View Full Version : How good is Masten going to be?

Seems like he came up a notch in the first half against the Kangas tonight.
He looms as a super-important player for us in the future.
How high should our expectations be?
Is he going to be a superstar or just a solid best 22 player?
He already better than just top 22!! Top 5 for sure....

superstar. Has the poise and decision making of a player 10 years his senior. Kicking is very good for an in and under player, and has good pace. Jimmy Bartel mk 2. All we need to do is bulk him up and he will develop by himself as he has very few (if any) weaknesses thus far. Him, kerr, priddis, hurn, butler, ebert, waters and rich (hopefully) will make up a gun midfield for years to come.
pretty much the best player in the competition already.
nah but he's coming along nicely, does good things and is having an impact.
i reckon in a few years time he'll be one of the real young guns of the AFL.
Going to be very good from what i've seen so far. Go opportunities that he wouldn't have got in our 05-07 team and has really stood up, excellent in close, a decent kick, and still has a lot of upside.
I don't want to go over the top or anything, but he could be the greatest playing in the history of professional sport.
Extremely happy with his development so far. Will be a top player for us in years to come. :thumbsu:

Think Ebert has been pretty good tonight as well so far

Just continually generates a huge amount of football in close
Once he's bigger and more experienced he will be bloody good
and schofield!! he's been brilliant in defence.
im very impressed.
also, staker and fletch...the two lesser liked guys are playing very well.

Also we are more physical around packs, tackles are sticking. I love it!

Woosh was right it was between the ears. They got the talent they just got to keep this up. We got to give em no oxygen from now on.

I'm looking forward to seeing him in combination with Kerr and Priddis in a couple of years time - the makings of a pretty handy midfield trio there.
Throw Rich in and its an awesome foursome:p

If Kerr played we probably would've won. Interesting that Rawlings went to Masten in the third I think it was.

He dominated from start to finish, first game he did that this season. Now lets hope he shows more of this.:thumbsu:
Says a shitload about his footballing skills when Laidleuy put Rawlings on him.
Very good extractor and tackler.
Great kicking also.
Love him to bits.

Just keeps getting better and better with each game, not sure exactly how good he'll be but there is defiantly a huge amount of potential be a top notch player, most definitely has the ability and the determination. Really attacks the ball and I'm really enjoying watching him progress with each game, could be come a favourite :thumbsu:
Just need to win a game as him along with a few others havent been in a winning side yet and need to sing the song.

Very good player in the making, maybe star.
His in close work his great, his footskills are crisp, and his running and work rate are Cousinsish- makes second or third efforts all the time, and gets to multiple contests in one passage of play on the back of hard running.
He's not a line breaker or natural goal kicker, but he'll be a phenomenal onballer if he develops on song.

Gee this is exciting. Kennedy, Masten, McKinley, Ebert and Schofield have all shown signs that they could be above average to elite players.
Masten was awesome tonight. Those shotgun hands hes got are brilliant and he hits the target every time.

Really looking forward to the game this year when we have a full list (-Brown) to pick from. Masten should not be tagged at this stage of his career but thats how it is right now. With kerr, priddis and stinga/butler in the middle, chris can be freed up.
Watched a few 2006 games over the last week. Butler is a very smart, creative footballer. Just what is missing. Can't wait to see him again in the blue and gold.

wait til Notte gets a game - you might find yourself thinking one end of the ground has 5 goal posts.
I'm excited about Masten - he looks the goods, but I don't want to pump the kid up too much - I don't want to be disappointed!
Very good.
He's a thrill to watch, one of the current few highlights that i've had watching footy these past rounds.
Tonight was only an exception becaus the whole NOT GETTING PUMMELLED was a bit of a highlight for me, but he still shone :D

There is absolutely no chance that this boy will not be the greatest sportsman in the history of the world. ;)
EDIT: page get :)
I think if he played for a Melbourne club, he would be getting more of the public / media attention right now. Everyone is in love with Cotchin after his 16 disposal, 2 goal effort, but Masten has been doing all that and more every game so far. He just has class, smooth skills, great hands, all he needs to work on is kicking some goals.
He may be getting 21 possessions and the Pricktorians will be saying. Ah well but its just what he does with it and how he gets it that make those 21 possessions seem like 30+
Hes leading our goal assits by a fair bit and hes missed 3 games. His passing inside 50 is probably the best I have seen by a Eagle since Peter Matera. Its deadly. He gets the contested ball. Can get on his feet from being on the ground in a flash and loves a tackle.
VERY happy with our decision here.

The passage of play where he got the contested ball, ran off the pack and delivered that nice ball right on Kennedy's chest who then goaled, made me smile. We have some something on our hands. Wait till Kerr comes back in, we could win around 7-8 games.
Any chance for rising star nomination this week?

would have to be one of the main contenders for the rising star for sure but has barely rated a mention over here in melbourne

Surely he'd be the front runner with his consistancy.

Most of our team looks small and skinny compared to opposition now.
I'm trying to keep a lid on it because I don't want too much pressure on the bloke, but he has been very impressive :thumbsu:
Seems to have learned a HEAP already, developing rapidly.. and his decision making and skills have been excellent.

Very happy with the way Masten is coming along. He seems to be very good in most areas. People seem to be critical of his disposal, but from what I've seen, it's been excellent. For him to make the leap to top ten in the league, I'd like to see him work on his evasive skills, drawing a couple of opponents then stepping by them, like Cousins used to do and Kerr still does.

He is developing very quickly and doesnt look out of place out there(except for his slight frame). I just wish the commentators would get his name right! Its 'MAH-STEN' not 'MASS-TEN'. It gave me the shits last night considering these 'expert commentators' cant even pronounce a blokes name right. Do they not do any research or they just read whats put in front of them?
Very impressive, all class.
Almost as good as Palmer..

"The Godson" has been a revelation this year
He'll be a star, no doubt.
Imagine a couple of years from now, Fremantle V West Coast in the derby, him & Palmer facing off at opposite ends..
Makes me drool just thinking about it.
Yep, no doubt he's improving rapidly at the moment. No wonder the coaching staff were pretty excited pre-season about getting games into him.
A lot of people say he reminds them of Bartel, but does Bartel get in tight, contested positions as much? It's Masten's bread and butter and I've said a lot of times before, he seems to love it in close.

Aside from the occasional contested mark around the ground the in and under style is what defines Bartel.

I don't know about the Bartel comparison, they can both win ball well in tight and a lot of it, Masten seems a much smoother mover, but I don't think he would be close to possessing Bartel's excellent O/H and contested marking - which is his most valuable asset.
Reminds me much more of Black with his lightning hands (there were a couple of times last night where I thought how the hell did he get the ball out), workrate/running ability and general movement/style - particularly how he just keeps the team moving forward e.g. that passage of play where he had about 3-4 efforts and ended up resulting in a Staker soccer goal.

He is a cross breed between Black and Bartel..Blactel maybe? :o
He has both of their attributes, good for us.:D

Honestly who knows what he could do?

Well said, that play was the highlight of the game for me.
will be top tier afl mid, no doubt. Probably top 2-3 in our team within 2-3 yrs
