Well done to Medhurst, but was I the only who thought Pendles was clearly BOG (in the time that mattered)? Or am I just being a homer?

I would have been happy had either of them got it, but I think Medhurst probably deserved it that little bit more. If Pendles had have been played for most of the last quarter (he was on the bench for a large amount of time) he would have won it IMO....

Great game played by both of them and the team. :thumbsu:

Medhurst was terrific all day. Pendlebury had a terrific middle part of the game, including a dominate third term, but failed to do anything in the last quarter.

Travis Cloke was my man of the match. Started at similar levels to the opening five games, but as a relied on, only key-forward, in such a defining game, he stepped up. 15 marks and 5 goals, in a career-best game.

Pendles was stiff to miss out but Medhurst played awesome. Could've gone either way really. You would think Meddy is the best small forward in the comp atm the way he's going. Trav played very well but he kicked 3 of his 5 goals in junktime whereas Meddy played a solid 4 quarters and should've kicked a few more if he hadn't dropped two easy marks.

Deserved winner... and if Clokie had just got the hell out of his way in the last quarter he would have kicked 10!:D

Well yeah, he spent it on the bench.

My point is why is the last quarter being taken into account? It was a low-intensity walkthrough.

Pendlebury was the best player at the half and added 16 possessions in the 3rd quarter...I don't know, thought he was very unlucky. His tackling particularly was an outstanding trait.

Only downside to medhursts game was the three mistakes he made (dropped easy marks) thats the only reason I would have given it to pendles

Amazing the way he has changed his style and developed consistency into his game. Defs one of the most improved players in the comp.

Thoroughly deserving of the medal today. Could've been even more destructive if he hadn't dropped those sitters, but they came at a time when the result was beyond doubt anyway.

i love this man, he can do anything but him(medhurst)/pendles/cloke couldve got the medal, but i think mehurst was a very deserved winner, he was sensational.

It's so contradictive though. A game should be based on four-quarters, not two-three.

If a game was tight for 95% of the game, and then Sharrod Wellingham, for example, kicked two goals with his only two kicks in the match, in the final 5 minutes, does he get the Norm Smith Medal in the Grand Final?

Paul Medhurst was more constructive when the game needed to be won. He was one of few forward targets for the match without Anthony. He supplied brilliant second-third efforts. He made several chases. He made several brilliant tackles, in the forward line. I love nothing more than forward pressure.

As for mistakes made. Medhurst dropped some marks, but followed up a couple times. Mistakes. Pendlebury did miss two shots he would usually nail, probably more of an error on a match outcome than dropping a mark. So that cancels out.

Saying that, I still think Cloke was best on ground.

Not at all - what I'm saying is that you should take into account how a player performs at all times when a game is still contested. It's only when a game is clearly beyond doubt and the opposition have stopped applying pressure that I would discount the 4th quarter.

Disagree. Pendlebury had 13 possession and 5 tackles at have time, and was yet again our best user of the ball alongside Davis and Didak. Then put the game beyond doubt in the third. He also had 7 tackles to Med's 4 on the game.

Like I said, I thought Medhurst was very good, so I'm not dogging him, but just thought he was 2nd best on the day.

It would, except Medhurst also missed two shots ;)

Saying that, I still think Cloke was best on ground.

He was very good, but only exploded in a meaningless 4th quarter. If I took the 4th quarter into consideration, I'd probably have him ahead of Meds as well.

Good follow up MDC, not going to go any further with a debate because it will go for some time, haha.

Medhurst, Pendlebury, Cloke, couldn't care less who won. Be happy if Rhyce won it, thought he was brilliant as well.

Medhurst really deserved his Medal today.
A great honor for any player.

I was very impressed with two incidents later in the game.

One where all our forwards looked to get the ball to Medhurst in what was obviously a compliment to him from them on his ability.

And the other when Medhurst, who should have had a shot himself, looked to pass to another player....

Both resulted in botched attempts but the thought and effort were there.

At the moment he is displaying the correct balance of confidence, arrogance and selflessness to become a truly great player.

He is certainly one of our own now and I hope he gets to write himself in to the great history of Collingwood Football Club.

how can you EXPECT medhurst to lay as many tackles as a midfielder he played as a permanent forward today and to lay 4 tackles as a forward is absolutely outstanding!!

Medhurst absolutely desrved the ANZAC medal, was brilliant all day and not only kicked a lazy 6, but created play and his pressure in the F50 was sensational. This guy has turned his career 360 degrees, and you wonder what those at Freo must be thinking now. Well done to MM and the coaching staff for turning this guy into the best small forward in the competition right now.

Pendlebury would have been a worthy winner as well, but i think Medders just shaded him today.

firstly well done to you boys, all over us today and im just shattered we couldnt put in a better perfomance to make it a better game.

IMO i think in pendelbury had nailed a few of the goals he missed that would have won him the medal.

Well deserved by medhurst however. I had my doubts about him as a player, as a few of you pies supporters would have too. Clearly has a great minset now though and doing everything right

You're joking, right?

I thought the last bit of his speech where he compared today's game to the soldiers was somewhere between moronic/disrespectful.

I still love him though.

remind me clown who was he playing for around this time last year....WILLY
Actually mate, he was injured this time last year. He kicked 4 goals in Round 3 and got injured and wasn't available until Round 7. 2 games at Willy and then back into the side.

Played 17 games and kicked 24 goals, played the last 8 games including finals and was excellent.

Big occasion for the teams and especially the Medal winner.
I thought he spoke from his heart and what he said was befitting the occasion. I think he said if it were not for the soldiers there would be no football..He is after all a footballer not a politician.

If you thought his speech was disrespectful then you must also think the game is disrespectful because at no point did he make the comparison. He said he was privileged to pay tribute to their contribution and hope that they showed some of their spirit in their performance.

Meh, I just thought that it was a strange thing to say given the standard/intensity(or lack thereof) of most of the game.

The concept of an ANZAC day game in itself isn't disrespectful, it isn't anything. It's just a way to get people through the gates.

Firstly the Anzac medal is awarded to the player whos conduct and play during this game, best typifies the Anzac spirit, that of skill, courage and adversity. Self-sacrifice, teamwork and fair play.

I quote Pauls speech from the game so none viewers do not get a distorted view of what was said.

"Thanks a lot"

Hmm.. I'd just like to say what a special priveledge it is to, to play in this game for one and to win this medal is something I am going
to treasure for the rest of my life, so thanks a lot.

I'd also like to say on behalf of everyone who played today how priveledged we are to be able to come out and demonstrate the values
that the Anzacs hold so dear to them, so, teamwork and, and honesty and sacrifice so I hope that that shone through today."

(Craig Willis - Announcer) "Well done Paul, lovely speech"

so.... what part of his speech is a problem for you?
Not too shabby for an off the cuff speech.... unless you think he's so cocky that he thought he'd win the medal and have his speech rehearsed.

I thought that Pendlebury and Cloke, followed closely by Fraser and Rhyce played very well but Medhurst was the deserved winner yesterday.

At the start of the game without Rocca the forward line had no real structure. It was Medhurst that provided the option and did it very well. Cloke came good (and very good mind you) after the game was won IMO. Medhurst and Pendlebury won the game for us. Marty also played his best game for 2008.

Just on a side thought. If the All Australian team was named today, would Medhurst be picked at a Forward Pocket. Is there a more in form small forward in the competition??? Keep up the good work Paul.

It's a close one but i think they got it right. If Lloyd had of kicked 6, Jobe Watsons 30 touches would have meant nothing, and he (Lloyd) would have been given the medal.
Good to see Pendles back in super form.(and O'Bree not far behind). Bring on the Hawks.

Watching the replay this morning, Cloke could easily have kicked 8 or 9. Missed a few sitters (set shot 15m out and soccer off the ground from in the goal square) hopefully he starts kicking more bags.

As good as he is, thats the first time he's kicked 5 I think.

Terrible, just terrible decision to give it to Medhurst!

Now before you whack me.......

I backed Didak into a Collingwood win!At $14's

As A bluebagger, I rate Dids and love watching him play.

But Medhurst was sensational yesterday. Best game for the club.
