Big result this. Shows our junior development efforts in NSW and Sydney are starting to pay off and bodes well for the creation of a new club with at least 9 of the team from Sydney. Vic Country were beaten by Vic Metro by only 3 points a couple of weeks back so this makes this win even more meritorious.

That's a massive result, particularly after they got flogged by WA last week.
In saying that, I reckon travel would affect 16 & 17 year olds a lot more than AFL players, especially given they wouldn't have done much of it before.

They'd be even better with 9 goal Taylor Walker still running around for them.

In the past, a NSW/ACT team would have been thrashed by Vic Country, but we're seeing some good players come up now. Several of the players in the team were Scholarship players; and having the AFL clubs take responsibility for developing some talented players is having an impact.
A few years ago there was only one under-18s competition in Sydney with about 10 teams. We're up to 2 competitions now with a total of 18 teams; and at younger age groups the numbers continue to improve.
Huge result, more good signs for the second Sydney team.

Everything works out for Geelong.

Suprising result but fantastic news. Great to hear 9 of the team were from Sydney too. :thumbsu:

Bummer, I had intended to go to Henson Park and watch the match, look at Port's scholarship kid and as we usually recruit kids from Vic country look at some of them, but decided a lunch invite from a friend was a better deal. Would have been good to see the NSW kids fightback.
I think it is great to see the NSW/ACT team doing well as it means a greater chance of more NSW born and bred players making it onto a AFL teams list.

A fantastic result, but not entirely unexpected ... these kids are the leading edge of the talent programs that have been undertaken by the AFL in NSW over the past few years, and is being refined with the intro and endorsement by AFL clubs of the scholarship program ... there's also great anticipation around the current NSW/ACT u/16's, who recently flogged QLD by 20+ goals in a practice match ... the talent is there, and now the developement seems to be evolving ... the "traditional" AFL areas will not be amused!;)

What difference is it where the boys come from?
They all come from NSW/ACT, thats all that matters.
Was a great come back in the third quarter, when it looked at half time like the vics would run away with it.
Thrilling final term with the lead changing on 4 occasions and the look of utter disspear on the vics faces after the final siren said it all. The smiles on our boys faces made all the effort worthwhile.
One of the worse renditions of a song I have ever heard though, hard to get fired up when reading the words off a sheet. :D:D LOL
Bloody magic moment though.

SA got belted today by WA by an even bigger margin so there must be serious talent (Naitanui etc) in that WA team. Anyway, it makes the NSW/ACT boys efforts against the Sandgropers look not so bad.
The nine Sydney boys in the team are set out in this link:

Three players from Sydney (Ediriwickrama, Frail and Reed) were named in the team's six best. We all know that AF is the dominant sport along the Murray and in Broken Hill and is strong in the Riverina. However, seeing talented footballers emerge from Sydney demonstrates there is a real chance for strong growth of our game in the nation's largest and most difficult market.

Aussie Rule is and always has been the number one sport in a lot of southern NSW towns. Had they all come from the south it really wouldn't mean anything. So far Sydney has produced very few AFL players having the players come from Sydney or Northern NSW shows that sport in gaining ground at junior level in new areas.

Bloody hell, can't believe that.
I'll repeat who cares where they come from, they are NSW/ACT.
No one yesterday could remember the last time a NSW side had beaten a Vic side (at 18 lebel) why try and segrgate it into areas of NSW?
Just lets rejoice together,:D
but if you want to get picky then the amount of work being done in Sydney compared to the rest of the state is about 1000 to 1.

Lets turn it round the other way then.
Fantastic that 13 boys who live in bush helped NSW/ACT to beat the Vics.
Great to see that many out of the city getting a chance to show their stuff!

The reason its important is because Sydney has basically been a black hole for top quality AFL players for 100+ years.
Southern NSW has not - heard of someone like Wayne Carey? Bet NSW/ACT would have gone alright when Wayne was Under 18 if they existed as a team back then.
Sydney is the black hole that needs to be filled - Southern NSW is a stronghold that needs to be maintained and built upon.
Its an important distinction and point mate.

This is a board about expansion and a club will be established in Western Sydney in 2012 - quality players emerging from that city for NSW (and possibly the AFL) are obviously a good sign for the Australian game in terms of overall interest, participation and attendance in the area where the new club will be based. I wouldn't say it doesn't mean anything in terms of the 13 players from elsewhere as we are in direct competition with RL in areas such as Wagga, Canberra and Temora who also supplied players for this team, but the 9 are particularly relevant.

Well summed up.
All up, its a staggering result, given that Vic country has been a powerhouse for years, and supplies stacks of draft picks each year. That 9 of those NSW players are also from Sydney is directly relevant to this AFL expansion board.
As already mentioned, Geelong already have a hold on the BOG, Ediriwickrama. Collngwood also has one of the other bests, Scott Reed, under the scholarship scheme.
Excellent news. Agree on 9 from Sydney as significant in terms of expansion. Vic Country would be spewin'.

How long do you reckon it would take for Victoria to defeat Country NSW in RugbyLeague in under-19s comp? :D

Bloody hell mate I reckon after we beat Brazil in soccer, i.e. never. This is a fantastic result for everybody that cares about Aussie rules and especially for all the true believers who have been battling away in Sydney for years. YOU LITTLE BEAUTY!!!

The lack of depth in Sydney football as recently as five or ten years ago was incredible. I realised the other week I must've played junior footy in games with Jarrad McVeigh, and possibly his brother, back when they were playing for Pennant Hills (round the u/14's-16's). The guys must've stood out like a sore thumb, considering most of the kids in the comp (myself very much included) could barely kick a footy straight more than 15 metres. Can't say I remember them, though - I was too busy remembering which direction I was meant to be running in.

An update on the NSW/ACT Rams - they followed up there shock win over Vic Country with a two goal victory over tasmania - 11.8.74 to 9.8.62.
I've shamelessly copied this from the Collingwood boards (courtesy of "The Royal Sampler')
"Vic Country proved you right this weekend, by handing WA their first loss of the carnival. It does make the Rams form look all the more impressive.
That leaves Vic Metro 3-0, WA and the Rams on 2-1, Vic Country and SA 1-2, and Tassie 0-3. The Rams have Vic Metro and SA to play on the 5th and the 9th of July, and on current form they should at least give SA a run for their money and have a real shot at a winning record for the carnival, which would be a remarkable outcome."
