View Full Version : ROUND 9: BRISBANE vs ST.KILDA, GABBA

After a week which sees a certain forward take one small step towards further mediocrity, one giant leap towards a 2nd and permanent retirement, the saints head north to a venue where they have only won 2 from 14 (1991 when Plugger kicked 10, and 2006 in Michael Voss' last game).
Still no Baker for the Saints but Riewoldt returns from his knee injury. Just how effective he is remains to be seen but the good news is that there's no Mal Michael or Chris Scott to go to work on the injured part should it fail again. Lions unsurprisingly unchanged after criusing against Carlton.
Saint defence worries me in terms of matchups and with Riewoldt underdone, much of the work up front will fall to Kosi and Milne which as good as they can be doesn't overly inspire me. Lions to win and to do it easilly.

Pretty confident, should be a good game.

2 hrs till the first bounce ..
Another perfect day in Brisbane, not a cloud in the sky and slight cool winds 23 degrees.
Im pretty confident that if the Lions mids can break even, we should be able to take the four points.
Our defense is definately improving as weeks progress. the inclusions of roe and drummond last week showed good signs ...
Drummond is very important for the lions, his kick in's are always perfect and really sets up our attack.
The lions have probably caught the saints forward line at the worst time... milne (avg 1 goal when travelling), no gehrig, riewoldt underdone?
They'll definately need milne and kosi to step up and kick a bag if they're to get over the line.
The Lions will be just too strong for the saints today. The mids are in form and with Brown starting to fire ... we really should win this at our home ground IMO
Lions by 6 goals (close until half time)

Saints to lead at quarter time by 5 then decide it's an appropriate time to stop trying and get done by 10 goals
It's gone as I predicted so far - both teams have turned up.

It is interesting that we have lined up small inside forward 50 with Clark, Brown and Bradshaw all getting touches up on the wing and Hooper/Corrie the targets inside forward 50.

Both teams are really struggling to stop the run between the respective 50s. A bad mistake in the backline there for the lions leads to a Kosi goal:mad:

Yep, he is pretty much setting up inside 50's with his disposals so they do need to stop his run.

Great tackle from Drummond then, probably not worth a free kick but great to see a guy who is known for playing loose doing the hard stuff. Similarly with the 3 or 4 efforts by TJ then, who hasn't had a good game so far.

This could become a blow out if St Kilda are not careful. If Brisbane had made the most of their opportunities they could've been 50 points ahead.

I don't care if travis plays well or not, as long as he busts a gut trying.

They don't need to be careful they need to take risks. Gram 50/50 point from 40 directly in front. Not looking good Saints. 8.10 58 Lions Saints 3.6 24.

I wouldn't go that far, but the fact when things aren't going his way he isn't going into his shell is a good sign about the guy's footballing character, which used to be knocked week in, week out when when has at Melbourne.

Still find it hard to believe St. Kilda were widely tipped by many, especially on here, to finish not only in the top 4 - but to be the genuine challenger to the Cats.

Brown kicks a goal from a very tough position in the pocket, after Birss misses a relatively easy shot down the other end. Sums up the game for me!

How St.Kilda keep playing hacks like L.Fisher, Fiora and Dempster and drop Armitage is beyond me and i'm sure many others. You can't be serious in winning by playing those players. First step should be to get rid of those passengers for young kids and drop Milne and play Steven.
I feel so sorry for Harvey, the amount of effort he is putting in is absolutely astonishing. If players don't lift when they see him playing like he is, there is something horribly wrong. Harvey, you are absolutely Champion!!

My God, I think Brizzy is improving a lot, but by the same token, St.Kilda really has a dull, unimagantive, and sterile coach in Rosco Lyon ..
Fact is, Cornflakes got a lot more out of this lot, then Lyon, and frankly why St.Kilda actually sacked GT in hindsight will cost them big time ..

Mate, we won't be celebrating for a few years obviously - but we won't be cracking open the champagne bottles when we're 9th...
Jesus Christ Brisbane stop ____ing me over.
Last week i had the Lions over 39.5 and they stopped in the last quarter and only won by 32 after leading by nine goals.
This week i had Lions by over 60, and again they stop in the last quarter.
Oh well at least i also had the Lions over 39.5.

Bingo. At 3/4 time i was hoping Brisbane would go on and pants us, just so nobody could pretend that things weren't that bad. We were terrible and I think all of us are bleeding over it. It's bloody hard to face up to the fact that the premiership that seemed inevitable 3-4 years ago has now slipped away for another 5-10 years.

If St. Kilda didn't win the NAB Cup, I wonder if they would've even got half the hype they did, as 2nd flag favourites and what not pre-round 1. You can make all the excuses you want, but I honestly think it all just boils down to their list being nothing more than mediocre, like Freo's, taking note that mental toughness is something that should be a positive attribute of a quality player.
