34,000 people play in structured competitions globally across Junior, Youth and Senior level
More than 30 structured leagues exist
The game is played in over 30 countries
One for the international board .
Lot's more of that sort of thing there .
This is really the AFL expansion (within Australia) board .

Umm - the Forum subheading for The Expansion board states "From Carrara to Penrith and Dublin to Port Stanley".

tounge in cheek surely.
Let's not confuse expansion of the sport of Australian rules football with the expansion of the Australian Football League (AFL) - that is something that well and truly belongs only to our naive northern counterparts.
I'm not averse to the odd international posting on the main board though, if it concerns the AFL.

Hate it when people say its played in over X amount of countries. No, its played one country. If they have a professional league, then its played in that country. Ffs, lawn bowls, darts, [whatever] is played in over 30 countries, but how does that give it any credibility?
Show me a league back by money, media, and so forth, and Ill give you a thumbs up

If your criteria is a highly professional league , then yes .
The truth is it is played in varying degrees around the world.
And it is important to differentiate .
It's the national game of Nauru , but you would say the game is more
importantly played in the PNG with a pathway to the AFL via the AFLQ with Papuans playing in QLD represtitive teams .
There's 10k juniors playing in the RSA , that's going to be important as a recruiting ground .Four AFL clubs have zones there .
With the emphasis on recruitment with the introduction of GC and WS other countries do have an increasing importance .
If you look at Toronto they have a 10 team league playing full 18-a-side
with radio coverage , small print coverage and an impressive array of sponsors .
No , it's nothing like the AFL but while Australian Football grows in quantity and quality around the world that is encouraging .
And I don't see the point in pointing out the obvious .

AFL and Melb FC are dreaming when it comes to China.
I know one of the Chinese guys who was helping Melbourne - he said there's just not enough space over there for the large grounds we need.
If you want to develop the game there you need lots of grounds. Alternative is you do what they do in the US and play 9 a side footy on smaller grounds.

Gound venues is not a uncommon scenario .
Like you say 9-a-side is one solution .
But a starting point seems to be universities and they do seem to have the
extra space required .
But , the main thrust of the venture is firstly coporate support
and building an affinity for our game , TV consumption .
Chinese playing Australian Football is a big bonus .
You need only to win over an incredably small percentage of Chinese people
and the results are huge .

She says, he says .... geez
have you ever thought that they might come from one of the big cities ?
do you ever roll your eyes when some yank asks you if you have a kangaroo jumping round your back yard in suburban Sydney ?
There are plenty of places in China where the population density is just as low as Queensland or Tasmania ....

And these places still have plenty of space and more importantly - large populations.
The guys promoting footy in Tianjin are right on the money, not only is it a big city, has tall kids looking for solutions to obesity, but is in close proximity to some of these areas.
For example, Hebei and Liaoning have smaller population densities than Gauteng Province in South Africa where footy is currently taking off. There are an abundance of cricket grounds in South Africa, with similar populations to China.
Think of how big footy is in country areas of Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania to a lesser extent in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory and you can see that there is plenty of potential and plenty of space for grounds.
Afterall, they had the space to build this ....

anything is possible !
