View Full Version : Cook and Wello!
Have been absolutely great and just what we need, young quick and skilled.
Pendles is on track for ANZAC day medal, lifting for the big games and more importantly putting his body on the line .
keep it up guys! Go pies, it begins here Collingw08d.:thumbsu:

I was absolutely gobsmacked by Cookie. He was so good! Just what we need in this team. He has a new follower in myself! :D
Wellingham "Boots" as we were calling him today...... what an excelent debut! I think he has found a few new followers in my family, what a star for the future. :thumbsu:
Great game Cookie & Boots. Loved ya work! :thumbsu::)
GO PIES!!! :D

They played well. I'm happy that they were able to withstand the pressure put on them in the first quarter. Hopefully they maintain their positions in the side.:thumbsu:
My thoughts:
Cook - he was ok today, but I question his speed a bit. At one point he was chasing Hille, and didn't really close the gap at all. Disposal also iffy.
Wellingham - Incredibly excited about him. Good (but not great) speed, and showed clean hands and feet, which was great to see.
They both should get another crack next week

i was very impressed with cooks game, wellingham was very pleasing indeed especially with the way he kept his feet in the hard situations, it was great.... seems to be very unselfish aswell i.e when he was running inside 50 from the centre of the ground and then handballed it to lockyer i think??? but doesnt matter who it was he could have tried to go for goal and what not but he kept his eyes peeled and it led to a goal....
WELL DONE SHARROD!!

On Cook's speed as mentioned a couple posts up...
I am 90% certain that Cook is the fastest player at Collingwood, and chasing Hille, despite a ruckman isn't an easy task, considering the facts shown by channel 10 had him sprinting more than Lovett, as well as being almost as quick as Lovett, which is quite interesting.
Cook adds running capacity, but considering he was successful enough as a tagger, but more so, as a half-forward, he showed poise when made to play defence, which is very encouraging.
Wellingham has enough pace, but what I saw from Wellingham was a football brain, which great footballers have. His natural ability may be there, but when you have natural ability and a football brain, you will be a very good player. I did make a note that on a couple occassions he didn't shepherd, but that is expected of a young player, just like a learner driver, simple things will be forgotten, but become norm with experience. He did shepherd after half time which makes it invalid anyway.
Great signs from both, and probably likely for one to miss out, like Jack Anthony had to, with Burns, and most likely Rocca to come back into the side.

Both played very solid games.
Cook, who I have never seen play before was hard at it and despite giving away a very "suspect" free did not lose concentration on the game and went on with it without letting it distract him.
Wellingham was good without being outstanding and fitted in well.
His link work was particularly good.
I think he also spoke well after the game.

How can you be 90% sure? How exactly did you come to that number? And fastest over what distance?
In all seriousness though, I think you misinterpreted channel 10's graphic. Hille, whilst sprinting more often, was a good 10%+ slower than Lovett (33+ vs. 29.8 iirc), which is significant.
Cook's ability to run out the game looked good, I just saw nothing of this blazing speed that you're talking about. Wellingham certainly looked quicker, for one.

Far more impressed with Wellingham's debut than with Cook. Wellingham has all the ingredients to become a gun midfielder, one that we have been missing. I really think he could really elevate his game at AFL level despite not necessarily starring like he should at VFL level. He is quick, perhaps not Lovett quick, but Daniel Kerr quick, and you can tell he has very good skills an is an intelligent player. Extremely clean, ala Pendles and Thomas, and that is a very good indicator of whether someone has the ability to really be a good AFL player. Solid game, but it's his potential that excites, he has massive room for improvement given his skill set and athleticism.
Cook has more experience than Wellingham, and was solid. I still query whether he has the tools to really cement his place and be a long term AFL player, but the signs after that game are promising. I question his best position, I'm not sure he is good enough defensively to be a small defender (I could be wrong), because I don't think he has the skillset to be a full time midfielder.

Cook is nowhere near the fastest player at the club. I don't even think he would be in the top 15. Speed is not an area Cook excels at. I don't care what stats Channel 10 came up with, Lovett would leave Cook in the dust in any kind of sprint.

Just with Cook, it's often forgotten that he was a bottom-age draftee. he's ticking over nicely. He has time on his side. I think the poster who said he was the quickest at Collingwood had it wrong .. i think he's rated the best endurance runner at the club.

Speed is nowhere near as important as acceleration.

Thought both were excellent today. Really liked Cook's game, turned it over a couple of times, but that was pressure of the game at that time. He gave us good run throught he middle / half back, and showed he can play at this level. Wellingham was very pleasing, for a guy to come in as a late change and play in the biggest H & W game of the year and collect 17 possesions. I am excited by this guy, he looks to have the balance and poise to really go on with it at AFL level. He impressed us at VFL level, looks like he'll do the same in the big league.
I thought Cook was good, not great but handy.
I was more impressed with Wellingham though, hopefully he can have an extended run in the seniors.
Just a shame with Rocca and Burns probably coming back next week, these two will be the ones out.

Cook hadn't shown much before today but he may be quite handy! Wellingham looked comfortable at this level.

I think it's often forgotten, because IMO it's irrelevant. Either a player is good enough or he isn't. The fact that a player is 6 to 8 months younger than a lot of others in his draft class has no bearing, particularly now that it's been a couple years since Cook's draft year.
i thought cook looked pretty quick , as someone pointed out in this thread , acceleration is as or more important than speed. i think cook showed great acceleration from what i saw on several occasions and he hardly looks like a plodder.
i was impressed with him and wellingham also.

How old is Cook? He looked solid and Sharrod looked positively creative. I was very impressed at the way they handled such a big event. Hopefully they'll both play again soon.
What about some credit for Tarks? He was a star, and Johnston has improved a lot. Rhyce and Josh showed some real digger spirit, and Tyson was brilliant. A game to just celebrate for a change.:thumbsu:
to above post
i was really impressed with johnson also, maybe it would always take him a while to get back to his best. he looked great today, also pendles and even clarke seemed to get some touch back. some very promising signs.
when our midfield works like it did today we look great, lets hope its the start of some consistent good form for the pies

I think Cooks got a bit to offer if we could only see him more. He was "willing" his kicks to his team mates today but that's just confidence. (they got there but a little too much 'hang time").
He played in only his 4th game today and can easily be excused for not playing more games since drafted as the likes of Buckley, Burns, O'Bree, Holland, Licuria etc have made the midfield their own in recent times.
I'll stick by him for now it's too early to write him off.
Snag Cook has just turned 20

Thought Cook was quite cool under pressure when he got the footy in a conjested situation. That is a very good sign. I can see a spot for him in our 22 in the next year.
Boot did Ok for his 1st game. I was expecting him to have a shoot fot goal from 50 out but steadied and hand balled over to tarks for an easy goal. Team player.

Malthouse - always had faith in this kid - Ryan Cook - gave hime time to mature & I reckon he played a super game today. Coming into the side on such a pumpt up game for his first game this year. He wasn't disgraced at all.

Solid debut from Sharrod.
I had a feeling Cookie would be a lot better when he got his 'second chance'.
Big difference today when your bottom few players in the team get close to 20 touches, as opposed to the spuds in recent weeks who have been liabilities.

They were both pretty good. I was stoked to see Sharrod get his chance -- he's had to wait a while to get his shot. Apart from one hospital handball to Marty he was clean with the ball and not at all flustered in the heavy traffic in the centre square.
Cook muffed his first couple of kicks and lost a little confidence IMO. He's normally a solid kick. His strength is his running capacity. Just perpetual motion. Liked the amount of ground he covered, and I think with a little more confidence and composure his disposal will improve.
Both should play next week.

Yesterday was definitely Cook's best game to date. He'll probably get dropped if Burns & Rocca come back next week, but on the strength of yesterday he deserves another go.
