View Full Version : Hodgey's absence

I consider Hodgey our most valuable player for all the reasons we know and love. He may be back from his hammy this week; if not then most likely the week after.

I would hope and expect the Hawks to beat the Bombers this Saturday with or without Hodgey.

My point is this: to have had Hodgey for a month or more to a hammy and only lost one game during this time is an exceptional result. Yes we will have played a couple of lowly sides, but it's worked out very well for us because we're going to need him in for bigger games beyond Essendon.

Note: I'm not trying to get too far ahead of myself re this week's game and don't want to take the result for granted but you'd hope being a top of the ladder side, we would hit back hard.

He is my favourite player outside the Brisbane Lions along with Luke Ball.

you dont know how much we need need until we lose him :(

Bring on the bomber's give hodge another week rest dont rush him into the side. i would rather lose a match then lose hodge for a further 4-5 weeks cause we couldn't hold out for one more game.

Hodge is deadly. Usually requires a tag so it free's everyone else. I think everyone is also underrating Crawfs input when fit too. A fit Crawf is usually not as close checked as Hodge, Mitch, Sewell and plays the outside runners role beautifully.

Still though, we need Hodgey back badly. I dont care if he is rested against Essendon to ensure he is back the following week. I hope we get a good fringe player like Tuck back in that case to get some hardness back.

Cant see Tuck coming straight back in after 4+ weeks off.
If he does then he is rated very highly.

.

I lost count of the times Lukey Boy flashed before my eyes in watching Saturday's game.

Hugely missed. So was Crawf, Guerra and Dewie .... all so badly!

I'm one of those 'out of sight out of mind' people.

I've actually forgotten the impact Hodgey can have.

I look forward to being reminded this weekend :thumbsu:

in my eyes he is our captain, not to say mitchell isnt a great leader but hodge is the go to man and the one who leads the way to the war......

What is everybody's obsession with Luke being captain... I am sure he would be a good captain. But Sammy is just as important to our team as Hodge. Mitchell was knocked out against Port Adelaide... we were 38 points down... he came back on in the 2nd quarter inspired the team and ended up with 28 possessions.

His absence is being felt. I never realised how much of a key player he is until now. He makes a huge difference in our midfield and defence. He is welcomed back if he plays this weekend. Go the Hawks!

If he is 90% fit, stick him in the back line against Essendon and let him use his foot skills to spot players while we wait for the likes of Dew and Guerra to regain fitness.

Have to say that I'm coming round to Sam as captain.
Love the bloke, great attitude and his efforts of the last two weeks (Port knockout and dropping out of the Brownlow) really sell it for me.

I guess the difference is that on-field, Mitchell appears to be more about his game than everyone elses whereas I've seen Hodgey in directing play more times than I can count. It may be that Sam does the same, but I just don't see it.

It gives me goosebumps when there's a bit of argy bargy and Hodge is in there pulling guys out and pushing opposition players back out of the fray. Hodge is a tough nut, and I can count a few times when it looked like it was on, Hodge comes running in, turns his back on the opposition team and starts pushing his own players out. In doing so, he sets the standard AND shows his courage in turning his back on an opposition that can take a cheap shot.

Also, no matter where he plays (forward, back or in the middle) there's no doubt who's in charge.

To my mind, on the field, Hodge is the more natural leader but from what I hear it appears as though Mitchell is pretty damn good off it so that's probably the reason he edged out Hodgey.

Oh, PLEASE DEAR GOD COME BACK HODGEY THIS WEEK! My wife is having a baby soon, so if I can get some stem cells I'll send them to Hodgey to jam into his hamstring.

Call me silly, but I am anticipating Tuck's return just as much. Not that he will have the same influence, but I thought he performed really well before he got injured ... and oh to have B Muston back ...

We really need him back defenetly by the Adelaide game. I actually never realised how important Hodgey is, ofcourse I have always thought he is a star but I have realised just how important he is during his absence. Hope to see him back this weekend!

Massively underrated by anyone who doesn't follow Hawthorn.

Mitch is our capyain, but on field LK is The General. Have you noticed that Young's game has gone downhill since Hodge has been out, and the other mids have been carrying injuries.
