Lexton league hoses down rumors
MARK HOGAN
Lexton Plains Football League assistantsecretary Ted Gaffney has confirmed that a push to attract new clubs to the league is nothing more than a rumor.
While he admitted that Avoca was considering a shift to a neighboring league, Gaffney said stories that the Lexton league was trying to attract Mininera and District Football League clubs Tatyoon and SMW Rovers were untrue.
``There is no real substance to that rumor.
``It is pie in the sky stuff and I would have to sayat this point in time, absolutely nothing has come from the league.
``Avoca, however, as is their want, expressed to us that they are thinking about having a look around, but that is their decision,'' Gaffney said.
``I don't have a crystal ball so I can't really saywhat is going to happen, but I think you often get these type of strories circulating at this time of year.''
The Lexton Plains league has been operating for three years following a merger between the Lexton league and the Western Plains Football League.
The league stretches from Bealiba and Navarre in the north down as far as Rokewood in the south, but since its formation has lost Dunolly to another league, while former Lexton league clubs Marnoo and Landsborough have both folded.
If Avoca left the Lexton Plains League the competition would be left with eight teams, including Skipton and the Ararat Eagles who are geographically located close to the Mininera league.
Like Gaffney, MDFL president David Martin said his league had not spoken to any outside clubs about joining their competition.
