Sorry about the late thread, just got back from wekend away.
I am amazed there has been no comment about the period just before Geelong kicked there 6 or so unanswered goals before half time.

We had possession in the back line and instead of continuing the attack that had pushed us forward by 39pts I saw 2 players in a row hold the ball above heads (indicating slow game down I think). We coughed it up and they goaled and Geelong had us from there.

We are not skilled enough to play "tempo" football and it sends completely the wrong message to the team and the opposition.

I think that moment REALLY hurt us in terms of confidence.

I agree with your comment. Tempo footy is the worst to happen to the game. While the players are during to decide who to chip kick it to next, it gives the opposition time to intercept the ball.

We were better off trying to get a few more goals.

Apparently it was a directive from the coaching staff coz the players were stuffed.

German has already said it was an error on their part.

Tempo football should - if ever - only be tried in the last one to two minutes of a quarter.

Unfortunately - and stupidly - there was 7-8 minutes left when the call went out to slow the game down. Any side would cought the ball up trying to play keepings off for that long against a skilled, fast side like Geelong.

Also given out sh!t midfield it is easy for opposition sides to turn one goal into three, five or in Geelongs case seven successive goals in a short period of time because of our inability to win the ball in the centre.

I was at the game and as soon as the chipping started my brother joked 'here come geelong'.
That kick from Gilmore to 3 cats players on our half back flank really didnt help either.

I was watching the game at home and that ball above the head moment was the first time I felt good about the game. To me anyway, it seemed to signal that Freo had exceeded their expectations in terms of the game and didn't believe they could keep playing in that style that had got them so far ahead.

Just my read on it.

I've got no problem with the tactic, but it needs to corniced with an ability to shut the game down in stoppages, like Sydney are so good at doing ... mind you they lost to Geelong at the hands of similar burst scoring run, so who knows.

Way too early in the quarter to do it and only going to work if they could control the stoppage situation, which they couldn't - that's my 2c.

My bad, too much south park. Anyway to be on topic, I agree with the fact we tried to slow it down way too early giving Geelong a heads up of what we are doing whether it is securing a good lead into the long break or the fact we were tired. But I'm over it now as well, time to move forward.

While we slowed the game down, we didn't play a man loose in defense early enough. When Solly went back i think the only kicked anohter 2, but the damage had been done. If your going to slow the play down or the opposition has got 2 goals in succession you NEED to have an extra man back. Harvs was just a little too slow to make the call.

Top post mate, I was watching the game & going crazy with my father in law & saying why are they doing this & this will trigger a Cats comeback.

When are teams going to stop doing this, it cost Richmond the game against Bulldogs.

I can understand trying to do this if other team has a major run-on, but to do it when your team has the momentum is ABSURD.

I'd be interested to see if we had played the same way up to that point but been down by 4 goals. Would we have slowed it down? Did we know we were going to be in front?

I mean we can criticise them fordoing it but they obviously couldnt keep that tempo up. Think about it, if we had burnt ourselves out in that last 7-8 minutes we might not have been able to pile on some goals in the third? Plus if Pavs shot had gone through, we wouldnt be criticising the move we would be saying it was good coaching to allow enough gas to run out the game...

By the way not blaming Pav for the loss, he out and out is a class player for us and did above and beyond his job as usual...
