View Full Version : Garland - Do something tomorrow, anything

All credit to the kid for going back to Sandy and getting best on honours, we couldn't have asked for anything more.
However, tomorrow will be his 4th AFL game of '08, and if he wants to increase that tally, he'll need to show that he can cut it at this level. It might just be one kick, one piece of play, one spoil - but give us something Colin.
We've heard lots about of him throughout the pre-season, hes the quickest player over 400m Robbo had ever seen, now he just needs to transfer it all onto the AFL stage.
The same could be said for everyone else.

I am this kids biggest critic. Aside from Colin himself most likely. I wish him all the best because he's a Melbourne player and there has never been a Melbourne player where I didn't want them to do well.
THAT SAID I have absolutely NFI as to where this kid plays and what his strengths are. He has done nothing to suggest that he's going to be a first 18 player, but hopefully he'll step up to the plate this week as BC said. Otherwise FTT:mad:

I really want to see Garland up forward and not down back. I just look back at the goal he kick from about 55m out in the pre season and thought to myself, hey we could have a quailty forward here, yet i dont think i have seen him in our 50 since.

Thing is we drafted garland as a forward thats why he has so much pace great set of hands aswell. Not this kids fault cannot get a game in the forward for sandy is it. It's his 4th game this season 6 overall and its only his second season least his impressing in VFL level some of our players cannot even do that

I don't really see much in him to be honest hopefully he can prove me wrong, his contract runs out at the end of this season he would want to show something to get a new one!

Thats disappointing he hasnt even had two seasons whats Newton showed really apart from being able to take the odd specky and being absolutley slow on the ground and hes had four seasons.
Newton can kick goals, Garland can't do anything.

hes had two more seasons and if he could kick goals would be in the side mate. Garlands second seasons and is playing better in the VFL then Newton ever has. Has Newton got bog for sandy b4?

Newton had a fair few good games for Sandy last year before he finally got into the Melbourne side and stayed there.

well maybe should lay off garland and give him to next year to keep his spot in the team which would be the same year as newton apparently played ok

Like punching straight up in the air so we cop goals? I thought he was shite. Shows that everyone sees stuff differently.

He was shite in some moments and OK in others...
Needs more of a chance I feel....much better than Frawley today anyway

Well Farmer didn't kick 7 on us like he always does, so he must of done something right.
Although the Double Fist Volley, i could have done without.

Definitely wasn't shite, but was fairly average. Did anyone see where he marked the ball from behind Farmer on a lead and could just run off him, it was a moment that showed his tremendous potential and I'm now confident he might make a player, but not this year. Also he kicked out a couple of times and did ok at it.

Yeh i think he did ok the volley thing was a mistake but that also comes down to talk amoungst players have to admit that mark against farmer proves should play up forward a bit more

Bit of good, bit of bad.
5/10
Liked a couple of his spoils, and earns his pay cheque due to keeping Farmer to 2 goals - not 7!! Deserves another crack.

He was allright today, made some errors, but also took a good contested mark if that's the sort of sign you're looking for. But one question, why in god's name was he on Farmer, never mind in the backline. He is a natural forward, surely your defence isn't that bad that you need to put a 5 game player on the oppositions second best forward?
For christs sake Dean Bailey, PLAY THE BOY UP FORWARD! He is not a defender, never has been, never will be.
Got drafted off the back of dominating up forward for Tassie in the U/18's, and dominating in Tasmanias Southern Premier League as a forward.
He is a tall forward and playing as a small defender, the mind baffles!

We don't need him down forward.
He'd just clog up the space needed for Miller, Robbo and Green to lead into.
We don't need him down forward.
Oh, but you do!
With finals well and truly out of the equation, im just surprised he hasnt been put up forward, where he could play his natural game and perhaps provide some spark, maybe even take the weight off robbos's shoulders.
Would be like J. Riewoldt playing on the opposition small forward every week, purely illogical.

I do agree his best work is forward but you have to start somewhere, and he has the speed to play as a small backman. Neitz was a backman first and I'd love to see Garland end up with the record up forward that Neitz has.

Wasnt the double-fisted volley in the defensive 50 by Junior? Really poor decision but i take it no-one was talking to him.
I'am a big critic of Garland, in the games i had seen he looked disinterested, lacked intensity and was SLOW. Thing is he's lightning. And he showed it yesterday. Even when farmer did get on the lead and marked, garland was right there on his hammer each time.
He showed something yesterday, I bet our recruiters breathed a sigh of relief.
I'm in agreeance with the earlier comment about frawley - each time he went near it i initially thought it was Garland. His workrate was a disgrace and was jogging to contests and had zero intensity. I was disappointed with his game.
That loss will gut freo, fair enough being run-over by the cats but the winless dees to do it will hurt them.
Only the most optimistic melb supporter could've given us a chance, brilliant character building win for the group.
Garland did a reasonable job, made a couple of bad mistakes but showed something at least.

What's in a word? It's the best the Southern part of the state has to offer.
Regardless, I disagree with your comment. Why stifle a players development by playing him out of position? Brad Miller down back & Garland up forward will do more for your future than the other way around. Garland is a forward, not a defender. And I see no reason why you'd keep him down back!
^^^ Brad Miller cannot play back.

Junior did the double fisted one in i think the 3rd quarter, but Garland jumped up un-opposed in the last quarter and single fisted the ball which went over the back of the pack and farmer ran onto it and drilled it along the ground for a goal.
Just after Robbo put us within 9pts with 14 & 1/2 mins to go, after the centre bounce the wondering goalpost bombed it into their forward line and Col punched it forward for farmer to run onto. Their first goal of the quarter & put them back to 15pts with 14 mins to play. Watch the youtube highlights from about 5:30 min mark.
It wasn't solely his fault, he should have been told to mark it, but it was a rookie error to let the punch go towards goal, Setana O'hailpin-esq, and in the context of the situation, it could've turned the momentum and cost us the game.
