Having this kind of season tends to mess with my footy compass. By that I mean, I usually know which teams I like and which ones I hate. Usually, I want teams to win or lose based on which is advantageous for Freo to finish higher on the ladder. Most years, I would like nothing more than seeing the Weagles get pansted like they did yesterday. But I spent the first 1.5 quarters wondering if they could make a game of it, knowing that if they finish above us we will get a higher draft pick, possibly Daniel Rich. It was only when it became clear that they would lose that I switched over to 'laughing at Weagles' mode.
See what I mean? This season screws around with everything?
I hoped Essendon would get over the line against Adelaide, even though I usually prefer Adelaide.
And what about Freo's game today? In tanking theory, there's no point winning this game. Season is shot already etc. So, if we start losing, I won't be as annoyed as I would be in a winning season. But here's the main point, which I've come to in a roundabout way. I can't hope we lose, ever. If it comes to that, I'd rather not go to the footy. I haven't seen this mob win since August last year. So let's have a win today Freo, eh? And wouldn't we be better off developing a winning culture in the second half of the season and finishing 9th or 10th? Well, which is better?
Sometimes the most 'useless' wins are the most special. Like round 22 2001, my first Freo game live. Did that achieve anything? No. Did Ben Cunningham run wild in the last quarter? He did. Or round 21 2005, JLo's kick after the siren, which I see ranks up there as most people's favourite Freo moment. Did we make the finals in 2005? No we didn't. In fact, JLo's kick probably netted us a lower draft pick. :o But of course it was a magic night.
So don't talk to me about tanking, even though I understand the potential benefits. Let's not turn into Carlton. This is Freo, where every win has the possibility of being special. See you at the game today. I'll be the dude in the Freo tee-shirt, cheering myself hoarse at the back of 317. :D
