About 12 months ago, I heard a whisper that Chris Cornell was supposed to be the new frontman of Rage Against The Machine. Since then, I've heard bugger all about it.
Does anyone know what transpired there ? If so, any reports of releases etc...

I'm pretty sure he did join, and they split up not long after.
Correct to an extent. Last i heard, Cornell has teamed with the 3 remaining member of the group and they have apparently recorded an album which i believe is set for release next month or so. I dont believe it is going to be a RATM album though, although could be wrong on that.
Should be very interesting. I'm a massive fan of Chris Cornell's voice and dont mind what RATM did while they were together but just cant picture what the two togehter would sound like. Am fascinated to hear what the final product comes up with.

They recorded, and then the split again due to creative differences. I'd imagine that's the last out of th outfit. I wish Zac would go back. :(

As I have said in previous threads on this subject, Chris Cornell could never sing RATM songs. This new band, I feel, would have had to take on a new moniker and probably style. My opinion is the opposite to Carlos in that I was a huge RATM fan, and didn't mind Cornell's voice....especially early in Soundgarden's career.
It would have been an interesting mix though.
Ill just note that they never recorded under the name Rage Against The Machine without Zach. When Chris joined they changed their name to something else...but for the life of me i cant remember what it was.
I for one could never hear Chris Cornell singing Killing In The Name or People of the Sun. Just wouldnt be right.
just found it. They were to be called 'Civilian', but they couldnt secure the rights to the name for some reason.
If you wanna hear what the collaboration sounded like then go here:
RATM/Cornell Songs (http://www.ratm.net/media.html)
They got 6 of the 13 songs they recorded together there.
