Magpies Move Into Four
The make up of the Sydney AFL final four is still wide open after the penultimate round.
Western Suburbs’ 46 point win over Balmain at Drummoyne last Sunday came as something of a surprise, but the Magpies adapted better to the windy conditions.
As expected, it was a spirited, physical affair between two clubs that have plenty of recent ‘history’. Wests’ win was built on four straight goals into the wind in the first term, with the Magpies’ accuracy in front of goal proving telling in the end. Lenton kicked eight and Lee Campbell kicked five for the victors, who showed the potential of their strong forward set up. Troy Luff’s recent bag of big tallies came to an end with the ex-Swan kicking three for the Tigers.
“It finally came together for us,” said Wests’ coach Laine Spencer after the game. “So many players were so pumped up.”
The Magpies prepared well for the game and were effective in limiting the influence of the Tiger’s key players – most notable centre-half-forward Warren Cruse who has been so damaging for Balmain in the past.
Wests’ win edges them in front of the Tigers, but they must now overcome the might of UNSW – Eastern Suburbs who registered a 162 point win over a struggling Campbelltown at the Village Green.
It was a heart-stopping affair at Olds Park, where a late surge by North Shore almost saw them topple a St George side that had moved out to a commanding lead by three quarter time.
North Shore edged in front of the Crows before St George fought back to win by the narrowest of margins.
On Saturday afternoon the Redbacks defeated the East Coast Eagles at the SCG.
With UNSW – Eastern Suburbs assured of the minor premiership and North Shore also confirmed as a finalist, St George, Balmain and Western Suburbs must all win in the final round to be in a chance for finals action.
