Listening to Malcolm’s special comments during the Westcoast/Collingwood game – I realized one thing: M Blight is a total air-head. The comments he was coming up with, was totally embarrassing and made no sense.

He kept on spouting theories that went nowhere. Either senility has crept in, or he was always trying to hard – to be different.

I thought Michael Voss was the only air-head doing special comments; now he has a friend.

Do geelong fans think he cost them a premiership ?

Uniquely among football commentators, TV, radio or print, Blight says things other people haven't said first and he doesn't say every week. Well worth him saying some flakey stuff now and then, if that's the price for the rest of what he brings. Like his coaching career, really.

I think St.Kilda worked out that he was a numbnut when they appointed him coach for about 2 months. If he is not good enough for St.Kulture, he isn't good enough for Freo!

In my opinion, no.

Of all the GF's we played off in, I think only '92 was winnable. In '89 the hawks were awesome, in '94 the eagles would have belted anyone the day we played them. "92 we let a good half time lead slip, but the eagles beat us 3 times already that yea I think so they had good form against us going into the game.

We really didn't have much of a defensive structure with any of those sides, and in hindsight this may have cost us a flag, but on the flipside if we didn't have the all out attack mentality like we did back then we probably wouldn't have progressed as far as we did?

Innovative coach, 'best defence is a great offence' type of coach. I really wonder what would have happened with Stkilda if they stuck with him as coach?

Robert Walls is by far the worst commentator on TV. He's a know all and boring and only acts like he knows everything after something has actually happened

i agree, i reckon he is good value. He cracks some jokes, says some things from left field.

At leats he does not say the same crap every weekend like walls, watson and schwarze.

Blight and Andrew Jarman on SEN are the best special comments men!

Thought he was ok Saturday. Correctly labelled Rhyce Shaw a top 20 player.

Haha. Jars is hilarious. The best is Glen Jakovich on Fox Sports. Dunstall, Healy and Parkin are good value as well. Walls is getting too old. I don't mind Ox cause he sounds like a good bloke on SEN. You can't take Blighty seriously. Darcy and Voss are probably the worse. Buckley speaks well but can be overly negative at times.
And on commentators I wish 7 would bring Sandy Roberts back. I liked listening to him back before 7 lost the rights.

Legend, tries as hard as he can every week to make a fool out of himself, gets points from me. Nothing better than successful people that don't take life seriously.

He is great value. He doesn't heap praise where it isn't due, or lay the boot in where it isn't earned.

At times, he struggles to get tie words to his ideas, and get them out there... the whole "10 goals in front" thing from WCE v Pies is an example, but he is a unique footy brain.

I reckon he tries to be too analytical as a commentator and when he realises his speak has painted him into a corner he gets grumpy with shit like "wheres the game going blah blah blah"

a numnut some say, wish i was that stupid and coached in 5 grand finals and won 2 flags as well as being in the best 20 players to have played the game, yeah the guy has no idea, pfft

clearly one of the smartest guys in the game, unique no doubt but someone who knows how to get the job done as a player and coach, just love some of his coaching antics over the years.

I always kind of picture him commentating from his spa in Cairns with a scoob in his hand. I have a real hard time with Lane Voss & Walls, so I'm happy they've got some guys on 10 I like, being Blight & Huddo. Quarterbrain & Christian I find sufficiently adequate to basically not notice.

Many people start to 'lose their marbles in old age'. There is no doubt that he was a champion player and good coach. In saying that, many also thought he should have won more premierships with the cattle he had?.
Unfortunetly for Malcolm these days he is about as sharp as a bowling ball and it comes across in his special comments occasionally. He is in the same mould as Robert Walls....they were once great warriors but now appear past it according to some fans.

BTW, also loved some of his coaching stunts, particularily cowboys and Indians:D

Do geelong fans think he cost them a premiership ?

Maybe in 1993. In reaction to the prelim final loss in 1991 and GF loss in 1992 he designed a more accountable style of play that didn't gel with the players. they spent the bulk of the season losing games they should have won because of this

After a player revolt, they went back to plan A and beat every team in the top 5 only to finish a game outside the finals. Last year of the top 5 by the way...

But every other year you can put it down to the players fault

More like St Kilda cost themselves a premiership when they let him go.

This says more about St.Kilda then it does about Blight.

Blight will go down as one of the top couple of coaches in the modern era yet St.Kilda let him go after 8 weeks. It was a huge mistake on their behalf.

The club would be in a lot better position than it is today if he were given the chance to see his plans through.

There is no way the Saints made the decision to get rid of him lightly after they went to all the effort of getting him. They were flying players and officials to the Gold Coast for personal meetings and offered him a massive contract! A few weeks into his tenure they could see massive cracks developing and he was going to take them 10 steps backward!

OH MY GOD, I am not the only one who thinks this.

I can't stand him either. Thank God.

As for Blighty. GF's in 89, 92, 94, 97 & 98 5 GF's winning 2 is a pretty good coach to me.

yes he's different but he makes it interest also, the Saints would have made a GF under him, maybe not have won, but I would say would have got there.

If St Kilda didnt sack him, Blight would have left anyway.

His heart wasnt in it.

Getting so close with Geelong, gave him extra drive in Adelaide, but once that was over, he'd climbed everest, and just by the effort St Kilda had to go to to get him, you could tell he wasnt prepared to climb again.

Blight is a legend and is definitely my favourite comments man. I agree with lots of what he says, and even when i don't, at least what he said was interesting! Unlike guys like Voss, Schwarz, Darcy.

I also enjoy when he constantly wrecks Voss by asking him what he would do as a coach. That is always hilarious.

On the St Kilda issue, they never should have hired him under those conditions. It was there own fault. Fair enough, approach the great man but it was so obvious that he wasn't interested from day 1.

IF he did in fact say that Rhyce Shaw is in the top 20 players in the league the he has well and truly lost his mind.

However, I suspect that he may in fact have been referring to Heath Shaw, in which case, he's still pushing it a little.
20-50 perhaps but certainly not in the top 20.
