Hey all, been thinking of doing this for a while (since I saw it on the Bulldogs board ages ago, to be honest) and I've finally got around to it.

The project: Find out who was the best player ever to wear each number for the Eagles since 1987 according to you, the fans.

There'll be some foregone conclusions, some battles between star players, and some numbers that have never been worn by anyone you might remember.

I've compiled a list of who wore what number since 1987 from resources available online and my own memory. Some of it might be wrong (I was 6 in 1987 so I'm a little hazy, and the online resources aren't 100% accurate) but I'll get it as close as I can. If I make any errors please point them out. (Mods, if you think this should be in the Nest feel free to move it there)

The rules: Players must have played a game in the number to be in the poll.
Where players have worn different numbers throughout their careers, try to judge an individual poll on how they performed in that number.
I'll make the polls public so if opposition trolls vote David Antonowicz the best #4 we'll know who they are.

So here goes with #1.
Notes:
Don Pyke wore #10 in 112 games from 1991 to 1996.
Brett Heady wore #39 in 20 games in 1990.
Michael Gardiner wore #19 in 57 games from 1997 to 2000.

Yes, I expect this will be one of the foregone conclusions.

3 and 4 will be the most interesting. Mainwaring v Judd, Sumich v Kerr.

I have a lot of thinking to do about who to pick for 44, when we get there.

By the time I get to 44 there may be another youngster challenging!

Bloody hell, that'd be good. He'd have to be a deadset champion.

Oh, and 27 is a lock as well.

But I shouldn't get ahead of you, should I.

Heady. Followed by Gardiner.

Pyke definitely remembered for his time as 10, Mitch Brown too young. Wally was serviceable but didn't play that much.

Heady easily, though if Gardiner had more years like 2004, he would be pushing him. That was one brilliant year!!

Gardy at his best by the length of the flemington.
And the thread title says "Best #1", so Gardiner.
