View Full Version : Buddy's developing place on the All-Time Ladder

Hey fellow Hawks, as someone who has spent most working days reading these boards but rarely posting, you may not know me (my first thread);
Anyway, as someone who enjoys the little things about our game and most importantly, the feats of Hawthorn players, I was toying with a (somewhat trivial) idea. I thought I would post, week-by-week, Buudy's place on the Alltime VFL/AFL Goalkicking list, so we can see him overtake our favourite/hated/current players and see the unfolding of what place in history he takes.
For example, this week:
Buddy moved to # 408 on the All-Time List with 175 goals
This week he overtook:
409 174 Alves, S.266 1965 Melbourne/Nth Melb
410 174 Bruns, N.223 1978 Geelong
411 174 Richardson, M.156 1983 Collingwood/Essendon/Bris Bears
412 174 Bayes, M.246 1985 Sydney
413 174 Gleeson, A. 176 1986 Carlton
414 174 Hall, T. 114 1988 Hawthorn/Adelaide
415 174 Lappin, N.* 279 1994 Bris Lions/Bris Bears
416 173 Mensch, D. 158 1992 Geelong
417 172 Bairstow, M. 146 1987 Geelong
418 172 Campbell, W. 297 1991 Richmond
419 172 Johnson, C. 264 1994 Bris Lions/Fitzroy
420 171 Cooper, R. 159 1932 Carlton/Nth Melb
421 171 Ross, J. 139 1946 St Kilda
422 171 Branton, R. 170 1953 Richmond
423 171 McGowan, B. 118 1955 Sth Melb
424 171 Elshaug, T. 137 1979 Melbourne/Essendon/Collingwood
425 171 Buhagiar, T. 108 1981 Essendon/Footscray
426 171 Heatley, J. 63 1995 West Coast/St Kilda
427 170 Harvey, M. 206 1984 Essendon
428 170 Broderick, P. 262 1988 Fitzroy/Richmond
429 170 Edwards, T.* 276 1995 Adelaide
430 170 Mooney, C.* 153 1999 Geelong/Kangaroos
Is this a something you guys are interested in? I can do it anyway you like, say 3 players above and below? only when he ovetakes current players? Hawks? Big names? etc.
If this is boring, that's fine too!

FWIW (sneak preview),
next current players to be left in his wake;
# 396 S.Johnson 178 goals
# 394 B.Holland (Mel) 178
# 388 P.Chapman 180
# 373 C.Jones 184

Thanks very much for the appraisals guys!
I'll do it week by week, listing who he has overtaken.
Figure it will be more fun to see which names come up and how many places he moves once it happens, rather than watching him eventually catch up to someone.
If you have better suggestions (please be specific) then post 'em up!
Great idea. :thumbsu:

Was after them for a while, then found them in the nether regions of allthestats.com (records section)- this is a pretty comprehensive site for those of us that are footy obssessed.

Interested to see Bob Merrick (3 goals less from 8 games less) and Harry Davie (2 goals more from 9 games less) in the lower-scoring eras of the 1910's and 20's. Those guys must've been good!

certainly got good stats, hard to say how the game was being played back then though, 59 games is a very short career considering the goals being kicked, must've done a knee or something which would've been career-ending at that time.

i spose roughy is still too deep in the pack to worry about how many people he is overtaking but can we show him some love and keep his position up to date each week too? :thumbsu:
Does this have stats like fastest time to reach a set number of goals?
IE. When he reaches 200 goals will he have done it in less games than lloyd, dunstall, hudson, coleman, plugga etc?
that would be interesting

He was borderline great Sumich and his name often gets lost in discussions surrounding the great forwards of his era.

I can't believe he's about to pass Q Lynch. Buddy has 67 games (182 goals) to Lynch's 117 and 186 goals.
Here's some more silly stats.
At this rate, Buddy will have 319 goals by 117 games. And that’s assuming he will only travel at his career avg of 2.74 goals per game between now and then. If he continued his current 08 avg of 5.36, he would have 450 goals at the 117 game mark.
That would make him in 57th spot for the most goals ever at the age of 23. Only 14 goals behind Dermie.
Buddy should join the 200 club by round 16.
Now that would be an amazing effort considering Hudson had about 498 goals after 117 games:eek:.
The only difference is that Huddo has done it. Buddy has yet to do it.

Buddy's ave goals per season;
2005 - 1.1 per game
2006 - 2.2 per game
2007 - 3.3 per game
2008 - 5.3 per game.
While their is no doubt that the current rules favor the forward and we should all recognise that Buddy still has plenty of room for improvement, it's a wonderful start.
But looking at that stat for Suma earlier, it pays to keep a lid on things and deal with what we know and what is done - not what might or should happen.

This is an excellent thread. Well done to the dude doing it. I will be constantly vistiting this over the years (hopefully)
I may be an opposition supporter, but Im not one of these idiots who enjoy hanging shit on Buddy, I know hes going to be a champion of the game, and enjoy watching him at all times
It will be enjoyable watching him overtake the games greats over the years
Once again cheers and well done :thumbsu:

Cheers. Yeah, few realise how well Jacko's record reads on paper. Everyone remembers the antics and constant club changes though.
Interesting too that the only players on that list younger than Franklin were Lee, Lloyd, Lockett, Longmire and Des Fothergill (who was barely 20, and three games shy of winning the Brownlow along with his third Copeland Trophy). Gordon Coventry was nearly 24 and had 'only' 162 goals at the same stage; plenty of time for Buddy yet.

It's scary how far in front of the rest Coleman and Hudson are though... the two of them are so far clear of 3rd it's just not funny.
Buddy's great to watch, but as a pure goal kicker has a long way to go.
The other thing that's nice to notice is longevity... Dunstall, Ablett and Lockett do OK in this, but not outstanding. But where is Matthews?
Finally, the one player closest to Franklin is ahead of him on this. I think a lot of us have forgotten how good Richo was when he hit the scene. I just hope Franklin can address his flaws better and kick on further.
Thanks for the good read though Ron.

Thats the link - its done 20 at a time
Looking at the list he is on track to be around #250 by the end of this year (234 goals or 43 more for the season).
And for the poster asking about Roughie - he has now moved into position 820 level with Scott West on 104 goals. His 6 goals on the weekend took him past such current luminaries as David Hille, Jarrad Waite and Josh Carr

Also Crawf 221 and Platten 228 by seasons end. If he really gets his kicking boots on, he can overtake Nick Holland 239. By season end next year, he should pass the great Buckenara 293 and Tucky on 320.

I came across this stat the other day when having a look at Bucky - I have this fanciful notion that Xavier Ellis reminds me of him in the way he moves - but I digress, Bucky actually kicked 60 goals for the Hawks in his first season.
How many non KPP's before and since (LM aside) or specifically half forward flankers have had that much influence on the field and the scoreboard?

Buckenara was my favourite player in the 80s.
A brilliant forward but a better centerman.
As good as D Jarman.

I notice Darren Bennett just below him. Is that Bennett that's been punting over in the NFL? If so, what happened that meant he only played 78 games, despite a good goal per game ratio?

I am pretty sure he was in his mid 20's by time he made it to Melbourne hence the short career and move to the NFL. Have fond memories of him kicking bag after bag playing for East Freo..

I'm not sure where to put this but I cant make a new thread so i will put it here.
In the paper today over here in perth they were warning against players running out onto the ground if franklin kicks his 100th goal at subi. i think we play them in round 21. i would love to run onto the ground but im not sure how seriously the afl are taking this, they really seem to want to stamp it out. I think its a great tradition but i wouldnt want any of our players to get hurt from a rampaging crowd. Thoughts?
Buddy will get his 10 this week. The 10 and the 100 in the same game. It will be a magical afternoon.

The question is - why is Buddy still behind him?
Surely if you have the same number of goals in fewer matches you should be ahead?
