View Full Version : Otten and Cook at South Adelaide
Given the continuous turmoil and utter shambles at South Adelaide, I'm wondering if the Crows have the right to remove these guys from their current SANFL club and play them elsewhere?
I don't know about you guys but I hardly think the culture down there is where we want our interstate recruits spending their time! If anything was going to encourage them to want to go home playing at a club in complete disarray could do it.
What do we think? Is it possible? Is it something the crows should seriously think about?
I think Otten in particular is too important to be screwed up by the idiots at that club!

Doubt they would have they power to remove them.
Defeats the purpose of the minidraft.
Im guessing at years end they could suggest that they move clubs but not during the current season.
I remember a little while back people were suggesting that we move sellar down there so he can be a key target up forward.
I say send them all to centrals !!!! :p

Port Power seem to shift players at a whim (Surjan and Willits are two that spring to mind), so we can too.
Get them the hell away from South. That club is a disgrace.
The Crows CAN have players moved from one SANFL club to another. Jericho did a mid-season move from West Adelaide to Norwood a couple of years ago. Such moves need to be done before the transfer cut-off date, which is rapidly approaching (early June from memory - it was bandied about earlier this year when the club was still planning on having Dangermouse play for West Adelaide whenever possible).
Whether or not they would choose to, based purely upon the internal disruptions going on at the club, is entirely another matter.
Crows players spend most of their time training at West Lakes anyway. As far as I know, they only train with their SANFL teammates on Friday nights and game days. You wouldn't think that this would be too detrimental to their development.
Otten seems to be thriving at South Adelaide anyway. Cook has barely made it onto the field, having suffered a series of injuries (mostly hamstrings) this year. Seems to me that neither of them have suffered overly greatly.
It might not be a major issue, but I'd feel better if they were at a stable club.
Imagine these poor buggers showing up on Friday then to ask, "so who is our coach this week?"
What about the quality of coaching they will actually get? Do we tell them to ignore what they hear at South and just do the things we have been asking of them?
June 30th is the cut off date.
the crows moved Tom Gilligan in the past from north to port or vice versa i cant quite remember, Ian Perrie moved from South to North and as mentioned Jericho moved from West to Norwood.

I wonder what Clay Sampson is going to be like as a coach. i'd say that is the most important part.

As a South man, this pains me to say it but . . . YES, move them to another SANFL Club.
A fish always stinks at the head first eh guys???;)
Get rid of the President and throw the bloody Board out.
I am sick and tired of the bullshyte. This has been going on for far too long.

Im a Souths supporter and it worries me. More so for Cook than Otten. Otten is the go to man in the league and gets plenty of oppurtunities he may not get at a better club. Cook plays half forward in quite possibly the crappiest ressies team I can remember. I know he has been injured but the games I saw him play he looked lost and I cant blame him. He must unforunately be a big chance to be the second delisted first year draftee in Crows history.

I really hope not about cook.
I like what he can bring to the side.
Exciting talent. Need to nurture him. Dont want him to become the forgotten player for to long.
In light of vaders post, i would have him removed from south. As you say freddy, Otten is the go to man in the league and is doing excellent things. His spot is secure in the panthers 21 and his development is coming along well. He will become a best 22 player next year for us the way he is motoring atm. Has a good argument as to why he is not in the crows line up ATM.
I know it sounds like im want him for my own SANFL club but from a few mates of mine floating between 19's and reserves at centrals, tell me do a very good job laird and co of handling young talent.
Whoa!
1. Otten seems to be getting plenty of game time and plenty of the ball.
2. He might be happy there - no poster seems to have any inside info on this.
3. The move from one club to another is usually initiated IIRC when the player is not being given enough game time in the league side or possibly played out of position.
4. Playing with South didn't seem to hurt Alwyn Davey.

Do you have any information on what is going on with the President (the Comedian, right?), and at board level? The problem is, when the people with the authority to make change are the people that are the problem, who forces change?
It was pretty obvious something was going wrong with South after the Pyman debacle (who is a legend), and now Cahill?

I really do not see how the dilemmas behind the scenes would have a big effect on two young and most importantly part time players. Their main focus and mentor would be Neil Craig and his team, with their SANFL team coming second.
Secondly who do you send them to? Perhaps that move in itself may do more damage than playing with South [which seems to be doing them no harm at the moment!] There have been calls all over the place for Sellar to leave Glenelg, again to go where? In an ideal world we would have a Crow's reserve side where they could develop together however until that day arrives we need to use the system we have and have faith that it is working, remember Mckay played for South last year and Tippet for West [admittedly missing many games due to injury] but both of these lowly teams have produced a very large number of past and present AFL players.

Mackay played 2 games for south, but I do take your point, our blokes out at south do tend to go well, and hey, they get to learn how the other half lives and will be even prouder to be a part of the adelaide footy club. Perhaps its just a bit of character building.:D

I wouldn't move them, but obviously it'd be preferrable if they were at a club with a strong, settled structure and culture.
But as you said, they spend most of their time at the Crows, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

Andy Ottens gets on well with the lads at Sth. Their a good fun bunch of young lads. Remember that when youre bagging South Adelaide its NOT the players that have been or are the problem......and that is who Andy is playing and mixing with......not the board members.

I think that Cook up to the age of 13 lived down south and played with South's juniors (although i may be wrong about that)
I would be extremely surprised and disappointed if Cook was delisted after one year - he has had an injury riddled year so far, we had rated him at no 19 in the draft, he got good raps as an U18, he has the traits we are seeking (speed, run, inside player etc), ok the couple of games with south's reserves have not been the best but as a south supporter i must say that our reserves side would possibly rank as one of the worst ever and for Cook to be stuck on a half forward flank in that situation does not help his cause. However, as his fitness improves i'm sure that he would move into the midfield/wing positions where i believe he is more suited as i understand that he likes to run and bounce and carry the ball.
In any case, I think his attitude and performance on the training track at the AFC in front of Craig would have more influence as to where he stands with Craig.

The upside is, that at South Adelaide, Otten really has to work and earn his touches. And he is getting out and finding the ball very nicely. He's happy there, playing well and earning his keep. Absolutely no need to be anywhere else.
And I know it was 10 or so years ago, But who captained two crows premierships? Who is captain now? Which single 'feeder' team had the most onfield players in those two premierships?
Hmmm. The Panthers have been pretty bloody handy when it comes to the success of the Crows. Otten stays where he is.
