View Full Version : Round 10 vs Richmond Tigers
Barlow and Kennelly could be coming back for this game. On paper the Swans SHOULD win this game but Richmond have been in reasonably good form of late so it could be a tough game.
Also only 2 games left without Barry Hall then he will be back bigger and badder than ever :D

Whos going to the game?
Last time we played Richo it was a night time game at the SCG and we did really well against them cant remember the score!
Havnt seen to many games of Richos this year but i hear they are alot better than last year!
Should be a good game!

Are we playing Richmond or Richo... or is that the same thing.
Seriously though, Richmond have lifted there game (and so has Richo) this year. It is more of a running base game though and while it has improved good midfield pressure sees it come back to the fore.
The swans will be expected to win it and rightly so.

Ive watched quite afew of their games and their tackling is ALOT better than in previous years. That put alot more pressure on the opposition than in the past so it will be interesting to see how they go against the Swans.

Worried about this game. I know the boys wouldn't be complacent about versing a side who's on the bottom 4. We should be very wary of the Tigers; they gave a bit to Geelong and Essendon over the past two weeks.

not a popular decision, but Mal is just not right yet.
He made several mistakes against PA, and is very tentative.
if he continues to play in the seniors at 60-70 % he will do more harm than good, not just to the team but to his confidence as well.
Mal out, Barlow in
Bird out, Fosdike in

I agree. Kennelly was in out last year and played while unfit last year. We should try an ensure he is not going to play injured against a middle of the road team. Its not that I want to show disrespect to Richmond who have improved a lot but we should be able to cover him against the tigers.

it's great he's back, but he was very tentative yesterday, seems to not be at all confident, and yes, maybe rest him and bring in the cheese
not sure i'd cut bird yet, not sure if fossie's going well enough, but maybe giving bird a break from seniors would be good at some point
he's still done really well so far though

Fossie got smashed late in the second quarter, hobbled off. They put his left knee on ice and he took no further part. When asked he simply said "it's no good", but also that he didn't know what the problem was. I take that as some hope, because if it was an ACL, one would imagine that he would know.

Good luck this week guys,
You're up against the #1 contested team in the comp so for us to win we'll have to beat you at your own game.
I think our skills aren't good enough to get us over the line, but my surprise tip for near BOG is Graham Polak, especially on the smaller SCG.

Yeah it's interesting. A lot of opposition supporters seem to think the Swans prefer it it under lights and on small grounds. But I've always thought we play far better football in non-greasy conditions and with a bit of room to move. We can close with the best of them, and in recent years perhaps have been the most consistent team in this area, but our run and carry of halfback requires a lot of one-touch footy which seems to be harder in the dewy conditions under lights.

The last tigers game I went to, cant remember the year, it was a wet Sunday arvo. We went in as unbackable favourites, led narrowly all day only for Brown to kick a great goal that put the tigers in front right at the death. Richo was brilliant for a big bloke in wet conditions. Bolton had his colours lowered that day.
This year's tigers are a much better team than that one. It will take an effort similar to last weeks to subdue them.
I like LRT on Richo. Bevan on Brown. Jack on Foley (big job - Foley is a star).
Bolton C on Deledio maybe?
If they put Jake King on Moore, and I suspect they might, they should isolate him in the goal square and go long. Moore will kill him in the air.

From what ive read he is a 50/50 to play. Im actually kind of hoping he doesnt play as last season we brought him back too soon and he was plagued with injuries for the rest of the season. I want Kennelly to be 100% fit before the Swans medical staff let him play.

Shoosh! That's our 19th man strategy... should be able to pick up Lids hiding from the action from there!;)
Seriously this is a super worry game... so many times crucial "should-win games" especially after hard fought slogs , put a unnecessary dent into the season.

Hmmm how many kilometers does Goodes cover though? Because Richo has been up around the 16 mark and then still goes back to Full-Forward and is devastating there.
I doubt Goodes and Richo will be on each other very long. I watched FoxSports News yesterday and Paul Roos says he might put Goodes on Richo but it probably wouldnt last very long because if he did Terry Wallace would just instruct Richo to play more forward and Paul Roos isnt willing to have Goodes play most of the game in the backline.

Really enjoying this thread.
Must say what articulate, civilised folk you Sydney fans are, that we Tigers (or any opponent) can be included in the discussion without anyone getting feral and abusive, or possessive of their board, as so often happens on BF! You are happy to compliment rather than slur opposition players, too, which is the sign of a true footy fan rather than just a one-eyed fanatic. Confirms the Swans as one of my (next) favourite teams.

wallace is saying today that richo has been playing with painkilling injections because of his knee injury
he says there's no doubt about richo playing, but surely it would be a massive risk playing him against a running athlete such as goodes
although the scg will probly help richo
he'd have bad memories of the scg, though, he did his knee (i think) in a game there in the late 90s, i think he either hit the fence or did his knee trying to avoid it

Its actually funny you say that.
Last year, we only lost one day game out of ten. This was against eventual premiers Geelong (without Hall and Kennelly).
In contrast, we only won 3 out of 13 games at night.
As for the pleasant discussion here. People don't realise that the core of the Swans followers are often pretty knowledgable about footy, since we are staved of information us here, we seek it out.
We also respect other teams. I guess the ethos of the club itself has rubbed off on the supporters.

Moore. Beat him last year or 2 years ago
Really looking forward to this game. I came down to see the Tigers match last year, and they went with us until very late in that game through good pressure work. I think the tackling and forward pressure is something the Tigers have struggled to build up - but it's always been a bedrock of Wallace sides. Perhaps they were coming off a low base, as it's taken a while. But watching them this year, I'm seeing glimmerings of a fine working man's team on the up.
Anyone thinking this will be a cakewalk are getting ahead of themselves. Especially with Richo in such fine form (I hope his injury doesn't hold him back too much, we've so rearely seen Richo play to his potential in Sydney).
Also, I'll send a cheerio to the Tiger's grog squad. They're rough diamonds, but probably the best travelling fans we've had in Sydney in the last few years. The way they supported their team with positive chants in the face of appalling onfield performances recently has been a credit to the team.
Syd by 5 goals in a mostly tight affair if it's dry.

Bolton knows how to play Richo, even when the big fella's in prime form, and must be Sydney's first choice when he goes forward.
I think he may start off with Teddy on him, and then if it proves to be too much, Bolts. I'd love to see LRT have a go, and hopefully bounce back into some form that way.

If LRT doesn't get Richo, who is he gonna play on? Richmond dont have any other big forwards that I can see. I might have dropped him for this game, given their small forward line and Richo's mobility.
On another topic, would anyone else like to see Bolton C play as a key forward? He takes a strong grab, looks quick on the lead, is a handy crumber and can kick em from beyond 50 with style. Sure, he holds the defence together at the moment but if our back 6 was Kennelly, Eski, Mattner, Leo, Richards and LRT they would do alright against most teams wouldn't they?
Meanwhile Bolton slots in with Rhino, Micky, JMoore, Amon and Henry providing a third tall yet small matchup dilemna for the opposition. Throw Festival Hall and an in form Tricky Nick up there and you've got a tough front 6 to contain.

B2 should play on Richo, goodes should play his normal role and let Wallace worry about him.
K Moore on O'Keefe
Thurstfield on O'Loughlin
King on J Moore
Id like to see that contest :thumbsu:

If King plays on Moore we will just need to clear out the forward line and have a one on one contest.Moore will kill him in the air and is too smart and strong for him if the ball hits the deck.
I like King as a determined, hard running backman but I think he does have some defensive deficienies.

Moore will beat King in the air but he will have a hard time chasing him around the ground when King runs off him. Hopefully we won't allow you to catch us out 1v1.

I was just about to point out the same thing myself. I reckon King will definately do Moore for pace.
Read an article today where Leo is quoted being "excited" at the prospect of Goodes matching up on Richardson this weekend. If true, it will certainly be a clash worth the price of admission. :thumbsu:

Could be one of the contests of the season if they do however Richo will only play on the wing for half the match so who will pick him up when he go's forward?

Moore is deceptively quick over short distances. See how he ran away from the Port players to kick that 3rd goal last week.

every time i think of c bolton as a forward (which isn't often) i remember him running into an open goal v geelong in 05 semi, when every other player had stopped and he played on and missed from 20m in front
i thought that was about our last chance to start a comeback in that game and i shudder at the memory

Very disappointed in that decision. I thought Schmidty was better than Bird last week and showed great poise to kick the goal that put us ahead

bird hasn't done much wrong
i like schmidt, but i think every game bird plays is a valuable lesson for a bloke who will one day captain the club

Would you really play someone on richo to get them in form, you make him sound like a dud rather than one of the brownlow favourites

Bird has been ok, but i still think he seems to 'rush' his possessions when he has a bit more time to assess his options. Also seems to get caught holding the ball, but has been alright otherwise. Like J-Swan, would have liked to have seen Schmidt in the team, i thought he was due for a big year to be honest.

No ...
Just saying, he has done very well against Richo pretty recently, so if he's up to it again, he might run himself into some form.

Jack Reiwoldt is reasonably tall. That matchup would make sense to me.

i want schmodt in too, i don;t think kennelly should be back this week
i just don;t hold to the theory that because he's young, bird needs a "rest"
yes, bird still needs to more composed, but that will come with more senior game time
it's a good sign of our depth that the likes of schmidt, barlow, white, laidlaw and smith, among others, are awaiting a chance for a senior recall, having had a taste in the past 12 months or so
