Hawthorn is on the verge of two historic achievements.
Victory this Sunday would not only give the club a 9-0 record – its best ever start to a season, but would also put Hawthorn ahead in the head-to-head battle against Melbourne for the first time ever.
If Hawthorn records its ninth consecutive century score this Sunday, it will equal the second best such sequence in the club’s history.
The club’s longest sequence of century scores is 11 in 1982, followed by runs of 9 in both 1987 and 1989.
The leading individual goalkicker against Melbourne is Peter Hudson who booted 16 in Round 5, 1969. Hudson also holds the Round 9 record and has done so for the past 40 years. He booted 10, in a 30 point victory over Fitzroy at Glenferrie, in this round in 1968.
Hawthorn is yet to lose a last quarter.
If you have any others feel free to post.
Thanks for the stats, always a good read. Just wondering about the Peter Hudson ones though, are they just for Hawthorn players or for the whole AFL?

I have another. Let it act as a reminder not to get too far ahead of ourselves
In 2001 we were 8-0 after 8 rounds, having pumped Collingwood, Carlton, Freo, Melbourne, Scraggers, Crows Saints and Eagles.
We then met the scum in round 9 at the dome and got thoroughly touched up. Barker kicked a gem from outside 50 late in the game, but this was the only highlight in an 11 goal thrashing.
That was the beginning of a 1-4 sequence.
Suggest we celebrate the sequences AFTER they occur rather than getting too hooked on anticipation (Crawfs 300th aside).
There is a very good reason why these records stand. They are f'ing hard to beat.

I have bad memories of that Esserdon game...remember that inane song that was played after each Bombres goal?? "let's get loud"...hated the song before that game, made it particularly worse considering it was played 18 times that horrible evening.

Jesus, I had forgotten it until you mentioned it. I went alone, only seat I could get was in the disabled area. I was sitting next to some fat chick essendon support who shook her booty each time Lloyd kicked a goal (he kicked about 9)
Perhaps the worst night of my life. Never want to hear Jennifer lopez again

It was a 15 or so point margin in 2001 Prelim and Melbourne 2008 are no Essendon circa 2001.

Horrible, horrible night. I think even Jonathan Robran (playing for the Scum) snagged a couple that night?? Not 100% sure if thats right but I know he played! It was the beginning of the end that night.

Saw it last night for the first time. Unbelievable. I have never seen such devotion to the cause. Run by some guy Paul Jeffs. Check it out. Virtually every stat you could imagine on all games including all match scores back to 1897.

I think I'd take JLo anyday ahead of a fat essendon supporter!!
Talking about fat ppl...It was that fat-ass Essendon President (Graham McMahon) who refused to move the match to the G - scared that some Hawk supporters would turn up to the game..Then proceeded to order the Dome officials to play that crap upon each Ess goal.
