AS TWO of the AFL's hard men - Fraser Gehrig and David Neitz - move on, we remember Dermott Brereton's debut.

It remains one of the finest first-games in league history - five goals in a finals match, as the Hawks beat North Melbourne.

Wearing the not-so-famous No.47, a distinctly skinny and non-blond Brereton ran the Kangaroos' defenders ragged. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=EZkxaRNEQd0)

Two of the goals were gimmes, but three were beauties from distance. And as a bonus, Dermie talks us through the moments.

Loved Mathews bump in the first quarter! Still one of the best Debuts by any-one!A great servant of the HFC.:thumbsu:

Yes, I was there that day and for me it sealed the fact our team wasn't ready to win a premiership yet (we were smashed by Carlton the week prior) but we were building. Dermie, with red hair and aggression was a star in the making and would go on to be one of the ultimate big game players we've ever had. It's one of the finest debuts I've ever seen but doesn't eclipse Johnny Platens debut about 3 years later.
Was this game on foxtel sometime during last off season?

Agreed NHM..........he was a treat for all of us to watch...I always believed we could win while he was out there.....he did some amazing things for the club (that game against Richmond - where he had broken ribs? and wore a life-jacket and then went and kicked a lazy 11....) legendary stuff.....
