Are you a fan of Brit rock or could do without it, wishing the weedy geezers with the weird hairdos would clear out?

I'm a big fan of Brit rock, IMHO Brit rock has been the only genre of music to consistently release good quality music of the last couple of years.

The British rock scene has always been strong and I've always been a fan but at the moment they really do have great bands/musicians out there ranging from Gomez to Catalonia to Richard Ashcroft.

My faves at the moment are: Coldplay - I love their stuff, Travis, Radiohead, Blur, and the Urban Hymns album from The Verve.

Which bands are your fave Brit rock bands?

Isn't the title of this thread an oxymoron? ;)

Yeah, on reflection I'd agree the title is an oxymoron, purely unintended though!

One of my favourite British albums is 'A Northern Soul', by 'The Verve'. I'm actually listening to a song from it now. It is an absolute masterpiece. Artistic, yet also strikingly fashionable.

The album came out in 1995, before the band split up for the first time, to later reform for the more popularly known 'Urban Hymns'.

Have any of you heard that this is the first time in 40 years where a British band has not been on the Billboard 100?

Music comment of the year, America the land of milk and honey, where they all have white teeth and order coffee funny.

For mine is sh1t music. Can't stand r&b (give me the original), rap (old school was cool), lame pop N'Sync, Brittany is just crap the only person whoever listens to this is a 12 year old girl.

Don't get me wrong fairly broad statement but at the same time they did bring the world

I think England have always produced the best "rock" music.

Oasis, Supergrass, Coldplay, Verve, Blur & Gomez have all been pretty good exponents of the craft over the last decade.

For mine, Doves are a standout at the minute. Great atmospheric, unpretentious "coffee-table" rock. I could listen to a song called The Cedar Room on repeat for days and it would still maintain its brilliance!

Not everyone's cup of English breakfast tea, but for mine, Radiohead are a class above any other band in the world. OK Computer was something really special and was the best album of the 90's. Kid A is so extremely difficult to get into, but it is worth it and is in my opinion better than OKC. New album out mid-next year.

FIGJAM, I always thought the idea of 'rock' was to challenge? When 'rock first hit us humans it was dangerous and exciting, not for 'coffee tables' or 'atmospherics'. I put it to you that the music you enjoy is actually 'pop music'.

Then Pink Floyd shall herin be referred to as pop music.

Classification is blurred nowdays anyway. Rock to me now means the generic crap that is played on Tripple M. Pop is the generic crap they play on Fox.

My current favourite bands consist of Radiohead, Tool, Doves and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I don't think they get any play on either of the aforementioned stations and to say that these bands aren't challenging is ignorant!

As for danger, there ain't much that hasn't been done and I have heard and appreciated it all from Debussy to Deicide. For me, the shock value isn't important any more, just quality of composition and thought.

Pink Floyd ARE pop music in my eyes. It's called opinion FIGJAM and that's just mine.
Now as for insinuating that I'm ignorant, well I must be because I find most of the bands you mentioned unchallenging. Again it's my opinion, but if a band bores me eg. Radiohead, Doves & Tool (sometimes) then they're not challenging me. However if I hear something new that I like then I'm willing to change that opinion.
You seemed to have twisted my original 'light hearted' response into something sinister. I commented on your 'coffee table' and 'atmospheric' description not your whole musical taste. Remember that not everyone agrees that the people YOU consider geniuses are geniuses.
I know that more people think the music I love is sh*t than think it's great, but so what? I love it and that will do, although I think it's unfortunate more don't understand that it is 'real' rock. ;)
