I have been watching the game today on the TV, as we have to do when the Game is away.
The laws of the Game have changed into something that resembles touch footy.
I have grown bored of going and/or watching the footy. The Game is reverting into a non-contact sport.
I have decided to go back and watch the B.L & G. League.
This is where the real footy is at.
I will follow my boys through the paper but that's about as far as it goes from now on.
Yes, I agree in large part. How about when that Richmond player brushed his hair across I think it was Basset's guernsey and got a free. OMG!!! Such soft frees these days, it is very frustrating.

Don't grab his jumper and he will just run off anyway, it's absolutely pathetic. If you tackle him to the ground fair enough but a little jumper pull is nothing. It's just a free goal.

The ____ing rules get changed without any thought as to the flow-on effects, that's what's wrecking it.
If you touch a man after he's marked it, you give away 50. So now, when a player takes a mark, he feints as if he's going to play-on, get's touched, and then get's a 50m.
Dragging the ball in will get you pinged for holding the ball. So now, instead of desperately diving onto a ball, players sit back, wait for their opponent to take it, then tackle and get a free.
If you touch a guy above the head, anywhere, anyway, he'll get a free. So now, as Burton said, players deliberately (and in concert with the holding the ball interpretation) stand over the ball, with their head in a position where it will get hit and a free given.
I still love the game, but the ____ing rules committee need to pull their heads in. They change a rule to fix a problem, but they think it through so poorly, that the new rule brings about it's own set of problems.

Only against the Crows Richmond can do that all they want
That was an absolute shocker ... he was so obviously going to play on and all Stevens did was grab the jumper very lightly within a second of the mark being taken. At least the commentators had total empathy for that one.
The worst ones are when players headbutt a stationary leg and they get a free ... grrrr .... and yet they still will not pay kicking in danger which is just a total contradiction .... double grrrrr!!!!!

The problem starts from the Top. The umpires seem immune to any criticism , and are virtually immune from being dumped. The administration is in Victoria, run by Victorians, who do you think they will umpire to keep happy??
The Richmond game is a prime example. I'd be surprised if they dont sing Richmonds song with them, should they win.

You are dead on with all of this.
Did anyone here Demetriou's interview on 5AA last nite? He was questioned about the rule in regards to reports for head high contact - he basically said that they had made the rules and punishments for head high contact a lot more severe to cater to all the new converts to Australian Rules who have never known any better. He conceded that there are probably more people against the new interpretations than for them but it is apparently all about bringing in the new supporters, and stuff the traditions of the game and the ex players and fans who made the game what it is.
Exactly what I would expect from the CEO who will be getting a bonus based on the success of the AFL's expansion and never mind the fabrice of the game. BOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with everything you have typed.
It makes me consider whether it is a protection scheme brought on by the AFLPA or the League itself.
It is now a career, to be an AFL player.
Is the AFL protecting themselves against claims?

Great post. Completely agree. Umpires blow the whistle all too often. Very frustrating. Sooner Demetriou leaves the AFL, the better:mad::thumbsd:

Like I've said in another thread, giving them mics is the worst thing the AFL could have done, now they think they are Bollywood stars.

That may well be contributing to the declining standard of umpiring nowadays. I love footy too much to stop watching it, but it is infuriating hearing the whistle blow every few seconds, the majority of free kicks being little soft ones that could easily be called play on. Arrgghhh. The Rules Committee admittedly is 99% to blame. First it was chopping of the arms. Then hands in the back. Now it is the holding the ball rule. There are others too like when an defender brushes his arm across the shoulders of his opponent:mad: It is turning into a serious problem. Hopefully over the next few years the situation improves.

The main problem is just the fact that they over-umpire it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say the third quarter was the one with the least amount of free kicks paid, and it was the one that was umpired the best.
Some of the free kicks they pick out are probably there by the letter of the law, but they'd be far better off just getting on with it - as long as they did so for both sides.
Far too many free kicks paid in modern footy. Far too many.
