A FOOTBALL coach being upset with a story is part and parcel of the territory.
He has every right to disagree vigorously and defend his club, team, players and decisions.

But no journalist really enjoys getting chewed out in front of their peers in a public forum, and it is certainly not the norm among AFL coaches.

When Alastair Clarkson turned to me after Hawthorn's press conference, my first reaction was: "Is he talking to me?"

The piece in that day's Hobart Mercury and the Herald Sun was what I thought was a stock-standard football preview.

Hawthorn midfielder Jordan Lewis had missed the previous game with a corked thigh, so his fitness was to be closely watched, especially with the Hawks taking on the fast-running Bulldogs without Luke Hodge, Shane Crawford, Brent Guerra, Ben McGlynn and Stuart Dew.

When Lewis failed to participate in any drills after the first five minutes and fellow key onballer Brad Sewell left the track early - all under the eyes of the Dogs' assistant coaches in the stands - the story seemed obvious.

But somehow this seemed to rub Clarkson up the wrong way.

His response, however, took me completely by surprise as I tried to fathom what had made him so upset.

He demanded an apology for reporting that Lewis and Sewell were in doubt, as both played.

It would not have been the first time Clarkson or a Hawks staff member had assured the Tasmanian media a player was fine to go, only to be a non-starter.

Last season, before the Kangaroos defeated the Hawks in Launceston, Lance Franklin failed to participate in the previous night's light run.

An inquiry to the club received a response that it was a non-compulsory session and Franklin had chosen not to attend, the only player to do so.

Turns out he wasn't even in the state because of a virus.

And this was just one example of Hawthorn's attitude to the press.

Most clubs tell "half-truths" in relation to their players' health and fitness, but to then turn around and blast someone when these assertions are queried is a bit like the boy who cried wolf.

Yes, it was an angry, emotive spray with more than the occasional swear word, but it was nothing not heard before.

Was it a personal barrage because only the Mercury has pushed for Tasmania's own AFL team, or given balanced coverage of the more than $3 million a year deal with the Tasmanian Government?

Or was it some other issue?

I have no idea, and only Clarkson can answer that.

But while I initially felt embarrassed and slightly belittled, it is not something I will hold against the coach, and he will probably not be the last one to take exception to one of my stories.

Unlike idiots like Barrett and Baum, this bloke took the high ground.

Respect to him.

Fair enough though, Clarkson ambushed him and all over some stupid insignificant story in the paper. He's a writer probably not too quick on the reply.

I would like to see how you would have reacted.

Ambushed him
He asked if he was going to apologies for the article HE WROTE the day before

In response to his question I would have said something like:
"Very often players will miss the last training session before a match and still play, I just didnt believe you on this occasion because you didnt tell me the truth last time"

If the training session was in full view of Bulldogs assistants, why has Clarko pissed off with this...

I heard today we issued an apology? Is that the case?

I love the way AC goes about his business but i was a little surprised as well by the spray.

Storm in a tea cup, some times I wonder how the likes of Haffey treated members of the press.

I believe its because of the way Stubbs wrote the article:

LIKE a secret agent in a paperback novel, Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson thrives on cloak and dagger secrecy.
Asked if Jordan Lewis was fully fit to return from a thigh injury for today's blockbuster against the Western Bulldogs at Aurora Stadium, Clarkson barked back: "Well we picked him."

yeah i didnt read the article... that explains it a bit more..

edit: i dont think it was a spray he gave, more of a slight verbal nudge.

Yeah, what i'm trying to say is that some people aren't used to responding off the cuff. Maybe ambush was bad choice but he definitely wan't expecting it, offguard would have been better. I'm not saying Clarkson shouldn't have done it then but if Stubb's only response was "dunno" then you have to respect that he may not be a confrontational kind of person.

I think that Clarko shouldn't be taking it personally and take the higher ground. Even without the fact that pulling players had happened before.

It's part of being a coach. You are scrutinised constantly and the pressure will be on all the time you can't let it get to you. It will come from everywhere, supporters, media and even internally but you gotta know how to handle it.

To be fair to Stubbs the footage I saw has him responding saying "well they didn't train" to which Clarko fires back with "how many f'n players don't train but then end up playing" to which Stubbs responded with "I don't know".

I think it's fair to say Clarko over reacted here and that Stubbs was taken off-guard. Not a big deal though.

Stubbs deserves some credit for not over-reacting, as Baum did. That little weasel-worded remark at the end insinuating that Clarkson was only annoyed because Stubbs had campaigned against the Tassie government deal lost him some points, though. He almost had me on his side before that.

That journo doesnt know the difference between Journalism and debating. He is having some dort of debate with Clarkson through a newspaper! Thats ridiculous! He is a tool.
