yes, I went to the first show and thought that it was fantastic. so much so that I have written a review of it:
It was a Kylie concert, and that’s as good a reason as any for some members of the audience to glam up for the night. Doctors and nurses outfits, feather boas, tiaras, plenty of cowboy hats, and of course, Kylie T-shirts that went for $45 a pop.
There were two opening acts – Origene and Shakaya. Origene played the kind of Britpop that is not too dissimilar to Kylie. The lead singer even looked a bit like Gerri Halliwell. Shakaya was more R n’ B, but to me, they looked and sounded like a inferior version of Destiny’s Child, although one of the female singers did a fair imitation of Beyonce Knowles.
Rod Laver Arena was packed to the rafters. I read in the papers that the “Fever” tour had a bigger stage, in terms of props and stage pieces, than U2. A catwalk extended into the floor section, right in the midst of those fortunate enough to purchase Gold Seats. Kylie’s set was divided into six, separately themed “acts”. Twelve of her costumes were apparently designed by Dolce e Gabbana. I have not listed all the songs, merely some highlights.
The show commenced to the first two lines from the Sound of Music! The First Act, “Silvernemesis”, saw Kylie emerge from a trap door in a metallic silver outfit that looked like Mr. Freeze from the Batman movies. She opened with “Come Into My World”, followed by the old favourite, “Shocked”. The dancers were clothed in silver, metallic coloured suits. Six screens, some lowered from the ceiling, provided various animations and computer graphics.“Boogie Nights” was the Second Act. Kylie purred on a bed as she sang the title track “Fever”. It was also surprising to hear her do a song from the much maligned album, “Impossible Princess”, in this case “Cowboy Style”.
This was followed by the Third Act called “The Crying Game”, where Kylie reprised Boy George’s song in a sexy black laced dress. It was here that she also displayed her vocal prowess, hitting and sustaining high notes with ease. Move over Mariah, and let’s see Madonna do that! The Fourth Act was called “Streetstyle” where Kylie was dressed as (someone hold me down) a police officer!
One of the dancers was an incredible acrobat who did a number of impressive martial arts, acrobatic and breakdancing routines. I thought I was at the Shaolin Monks show rather than Kylie! But at least I’ve finally found a way to dance to “Confide In Me”.
The Fifth Act, called “Set In Venice”, can only be described as a faux Bordello set!!“Cybertronica”, the final act, was a neon cross between Cirque Du Soleil and Batman and Robin. Masked ninjas with neon swords pranced on stage, while Kylie takes a trip back to the 80s with a nice fluorescent outfit. I think it was also in this set (or the previous one) that she did the BEST EVER version of “Locomotion”. I will never listen to the old version in the same way again!!
The First Encore, “VoodooInferno” was the perfect setting for a rousing version of “Better the Devil You know”, which rocked the house down. The final encore was, of course, the hit single “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”.
I honestly cannot fault the show. Love her music or not, there’s no doubting that Kylie is a consummate entertainer and showperson. She has definitely stepped up a few notches, in terms of costumes, set design and choreography, since her last tour. You’d have to be dead not to be entertained :) The only thing for me was that she didn’t play enough from “Fever”, particularly “Dancefloor”, “Your Love”, “Fragile” and “Tightrope”. However, these are minor quibbles when compared to the overall show, which was well worth the money!
Yes, I went and I was well impressed. Wasn't expecting much - not a huge Kylie fan - but she was a great entertainer.
say.. did anyone catch that kylie concert on tv the other nite??
no comment about the music or concert..
but did anyone notice at gal in the audience... bouncing away in an extremely revealing top? (basically no-front top).. ?
fortunately the cameraman noticed it, and kept repeatedly panning towards her..
