I don't care about umpire cams, Goal post cams or live conversations with coaches.
Why not let the game be the showpiece? Not the coverage

Trying to cover up the fact the game won't be much chop.

Good post, I agree. I have never heard so much dribble come out of people's mouths before a game - get on with the coverage.....

Its funny how the average person sitting at home could tell that was going to be a shit innovation. What do these people get paid for!
Why not put a camera on the ball so we can see it spinning around and around as it goes through the goals!

Since when were Channel 10 or Channel 7 not about themselves rather than the game?
Two funny things so far:
Several of the Channel 10 commentators saying how they might be able to use the cameras for goal line decisions. Ummm, we don't have replays in footy, never will.
Christie Malthouse asking Daniel Kerr if he would be right for next week. I know she got that job because of her top journalism.
Worst coverage ever, embarassing and an absolute joke.

lol. Corey Worthington to come out as the mystery player. Isn't aligned to a team so will kick where he wants.
He will also have 31 cameras strapped to him.

1 play-by-play commentator, 1 special comments, and 1 boundary rider, is all thats required.

Maybe in the last half Brown has to sit in a Combi Van,

yeah, so far just about all the innovations for the game have been shite:
post cam - not being used what it should be used for; those line ball decisions where the viewer is uncertain whether the ball has been touched before the goal line.
umpire/runner cam - not of the lens quality of the main cameras, and is the constant bobing up and down meant to make me nauseous? audio is terrible with the runner came, so theres no point having it. and i dont care if a goal umpire can write on a peice of paper.
interchange cam - only good when those 8 players came off at once.
the boundary riders aren't earning their money either.......
really wish nine had the footy back, or you could hear the triple m guys over the top instead...

10 May 2008, 21:32
I like how they spend more time talking about the camera angle than the actual vision.
And whoever called UmpCam ZitCam is spot on. That shit was gross.
Hudson and Voss have just spent five "analyser" minutes raving about the cameras again and hoping they would have more opportunities to use it during the year. That is great use of an expert commentator analysing the game!! What a bunch of tools!

Christie Malthouse is the dumbest person out there. Im sure boundary riders make stuff up.
After Kerr was injured she said, "ive just went and talked to Kerr, and he said he should be alright to play next week. So i think Kerr is good to play next week." Kerr wouldnt say that, as he knows hes suspended.
Did she even talk to Kerr or is she talking shit.

....and as the final minutes of the telecast die away, instead of showcasing the players and their talents, another 5 minutes is wasted looking at replays of Umpires cam, and runner cam, and goalpost cam (which quite frankly shows less than what the goal umpire at the other end could see, but don't tell the commentators that....they think the afl should SERIOUSLY consider taking this technology on board).

They had obviously decided not to take the match seriously. They even decided to show fights in the outer at one point.
Doubt umpire cam will see the light of day again until they get camera wait under 500 gms. 3.5 kgs, tonights camera weight, is just an insane burden on the umps.

What the current situation does is encourage inane banter between them, little in-jokes repeated thru'out the course of a match and just general laziness that detracts from their coverage.

Fox Sports >> Ten > Seven
Who the F%*k is Ten trying to Kid? Goal-post cam, umpire cam, bench cam - this is revolutionary?
The ABC have put a camera on goal umpires in the SANFL for years, they've put cameras in the goal-posts as well. They act as if the idea of having a stationary camera positioned somewhere on the ground is a new idea - cricket has had cameras in stumps for a decade or more.
Worst of all was when they were showing off the 'bench cam'. Wow! you have a camera looking at the bench - how amazing!
I think using the bench camera and cameras in a goal post is a decent idea, but they way they were promoting them was just shocking.
FlyingCrow
11 May 2008, 00:58
I dont understand why the umpires were so bulky with the camera equipment. The SANFL have been doing the Goal Umpire Cam for years. And there is very little bulkiness to the camera.
Maybe the ABC has a better budget to spend on Technology than Ten...
Umpire cam was great. Love seeing the ground as the umpire bounces the ball, and his teeth and cheek as he talks to a player...;)

FFS AFL dont give the rights to 7 & 10 again.
What an absolute joke that coverage was.

Watching a goal umpire fill in his card....WTF?
No presentation, they piss off to F1 qualifying.

11 May 2008, 01:27
The umpires looked ridiculous with those cam suits underneath - looked like they had a set of massive tits.
I don't understand why they needed that much bulk for a camera - the ABC have had a goal umpire cam since 2001, where the camera is simply placed on the goal umpires cap, and the wiring is so minimal the goal umpires look no different physically, and the camera shots don't look too bad.
September_Glory
11 May 2008, 01:30
Just wanted to say the goal umpires with the camera equipment look ridiculous tonight. In fact all the extra cameras were pointless.
The answer to the topic is YES. What was with that ridiculous promo right at the start of the telecast? Showing historic grand final wins and then comparing it to this. There were no 'big moments', and there was no cup to win. Also, Wallsy repeating his "Judd-Selwood shoulder" joke for the 3rd time in one week (radio not included)... Was met with absolute silence in the commentary box.

Nobody can complain about the goal-post cam. It is a benefit to the game, no matter WHAT you pathetic whingers want to whine about.
It'll be standard by next year, because it can be a real benefit. The only reason it won't be is if the AFL decides it's too intrusive and revealing when umpires ____-up.

This must have been a local channel 10 thing, 'cause we saw the presentation of a big shiny dish thing to Brown and Thompson:
Bomber: Do they want me to go up too? do they want Me? Do they?
Obviously no-one had told him, cause he wasn't expecting it.:o
And we saw the presentation of the medal prior to that as well.
Your channel Ten must have prioritized the selling of a George Formen fat burning grill (or something similar) higher than the presentations.
