Suprisingly, after I purchased an LG flatscreen tv, I noticed that my Foxtel reception is a little blurry not so sharp reception whereas the fta stuff is absolut perfection and I mean that, its as clear as if people on tv were sitting in my lounge, I rang Foxtel and they conceded that there is nothing they can do, apart from selling me some other product, paradoxically the old tv which is at least 15 years old delivered a perfect foxtel picture and a very ordinary fta picture. Any suggestions?

No suggestions here but I have the exact opposite problem.

Moved to a new place and got a new Foxtel IQ box and now everything seems out of alignment.

My last IQ box was perfect. Its mind-boggling.

Jozeph it's because you are looking at digital tv signals through your LCD on FTA whereas the old tv was analog. So that's why the new tv is a considerable improvement. Unfortunately Foxtel's digital signal is a pretty ordinary sub standard definition. The old TV was probably more forgiving. It's a bit like playing a VHS through an old tube TV compared with VHS on LCD. When Foxtel goes HD in a few months and you upgrade your box, the image should hopefully be the equivalent of what you're seeing on FTA.

There are a few HD channels now Pharro.. but they ask you to upgrade to view them. Is this what you're talking about? We got a new TV a few months ago and for sports the viewing quality is pretty bad.

They're talking up HD on Foxtel but you can't get it yet. I think September is the launch.

So essentially I had the same problem. So if you are on the Basic + Sports package, and you only want to see Sport in HD, your plan goes from 55$ a month to 75$ a month + $200 you have to pay upfront for the IQ service.

Thanks for the replies, the difference in quality from the game on Ten and the one on fox was canyonlike, I might just bug the hell out of foxtel/austar until they fix it.

I am not sure that Foxtel will quickly match TEN as they are the only ones broadcasting HD AFL. Seven's HD is really only slightly improved standard definition.

Might have to do that, thanks. I've been putting off IQ until HD became available.

Foxtel SD is pretty good for me. I think the problem is the cable you are using to connect Foxtel box to your new TV. What sort of connection are you using?

Say what? Those pr1cks! I was all over 'em to have the new HD IQ2 box the second it was available and they haven't returned any of my calls. I'm getting onto this today then.

Jozeph, I'd hound them if I was in your boat too dude. Is it Austar for you, out there amongst the grapes mate? THAT may be where the problem lies if it is. Just guessing!

After all the kerfuffle of getting an early install bought this HDMI auto splitter box so I could run the Xbox and Foxtel HD without switching cables and now the HDMI input is stuffed!

Serves me right for getting cheap Hong Kong crap.

Jozeph,

Go buy yourself a top notch set of component cables to go into the Foxtel box. You are probably using just the normal AV cables that come when its installed. Just ask for a high quality component cable with the scart plug for the foxtel box. When I first connected my Foxtel to an LCD TV it was nearly unwatchable, but by replacing the AV cables with high quality component cables my picture is 1000 time better.

Yeah thanks for the info, when I first rang foxtel, the tech guy suggested this, and said it was the problem, but I am with Austar and he suggested ringing them, so I did and suggested the cables thing and their tech guy said no it won't change anything.
Will give it a whirl.

Jozeph, Roosurgence is 100% right on this and I should have suggested it first. I did exactly this ages ago and the difference is substantial. The cables aren't cheap. Do you have a Dick Smith store near you? They actually have cables with Foxtel branding on the packaging to make selection easy.

As for the Austar tech advising you otherwise, these Foxtel/Austar techs are largely trained monkeys who know how to do a basic instal but otherwise have no real understanding of the technology.

I'll also back up this info jozeph (can't believe I forgot either). I didn't have any problem with mine, from the start, but always knew that I'd improve the cabling as my tv purchases improved, up to today's full bells and whistles number. The reason for that is outlined above. The improvements are significant, and that includes sound improvements, if you're running a full 5.1 or better AMP, and surround sound speaker setup. In fact, the sound will improve anyway, with your new tv speakers.

Pharro's also right on the Austar tech front. Some know a lot, but many are just blokes off the street who've been trained on installs.

If all that doesn't work.....FIIK!
