Bendigo ready for win with Gumbleton back

Scott Gumbleton will make his first appearance for the season when he returns to competitive football for Bendigo as they take on bottom of the table Box Hill Hawks on Monday at Box Hill City Oval. After suffering a knee injury and hamstring strain earlier this year, Gumbleton has completed almost three months of rehabilitation and will finally make his return through Essendon’s VFL affiliate.
Taken at Pick 2 in the 2006 National Draft, Gumbleton excited Bomber fans with his five senior games last year and they will be eager to see how he performs in his first outing for 2008, with the prospect of him soon returning to the senior Essendon side.
Coach Matthew Knights said Gumbleton - who has been named on the wing - is expected to play between 60 and 70 minutes of football for Bendigo. He will be a big "in" for a team that continues to show signs of improvement despite only two wins for the season.
In the past two rounds Bendigo trailed top of the table Williamstown by only two goals going into the final term before eventually going down by six goals and led Coburg by eight points at half-time before losing by 51-points.
While the two second half fade-outs are a concern, the impressive early quarters indicate that the team is heading in the right direction.

A consistent four quarter effort is now the major focus as Bendigo has shown the ability to compete and be successful against the best sides in the competition.

The winless Box Hill has been close on several occasions in the first half of the season and while they will provide another tough game for Bendigo, the Bombers are a good chance to take the points on Monday.

I almost have as much interest in this match coz Gumby could have a big part to play in our future if he gets his body right... we have all heard the ridiculous comparisons to carey, but hopefully a couple of solid games in the VFL and he'll bounce straight back up to the seniors

He's much stonger then last year, you can really tell the difference around his neck and shoulders. He'll always have an athletic and wiry build.

Listening to the radio coverage on 94.1 FM 3WBC. Obviously listening out for Gumbleton and pleased to hear him getting a couple of marks and possessions. Quarter time and the commentators specifically said Gumbleton was playing quite well. Unsure whether this has to do with him being a high pick or because he genuinely stood out. Promising first quarter. Playing on the wing I think.

Apparently Barry Mitchell who is coach of the Box Hill team singled out Gumbleton as one that the players should try to block out. Must be making some sort of impact:thumbsu:

Gumbleton might have moved to the ruck. Just won a tapout before.
I know what you mean Spikey, but it would be great if he played himself into some good form leaving Knights no choice but to put him into the seniors in the next 3-5 weeks.

I would be tempted to bring Gumbleton in as the 2nd ruck. He would be more useful than Bellchambers and if Mitch Clark can play that role I don't see why Gumby can't.

Mal has been alright. Playing on Dowler. Wasnt he a high pick for Hawthorn in recent years? Not sure what happened with the reserves.

Gumbleton kicked a goal 2 minutes ago:D. Playing on Dawson. Oh he just kicked another one:D Sorry guys. Might be getting a bit pedantic but I cant restrain myself. Gumbleton is playing quite well. Bombers up by 3-5 goals.

Agreed. Nah he is doing well considering it is his first hitout in a long time. Bombers up by 24 at half time. Mal has been alright. Johns serviceable. Peverill seems to have been promiment. Atkinson serviceable. Hooker quiet. Knights is at the game. McPhee and Neagle also. At quarter time Knights went and had a chat with the coaching staff. Heard earlier in the week that Gumby will only get 60-80 minutes game time. Hopefully he plays out at least one more quarter and slots through a couple more goals. Both lovely kicks over the goal umpires head.

Gumbleton has kicked 2, was good in the first half. Rama's playing alright and Laycock isn't playing. Michael and Peverill have been pretty good, and Hooker's kicked 2 as well.

Score is Bombers 106 to Box Hill 78

good game by the Bendigo Bombers. Led all day and were never really challenged.

Gumbleton was ok, got through, kicked quite nicely. Would have been nice to see him kick a goal from the boundary a long way out late in the 2nd too, but it didn't quite come off. 2 goals was a good return though.

He created some presence, but seemed to blow a bit, and didn't always run to the right spot. He'll be better for the run though, and it was good to see him playing on the wing for mine. Got some run into his legs, although I thought he looked nice when he went forwards too.

I was surprised I have to say by the presence of Hooker. He caught my eye today; he's a really big unit, surprisingly so. Floated around a bit, but moved quite nicely and took a few grabs, got a few goals. I know he was speculative, but he looks to have a fair bit of potential.

Micheal was good, singled out by the coach at 3/4 time for the work he was doing; and Rama was really busy - he got a lot of the ball and just looked to be a class above.

Atkinson handy as well, Pev busy, didn't really notice much of Magin. Johns was just ok.

The rain stayed away, and all in all it was a really good day to sink a few cans, see Gumby's return match, and be able to walk home :thumbsu:

That was close to the best game Hooker has played. He gained a bit of confidence early on taking a couple of nice grabs that in previous weeks he had been dropping.

9 Jun 2008, 17:44
Gumbleton was pretty good. He was rotated on and off the bench a bit and had a strong first half. His second half was not as good but he did what he had to do. Got to run around on the wing and pick up a few kicks before going forward later in the game. Did not dominate but did what he needed to.

Peverill was reasonably busy. Would not say it is the best game i have seen him play but he was ok. I can tell you one thing , the shepherd has completly gone from his game. He looks for a lot of cheap handballs now days.

Rama was solid all day. Had the skill and patience to find a bit of space at this level. Was probably the best of the Essendon listed players.

Johns , ok. Played defense pretty much all day and stayed on the ground all game as well . He got caught behind his man a few times but his rebound out of defence was pretty good.

Williams was better but it was still a bit of a nothing game from him. Took a couple of nice marks.

Hooker , like i said previously was close to his best game. He shanked a few kicks but at least he took some grabs this week. He knows where to run to on the field to find the footy. He simply has to build his upper body strength so he doesnt get knocked out of the contest so easily. His workrate was good.

Magin had a bit of a quiet game. Did a couple of nice classy things at times but did not have a lot of the footy overall.

Atkinson got involved a bit during the day but he needs to use his speed more. He can look great dashing through the middle in some plays with the footy in his hands yet other times when he really needs to run hard to chase and tackle or make postion to recieve his work rate drops off.

Chartres played mainly ruck and was beaten in the ruck contest but had a reasonable day around the ground without making a huge stamp on the game.

Like Ant and Lance have said, Hooker was pretty good today. Took some nice grabs and converted well. Moves well for his size.

I thought Chartres was pretty good today against the odds. Played ruck all day and battled on. Kicked a nice goal, took some grabs and is a pretty good user of the ball. I wonder what the future holds for him.

Magin was ok, looked pretty classy when he had the ball and defensively was also pretty good.

I thought Atkinson used the ball alot better today and his decision making was the best all year. Got amongst the goals in the last qrt.

Gumby got smashed early on in a marking contest (Apparently he had a corked quad) after that he was solid contributor. It was good to see him get through unscathed. :thumbsu:

Rama was classy, Pev was Pev and Mal was a rock in defence.

Nice for Hickey to get another win under his belt. :D

Stuff like "where's ya ugly dreads, johns?" "geez you suck johns" "hows it feel to let through a goal you loser"

But they were so same idiots who told the umpires they should jump the fence and get the ball themselves instead of asking the kid who had it for it because they get paid. All that one of them said all day was "keep working hawks." Bloody hell they gave me the sh*ts, glad the guy filming the match on the tower punched the ball and hit one of them.

Im really liking the leadership and encouragement shown to the younger guys at the moment. In paticular Rama and Skipworth. There is more of a team feel on the ground compared to early in the season.

Mal was best for me. Dowler struggled to get a touch and Mal's attack on the ball was a big improvement from last game. Made one bad mistake but couldnt fault the rest of his match.

Hooker has played 2 good games now that Ive seen but today was the best. Some of the marks he took were very good but brain fades and stupid turnovers still featured. Kepler MK2

Gumby was sposed to be eased back in but ended up playing close to 4 qtrs. Got winded in a marking contest early. For someone who has missed a lot of footy it was pretty encouraging.

Rama was good, stepped up when it mattered.

Johns played on Digby Morell and kept him pretty quiet. Morell is a good VFL player. Got a lot of work done on his right hamstring every time he came off. At one point he did a one hand pick-up on the boundary and hit up Gumby lace out. One of the few players that consistantly plays well in the VFL.

Pev got plenty of touches and ran hard and wide. Hard to see where he could break into the seniors now with Myers and Lonergan playing on-ball.

Chartres got beaten esily in the hit outs but for a bloke who isnt a ruckman really made a big effort to be competiitve and wasnt disgraced.

Ali Fahour deserves a mention for having the best game he could possibly play. Thought it was a different person, till he kicked the ball.

Negative. Good to see a lot of supporters there today but some hero in the last qtr decided to yell 'Get a kick Pev' after he had just come off for a rest when he had easily been in the better players all match. Next time go stand on the Highway and yell out at cars you clown. Most of the senior players heard it and it was good to see McPhee turned around and gave him a mouthful.

When i saw him in his first hitout in that Intraclub game at Cranbourne 3 things really stood out for me.

1: He is quite similar to kep in the way he moves
2: He knows exactly where to lead on the ground and when to double back.
3: He knows when to lead and when not to.

I haven't seen much of him since but he isn't a dumb footballer at least.

The marks he took today were all clean one-grabbers and a few times people around me confused him for Gumby but there was a couple of times he was up the ground a bit and tried to centre the ball but kicked it staright to the opposition. The bench were really into him to concentrate harder straight after he did it so I think they've recognised the faults but some days he barely touches the ball. There is some good signs.

Was at the game, really good stuff.
Atkinson I thought showed great glimpses at times.
Hooker played preety consistently throughout all 4 quarters.
Gumby came off alot, but took a nice mark. Looked a bit unfit at times, but that what you would expect from an extremely interupted preseason.
Apart from that, spent most of the time talking to the players.

Badly winded. The question is do you bring him in or give him one more run in the ressies ? We have nothing to lose so I`d probably play him although with the game on Friday they`ll probably go the conservative way.
Atkinson is too good for this level , well worth another crack, hopefully he gets a go this Friday. That was like stepping back in time today, good feel to it.

I don't know how you can say we've got nothing to lose.

He could do his hamstring again due to being under-prepared and coming off a 5 day break. We could also lose the match because we are effectively half a man short due to him not being fit.

To my mind, we have everything to lose by playing him so early and nothing to gain.

Gumby has about a 1% chance of playing on Friday. Not only because of his lack of match fitness and injury worries, but because he would only be coming off a four day break. Same goes with all other players who played for Bendigo today. I would've thought that the only players that were a chance to come in this week were the ones coming back from injury (Watson, Neagle, Hislop etc)

Play for Bendigo, play for Essendon, either way he plays a game next weekend. I think they will be conservative and he`ll play one more at Bendigo. I`d play him v w.coast.

Playing for Bendigo vs playing seniors is completely different.

When you play reserves you get to play a more relaxed game as the intensity and pace isn't the same.

Also winning isn't as important, so your on field time can be managed far better.

When you play seniors, you are playing at full intensity, busting a gut and putting maximum strain on your body.

They are completely different scenarios and as i mentioned in another thread the suggestion of Gumby coming in this week is one of the most ridiculous of recent times, and that's saying something.

And as previously mentioned a 4 day break.

Leave him in the reserves this week and bring him back in for Carlton

At least 3 more games at VFL before he gets a call up.

Playing for Bendigo vs playing seniors is completely different.

When you play reserves you get to play a more relaxed game as the intensity and pace isn't the same.

Also winning isn't as important, so your on field time can be managed far better.

Don`t agree Merv. Have a look at how Davey did his knee and where Gumby did the injury he`s currently coming back from. Training ! And he took two big hits today, I felt the first one, yeah he was badly winded, but for a couple of seconds there !!!!

It isn't about getting injured it is about coming back from Soft Tissue injuries and especially when the only game you have played all year was round 1 of the NAB Cup.

*Injuries can happen anywhere, especially ligaments etc but you will also find that many many more soft tissue injuries happen in seniors rather than reserves.*

For a start the pace of the game in the VFL is just a little below what will be going on on Friday night.
Secondly it is not the knee problem they will be concerned about. Knee or no knee the kid still has a history of having hammy problems now. They would be crazy to bring him back into the seniors off a short break and after one game where he was rotated off the bench every quarter.

I agree.

With virtually no footy this year he'd need at least 5 or 6 weeks to get match fit.

^^ he's gonna need a few weeks at least to get his fitness up to scratch I'd have thought, having seen him yesterday

Gotta give Gumby a couple more at least i'd think.

Can anyone tell me how Skipworth went?
And also how's he been going?
When i saw him on the list i thought he could be one to go back onto an afl list if he could stay injury free...got talent.

And Daniher...injured one would presume?
Anyone know what the go is there?

:D

Knighta hinted that he might bring Gumby back in for Carlton.
He has been train well for more than 2 weeks so it doesn't sound unreasonable.

. That was like stepping back in time today, good feel to it.

Its amazing what a win can do for the players, and supporters alike. It's nearly worth dropping the odd place or two in the draft.

You can control it better at VFL level though. Eg, play a half, or sit on the bench for the rest of the game if they are getting tight. Cannot afford that at senior level.

Apparantly Gumby is off to hospital with a shoulder injury. FFS, The kid can't take a trick. Ridiculous.
