View Full Version : Bad calls
Just looking through the drafts and trading board and someone bumped up an old thread.
Here is someone's post on Scott Pendlebury.
IMO, this guy will be no good, i hope he proves me wrong, collingwood picked him up because of his athletic/basketballing background, thats all good if it was the NBL, why do Collingwood draft so bad, e need Greg Miller or sumone like that to steady our draft/trading negotiations, cos they are just ********.
Greg Miller?
So do you have any other gems from past. If you look hard enough you'll get a lot of people saying Swan has to go and me praising Brent Hall and Matthew Lokan as the next McLeod.
Noticed that earlier. Had a little chuckle.
At the moment I'm looking pretty ordinary with the backing I've given Chris Egan over the last year or 2.
damien adkins was one i talked up a lot lol :o he was exciting though , gotta give him that. shame about the op i think it was that he had

go on nicks page, and in the trades and drafting section, there are plenty of bumped threads from when we drafted pendles, and boy was there a bit of a backlash back then
quite interesting to read

There were a few about Heath Shaw being a waste of a pick, but that was warranted early on from what I hear.

Brent Tuckey and Chris Tarrant debuted on the same day, from memory. Didnt think much of Tarrrant, but I thought Tuckey was going to be a star.

Brayden was supposed to be the pick of the bunch.

Yup.
Chances are we only drafted Heath to make sure Rhyce wasn't upset.
From what I hear Heath was near useless as a junior and early on in his Collingwood career.
It's his kind of story that makes me want to stick with guys like Danny Stanley.

I thought David Fanning would be the Next Great Pie Ruckman,
How wrong was I:o
Richie Cole. I really thought he'd be OK even when we traded him.
And yes I really did believe that Aaron James would be the next Wayne Carey.

Playing in my Footy league and is still a star.
Not dobbing, but occasional poster Pendles did back Ben Davies throughout his 'career' at Collingwood to become something special. Having said that, I think Pendles IS Ben Davies... :D

What position does he play? Does he win the competition b&f?

Sounds like he's doing good. I guess even average AFL players look awesome in the community. It'd be like me playing under 8's! That'd be fun!!
As for the Twix, based on those averages, I'd be backing up the truck if I were you! You're on a roll... stick with it! I wanna see you Twixing it up until you can take no more!
Yup.

Near useless is a bit too far, he was injured a lot in his junior days and struggled with illness. I think if we hadn't picked him up he would have been taken by a club still.
Winning the Wimmera League Medal doesn't make him a star.
It makes him a good bush footballer.
He is bush league, this proves it.

Other then occasionally talking up some of our younger players, like every fan is supposed to, I don't think I've ever made an outlandish bad call. If I have then prove it!!

one of my earliest footy memories was as a kid watching sav rocca play in his 1st or 2nd game with my dad and his best mate.
dad goes something like: 'big boy, holds it funny but will be a star'
his best mate states: 'absolutely won't play 10 games, there is no way in hell this bloke will make it past this yr. Hack. HACK!!!!'.
we still remind him about it to this very day. ahhh but isn't the outlandish statements half the fun?? :)

Jason Cloke, Mark McGough - Two very promising players. Both lack pace and their kicking is poor at times. Both players are FOOTBALLERS. Both will be 10 year stars for Collingwood. Solid and good play readers. Already generally good decision making will improve rapidly and skills will pick up accordingly. Will never be great kicks but will use the ball short and by hand as they develop. These 2 will hurt sides in 2003. Both have what many athletes lack. The ability to read the play and think ahead of faster opponents. Both put their solid bodies on the line.
In fairness to MarkT I'll give him a very good call he made in the same post when Davis was heavily criticised
Leon Davis – Huge on freakish ability but cannot stay in the game. Must get more consistent. With consistency he will murder teams. Lightning quick and freakish moves and skills. He really is the excitement machine but he needs better batteries.

Telling my mates that Billy Morrison would be the next Jonathan Brown after listening to someone in the media saying it. Probably the worst comparison in the history of the game

I have benn pretty happy with the drafting over the last 4 years they have put us in good stead. The draft that annoys me the most is 1999. W traded DP # 3 for Steve McKee when we could have used it on Matthew Pavlich and we used our # 7 DP on Danny Roach when we could have got Robert Murphy or Joel Corey..... What a joke!

In fairness to Mark, the more calls you make the more you will get wrong.
After McGoughs first two games I was comparing his low centre of gravity and ground level skills to the great Peter Daicos, so he's not on his own.

We aren't alone. Adelaide picked up McCartney as the answer to their CHF problems. Good honest backman but failed time-after-time when Matthews gave him his opportunities at CHF. Any one of us could've told them they were out of their mind wanting him for this role.
From memory, he lasted two years with the Crows and was sacked. Came back to North and played out his career as the journeyman back he always was.

I was a massive wrap for Julian Rowe. I saw him out at Dandenong in 2004 and thought he would be great. He played some decent footy and to be honest, I don't really know what happened to him.

I only post when I have something sensible to say.
And write him off at your peril.
I will try to dig up all my bad calls.
Calling Swan vanilla, prasing Lokan, Rowe and especailly Cole.
I think most bad calls are from players being praised from a young age but as supporters we have to optimistic of the players chances.
I backed lokan and woewodin hardcore, woewie had some reasons to be backed, and the game was just way too fast for him, but lokan was rubbish in the end lol.
Rowe, Iacobucci, McGough, all on my list of false tips also :(
however, heath shaw and wellingham (i hope) were in my good tips

always thought lokan was funny
mainly because he was 21 looking like a 40 year old.

I still to this day think Woewodin's criticism was way over the top. In 2003 he gave our midfield a lot of depth and was a very good component of our midfield. In 2004 (I think) he had a great year and came 2nd in our B+F. All in all he had a good but short Collingwood career.

nope, he was terrible and extremely frustrating for us, and a very weak player. he had a couple of great games but couldnt do it enough. glad we got rid of him
its a shame because it was probably the biggest name to be traded to our club in a while, and it didnt work out. generally the big names dont come to us...

Liked rowe thought he was the was the skilled mid we waited years for. Second season rubbish
Liked matty lokan thought he was a good defensive runner , began to see he couldnt kick poor mark and bade decision maker.
After his first game in the seniors thought richards was a god send:o
Said tuckey was better mark, kick for goal and all round player than tarrant.

Apparntly a big player in showing hine pendlebury, but hey we will only rember when he was head of drafting.
Still has a good eye was just poor when he was in charge
i loved rup betheras, i was quite young at the time but i still remember him being good value. someone correct me if i'm wrong though.
also form day one hated rhyce shaw, still not his biggest fan though

collingwood has drafter good in the last couple of years picking up the big blokes and a mixture of the little. dawes brown reid gem pick ups, pendlebury thomas were a must also good. egan i think is out of favor at the pies and if we got rid of him will be a very good player anywhere else. players like cloke was a 10 year process and hopefully we can pick up a few midfielders that a quick and no how to dispose of the ball.
was it billy morrison everyone was wrapping up to be jonathon brown like lol
tex walker i thought would be a gun after that game where he played on richo , and made richo practically cry.

I really liked the look of Ben Wilson when he first came to Collingwood.
Saw him kick a few in the ressies and he looked the goods but never fired a shot.
