I don't mind people critisizing certain things about players eg Pendleberry's kicking for goal, O'Bree's dispoasal...but to question any AFL player's courage is ludicrous, particularly when it comes from anonymous posters like in this forum.
If a player does lack courage, they will not ever make AFL. There also two aspects to courage in the modern game. The backing back into packs, burrrowing into packs etc and the gut busting running players are required to do today. On both counts, you cannot question Pendleberry.
Maybe his cleverness in weaving his way out of packs has confused some of the poorer observers.

correct, when hes on no one can put a hand on him hardly , even when he does collect the ball where youd think he would cop a tackle or some contact, he somehow gets through traffic and delivers.
people label him as an outside receiver, hes far from that

Did you read the post your question is in relation to?
Did Lonie play AFL?
What about Ryan Lonie mate?
Lonie is certainly not a physical player and an outside receiver but to say he lacks courage is a bit unfair in my book. He certainly has the gut busting running courage that you need to play AFL.
Anyway, how's your courage my friend ?

Couldn't agree more he is at his best running and using his foot skills not diving into packs. Work to your strengths and Lonie's isn't getting the contested ball. Dont think he will play in the B&W again.

About time someone stood up for our future Captain, dont worry about that, in 09 Pendles will be Captain.
Why?, because for the next decade of Black and White footy, he will be the Midfielder that all out midfield is based around, he is and will be for a long time, one of the top 10 midfielders in the league.
As for Ryan Lonie, he's gone, players like Goldsack, Cook, Wellingham, Didak (moved up field), and the likes have ended his career (finally).

Great game - BOG up until three-quarter time. Medhurst pipped him with a last quarter goal from the boundary line, but apart from that there wasn't much between them.

The big thing for Pendles is to play like this EVERY week. I expected him to really step up this season and dominate but he hasn't done that yet. This is the first game where I've seen him play to the level where I expect him to play consistantly for his career, in order to be the star of the comp that he should be. He needs to keep up the same level of play week in week out even against the stronger teams, and not drop off.

well yeh from the people that voted for the ANZAC Medalhurst medders only won by one vote, he got 8 votes out of a possible 9 pendlebury was next with 7 votes...nathan brown was 4th inline with 1 vote lol!! so low scoring votes...
I am NO Pendlebury fan AT ALL and i was glad he didnt get it
But he was best on ground by a country mile
If Gary Ablett j had his stats the media would have given him the Brownlow FFS
Well done to Scott but when under pressure he fails badly....I have seen it last year in finals and at basketball as a kid
But nothing can take away the fact that you were the best on ground by a mile on Friday

did u watch the eagles game in the finals last year at all ? did you notice the fact he finished second in club best and fairest. you dont get second in a best and fairest by being a pretender or crumbling under pressure. this aint no basketball court eitheir.

there was a definete lack of intent (whether some decide to call that lack of courage or not) in the way he went about his first 4 games! there were two instances where he could have effected a smother and back into a pack to either spoil or mark he opted not to. He has definetly improved his effort and yeah almost back to 07 form (minus the goal kicking). He will never be a heater but he is not a lonie either...

What I meant is this shouldn't be his one dominant game for the year. He needs to consistently put in these performances. He is obviously going to drop off every odd week, but this is possibly the first time I've really seen Pendlebury dominate a game for 4 quarters (well for the time he's on the ground anyway). He needs to do it more often if we are going to have a chance come September.

I agree, needs to do it more often. The north game was a good effort also, but only got around 2 disposals in the final quarter. Needs to keep it up for all 4 quarters.

I see what you mean but what I meant was this was an unbelievable game of footy from him and it's hard to expect that out of him every match. However I agree, he has the capacity to run our midfield like he did on ANZAC day every week, maybe not with the same fantastic results however.

I watch every game. Sometimes 3 times if it is warranted.
I saw Davis pull his head in waiting for a hit from behind that did not come, which is understandable, yet he controlled the ball and pumped it forward. Other than that there was no "squibbing" to be seen from the Pies least of all Pendles.
Pendles does not fly into packs full tilt and emerge leaving numerous bodies in his wake true.
He does however pick the ball up very cleanly, under pressure and cruise effortlessly away to dispose of it.
I played for 25 years and know which player I would rather be. I spent a lot of time in packs because I was not one of the Pendles type players.
There is no cowardice in having "Silken Skills".
When he has to he goes...that is all you can ask.

had a quiet one in the prelim, its hardly a crime for a second year player.
13 possies is below his best
i think youll note though he had a massive game in the finals agaisnt the eagles
24 possies against swans and 26 possies against the eagles
he must have choked pretty hard in those do or die finals to get those possies.
was a key in our win against the eagles aswell from memory.
so ur theory is he cant handle the pressure is pretty much shot to pieces. sure he may have a quiet game, hardly means he cant handle it.

exactly the reason why dal is softer than pendles when pendles gets tagged he gets his own ball, dal seems to think that the ball is just going to come to him, he waits for the ball on the outside, and i am a dal fan so i know that when he does get the ball he generally uses it very well but that still doesnt change the fact that he doesnt go in and get his own ball.. its not sayin hes not a good player i just think he generally RECIEVES the ball rather than trying to get it himself..... same with pendles at times but no where near as much as dal...

I think what he means is that he doesnt get tagged by the oppositions number one tagger each week. I read every thread with interest and feel that some of you are right and some wrong each of you makes some good points - but one thread did make a good point in that he got most of his possessions late in the game with no pressure on him when game was done and dusted and so was essendon - let's see how he goes against a good team this week - i bet swan takes the tag like he does each week - efficiency high for pendles due to where he got the ball this time and lack of pressure from opposition. And about dal santo, well known that he struggles with a tag never been able to cope but i think he had pendles play the game very similar love to see how pendles will handle a close tag if he ever gets one.

Have a look at his first half against Essendon, when the gane was still in the balance. Pendles was easily our best player to half time.

Have a look at his first half against Essendon, when the gane was still in the balance. Pendles was easily our best player to half time.
BTW - apart from the Essendon game, Pendles has been tagged closely all this season.
Rubbish he was by far it was swan have a look at the replay the and check his stats for the second quarter. That's why knights gave him two coaches votes on footy classifieds - and swan has had the heavy tag not pendles i mean the best tagger each team has gone to him - he played only 58% of game time and got supercoach score of 125 even after being tagged by slattery who was on didak early in the game.

And about dal santo, well known that he struggles with a tag never been able to cope but i think he had pendles play the game very similar love to see how pendles will handle a close tag if he ever gets one.
he did have to work for his possessions he had 10 contested possessions...

He got most of his touches in the third quarter and it was because of this that the game was put beyond doubt. He spent over 15 minutes on the bench in the last quarter and only played 78% game time overall.

That is a far more accurate assessment.
All players stats are in some way bolstered by such fluctuations in the play...no-one questions how many possessions they got at what point in a game.
Statistically, a possession is a possession.

yes, four of them were on the wing in front of me when he was playing catching with two other players then finally decided to pass it to swan who had lead earlier when he first got the ball - he was chasing the medal in my opinion. No-one was following him he would come on and get a few and the game was over by last quarter they didnt need swan, pendles or shaw on - just think there is too much hype about him and some others whose workrate is better are being left out. My decision on him will be when the good tagger plays on him.
