does our midfeild/running contingent need any additions?
Our young midfielders are:
Lewis
Ellis
Tuck
Kennedy
Young
Birchall
Rioli
Stokes.
Kennedy, Tuck and Stokes are the only ones that haven't cemented their spot in the 22 yet. For the effort it would take to court and land a bazooka young midfield to replace one or more of our young machine guns I'm starting to think it's not worth it.

Maybe you missed Bradshaw's demolition of our backline last week.
Any team with two big forwards is going to cause us problems and the Cats have three. We're not battling to make the finals anymore, we're battling to win a flag. The competition steps up when you do that and additional tall forwards, multiple key defenders and rotation mifielders that would start on the ball for most other clubs become part of the norm.
We need another big defender and if it doesn't come from Dawson, Thorpe, Dowler, McEntee, Sandilands or Renouf, it needs to be procured elsewhere.

Getting Kerr would add another dimension to our midfield which is currently fairly one-paced. He is an absolute gem Kerr.
Out of our one-paced mids, Lewis is highly rated and therefore has trade currency. He is the most easily replaced compared to Mitchell, Hodge and Sewell. If the belief is that Kennedy can step in and replace Lewis - which does not look out of the question - then it is a very smart deal to do. Moss is the sweetener as a WA boy. He goes ok Moss but reality is that he wont break into our side with our depth of mids. Rioli and Stokes hitting the ground running this year has hurt his chances massively.

- Daniel Wells, North Melbourne - Midfield pace we lack
What do you think Hawthorn would part with?

I am reasonably confident the Tim Walsh for Cox trade wont fly. If we choose to trade we wont be swapping for rookies. It would be pointless going for players like Welsh, McMahon who may be solid AFL players but they dont add to our list. If If iF we trade it will be at the high end of the market.
We have an oversupply of mids - Mitch, Sewell, Hodge, Lewis are supported by BMac, K3, Tucky, Cyril and Stokesy. Sewell is a B&F. Sammy and Hodgey are untouchable. Lewis has serious currency because he is a good footballer. If I thought Lewis was a spud, I would not be interested in a trade.
We dont have an oversupply of tall forwards with currency. We have Buddy and Roughie. Boiler, Dowler and Thorp would attract interest but not big names.
If you think Pelchin is not actively looking at improving our list by trading then how does he fill in his day? I love all the players and want world peace.
If Hawthorn are happy to swap Roughead and our first round pick for Kerr then we might just be a chance to get him. Might have to throw in a 2nd round pick, or upgrade our first rounder though.
I'm sure we'd all be very happy with that deal :(

Taking in to account that Kerr wants to move, of course.

I don't see the value in that for us or them. Thorp holds no value other than he was drafted high and is a good prospect and Lewis is a very solid midfielder who is still getting better. I'd rather see them playing for the Hawks than Kerr, who though exciting on the field could possibly tear our team apart.

Re- Wells?
I don't think we would trade him for anything, not because I think he is the best player in the competition, but because he covers an area we are severely lacking in and he is the leader amongst our aboriginal boys.
Losing one player could theoretically lose us three or four.
Pick 12-16 and Mitch Thorp is under way under the odds anyway.
Wells is a top 5 player at North, you would have to make a deal for a player or combination of players better than that.
I can't see Pelchen catching us out again.;)

Daniel Merrett from Brissie?? Other teams would be frightened seeing his and Roughie's faces in the same side.
Maybe we only have to look into our backyard for the answer to a key defender.
If Dowler or Thorp come into the side this year or next year and start kicking goals, no-one will complain if Roughead is played up back. Really, Roughie is the one with the most upside as a key defender due to his size. There is some query on his pace as a defender but it seems sound enough. His form up back early in his career for a period of time was very good (he did struggle at one stage). As a forward his hands are good without being great - he does drop his fair share of marks.
I agree with Collins-Langford-Ayres that we are genuinely short of a key defender and need to address this thru a trade or otherwise.

Fair enough, that would cost you another top player.
Trading for top shelf players rarely happens unless the player wants to move on. You are much better off identifying good second tier talent at a club looking to rebuild, and paying a little over the odds.
Let me give you an idea:
There is no way Roughead, Franklin, Williams, Dowler and Thorp are ever going to play in the same team.
I would look to making some kind of trade involving Dowler or Thorp for someone like David Mundy (22, 192 cm, 91 kg) from Fremantle.

Matthew Spangher from West Coast played his first 2 games the last 2 weeks (dropped for this week). Looked a good size and moved ok. Didn't really see him with the ball a great deal so not sure what his ball skills and decision making is like but looked ok phyiscally. He may struggle to get a game at the weagles with Glass, Staker, Hunter, etc and is a Melb boy. Does anyone know if he is worth a look?
If we can get a young developing CHB/FB to grow with our side would be ideal.
Who was the west coast tall who played CHB most of their premiership year but didn't make the GF side? He was ok from memory without being super but is young? Cant remember his name.

I think we should have a crack at Eric MacKenzie from the Eagles. He is 196cm and 94kgs. Turning 20 next month. Shouldn't cost us too much. He has only played 1 game last year and will struggle to get games behind Glass, Hunter and now Spanger. Any thoughts?

Yeah that was him. Thanks. He was playing in a good team at the time so prob looked a bit better than he was (not that he ever looked like being a star). Dont think he was great one on one but looked quick enough and was pretty tall.
You get the feeling that even if we can get a key defender that is servicable rather than top shelf it will make a big diff to our structure up back and overall strength of the back 6. No more pinch hitting.
No doubt we have our eye on 2 or 3 at other clubs to make a play for over the off season.

Big Defender Please.
Gone are the days of having a lightpost play at full back like Presti.
The modern day key back must be mobile like Bock form the Crows.
Adam Hunter is one i would consider for sure. In a good side Hunter is a very handy player that can play both ends and would form a good solid partnership with Croad.
Seems like now is the time to try and temopt Eagle players away.
