Funny story (well, it is to me) - my daughter, almost 3, has been brought up to love the Hawks. In the 2006 yearbook, she spotted a photo of Grant Birchall exhaling a breath as he disposed of the footy - it reminded her of a duck and so made a big impression on her. But Chance Bateman has made the running of late, thanks mainly to his memorable hair style.

As I walked back from the museum yesterday carrying her, I asked her who was her favourite player (I was wearing my Hawks baseball cap and she was playing with it). "Chance Bateman," she said, very seriously. "What about Grant Birchall?" "Yes, yes," she said. I asked again who was her favourite player. "Grant Birchall," she said. Cheekily, I said, "What about Chance Bateman?" "Oh, yes, yes." So I asked for a third time, "who is your favourite player?"
