I'm not getting into who's the best player in the league, but here's the premise.
A new league has been created and all current AFL player contracts have been voided. You are starting your new team from scratch and have first pick of all afl players in the first ever total player draft. There's 20 teams in this new league, so by the time you get your second pick, 19 other very very good footballers will be gone so it's very unlikely any of the options listed will still be available.
So who would you take as first player of all the current AFL players to start building a team. A forward, a back, a midfielder, a ruck?
Does anyone else think there is 1 player here not quite worthy...

Yeah I reckon, Ablett is just living off his fathers name :p
But yes I can't see too many people picking sandilands. I think the OP was going for 2 mids, 2 ruck and 2 forwards
Anyway I picked Franklin because he's young and you could build a team around him.

LOL, yeah I put Sandilands in for a reason. Cox is the best ruck in the league ATM. Sandilands can get first hand on the ball at almost every hit out. If you were going to load up a team with class midfielders, someone like him could give them an armchair ride. As far as being one of the best players in the league, no argument, but that wasn't where I was going. All depends on what you value, feel free not to vote for him.

at the moment, you would have to say either ablett or franklin but if judd can reach his peak fitness again i think he'd be the one i'd want most.

it's amazing how quickly people forget how good judd is when he is at full fitness.

He has 10 votes... what are you talking about?
Anyway, I picked Ablett. An absolute freak-show. Despite gun forwards being more rare, and seemingly more important, gun midfields seem to win the premierships.

would be out of cox and franklin for mine
went with cox though
I went Franklin in that you build a side around him.
The next few picks of mine would be mids though.
I picked cox but i change my mind and would like brown although picking the coach is absolute priority. You can have the best team in the world but if the coach is shit you are gonna go backwards. Just look at what happened to freo and St. Kilda.
Leigh Matthews would be the very first person I sign up.

Factors that influence the decision are age (great factor) and the long-term risks.
First picked would be Buddy - he's the youngest and equal best - but since he is more of a risk than the others you may think again. Will he be a star in 10 years? 5 years? 3 years?
Judd provides an outstanding figurehead for your new club to get the $$$'s pouring in right away, but he won't be as good for as long (5 years of very good football as opposed to Buddy's possible 10 years of outstanding football).
Ablett over Judd because of injuries and body in better shape long term.
Jon Brown wouldn't be picked early. Three years ago Warren Tredrea would have been on this list and if you picked him back then you'd look pretty stupid right now!
If such a draft was held today then Trent Cotchin and Matthew Kreuzer would both be picked in the top 10.
15+ year players who have both proven to be likely superstars at AFL level could be valued higher than certain 3-5 year superstars if the risk is low enough.
But Buddy is the perfect position to be picked #1 right now.
