View Full Version : Expansion The Perfect Name
Name:
THE GOLD COAST RUSH
Why: Because it relates to Australia's history and actually has relevance and meaning. Australias Gold Rush was one of the reason our civilisation are on this peice of GREAT dirt. So instead of using some cheesy American wanna-be names like 'Falcons' or 'Roosters' lets stick with something that breaths originality and pride.
I know this thread has been done, and i really should be posting in the other one. I feel if i do that, then a great name like this will just get lost in all of that 18 page rabble.
So keep this thread for names that have:
AUSTRALIAN'ism
Originality
History
Passion
Culture
Who knows maybe one of these names will pop up for a real chance for
the GC17 team.
Im Natanui and thats my take
NO.
NONONONO.
The worst proposal I have heard.
Not only is this the cheesiest name I have ever heard, the Gold rush was largely in Victoria. What the hell has it got to do with the Gold Coast, or even Queensland?
It's also impossible to market. What would their mascot be?
Sorry to break this to you, but your 'great' idea is no more valid than the others on that 18 page 'rabble'. Get over yourself.

There was gold found in Gympie, but given Gympie is a 4 hour drive from the Gold Coast, it bears no relevance to the Gold Coast.

There was also a gold rush near Cooktown, but again that has nothing to do with the Gold Coast.
My main point was that the cultural and historical relevance of the Gold Rush era (i.e, Eureka), was all from Victoria. Obviously there was gold found elsewhere, but it has minimal cultural and historical value.
You may as well call the new side the Gold Coast Federation, or Gold Cast First Fleets. Or the Gold Coast Secessionists, after WA voted to succeed in 1933.

Makes me think of adrenalin rush, which fits the coast with its waves, schoolies, and sporting teams. It could mean many things. I give it up my :thumbsu:

It can mean many things 'mate' not just the fact that the town conveiniantly has the word gold in it or it relates to All Australian history.
And as Genghiskhan said, Adrenaline, Waves etc.
So instead of being so single minded with your opinion, why don't you mention a name so i can at least give you my opinion and in return you will get your credibility back 'Fire' pfftt.. Nice name
It can mean many things 'mate' not just the fact that the town conveiniantly has the word gold in it or it relates to All Australian history.
What? The why make a thread advertising this? So you are willing to concede that the gold rush has no relevance tot he gold coast whatsoever?
And as Genghiskhan said, Adrenaline, Waves etc.
Cool. I still hate it. Why didn't you mention this in your first post? Adrenaline and waves have NOTHING to do with:
AUSTRALIAN'ism
Originality
History
Passion
Culture
You are shifting the goalposts on your own argument. Had you originally argued your point along these lines, I would not have responded with the points I did. The tone I used is in response to your superiority complex.
So instead of being so single minded with your opinion,
If my opinion of your idea offends you, then don't ask for it by posting in a public forum. What thin skin you have.
why don't you mention a name so i can at least give you my opinion
I have, in that 'rabble' of a thread you don’t deign to associate with, suggested a more traditional mascot (I think I named a Dragon, as a red and gold colour scheme I personally think would look aesthetically pleasing, be unique, easily marketable and lends towards an aggressive inspiring mascot like a Dragon). My main reasons for this is that generally, the most criticised mascots (rightly or wrongly) are either conceptual (like power, and in your example, 'rush'), or something else, Like an occupation (docker). While the traditional mascots, like Eagles, Lions, Tigers, etc. are more popular and less cheesy.
Feel free to criticise my opinion, as others on this board have. Some have argued that there is already an NRL team called the 'Dragons', and this may affect their identity in a developing market. Unlike you, I can handle criticism.
and in return you will get your credibility back
Credibility? This is an anonymous public forum. What credibility? Don’t overestimate yourself.
'Fire' pfftt.. Nice name
Grow up.
Im Natanui and thats my take
I'm KB, and you're stealing my lines.
I smell a fetish...
First 'Fire' then 'Dragon' what next?
Other than that it isn't bad, i do see it as a marketable name allthough the NRL have used it. It could work in Victoria because it isn't a NRL state where QLD is all NRL so it might clash abit.
I didn't shift my goal posts, i took Gegkhan's opinion on board and thought it was a decent input into the name. Brainstorming is the key in this case (creating a name for GC17) and thats exactly what Gegkhan did so don't pin it on me saying i strictly wanted these guide liones.
I just don't want Americanised shit basically. Lets keep it real, it's the best game in the world and it's our's, Australias.

It is impossible to ever come up with a name that suits everyone so don't worry about the criticism. For me, "rush" has a simple but effective emotional connotation. It is also innovative and different. I don't know what people are hoping to achieve with these alternatives like "Stingers", "rays", etc. Appeal to marketers? Inspire the team. Bah. Better to have no mascot than them.
For a logo, I wager you could go a blue wave breaking over a gold beach.
I smell a fetish...
First 'Fire' then 'Dragon' what next?
The last thing I said to you was "grow up".

Obviously, I am not a social researcher, so i can't say exactly what effect this would have on Gold Coasters.
However, the Melbourne Tigers don't seem to have a problem netting non-Richmond followers, and Melbourne is very much an AFL town. I don't think I have ever felt alienated from the MT simply because I support North.
If your teams colours and identity are markedly different, then i don't think that people will make a connection where none exists.
Though it would be interesting to see some research on this.

You did shift the goal posts. I was critical of your gold rush idea, which your ENTIRE post was based around.
and you responded with:
"It can mean many things 'mate' not just the fact that the town conveiniantly has the word gold in it or it relates to All Australian history."
This is so far removed from the first post that there is no point in trying to pretend that this is what i was responding to.
As a side note, from my perspective you simply like the Rush idea because you made it up, and will willingly accept any excuse to keep it. You were very quick to dump the gold rush concept to adopt a completely new approach to waves and adrenalin.
Really, this idea has no more:
AUSTRALIAN'ism
Originality
History
Passion
Culture
than concepts like the Gold Coast Heat, Gold Coast Suns, Gold Coast Breakers etc. that have populated the 18 page 'rabble' which you somehow think is beneath your own idea.
I just don't want Americanised shit basically. Lets keep it real, it's the best game in the world and it's oar’s, Australians.
I wholeheartedly agree with you.
However, it seems a perennial occurrence that people will label ideas they don't like as 'American'.
Mascots like the 'Broncos" are American. A Bronco is basically the American word for "Brumby". That’s basically stealing American identity/culture. Sure, its alliterative, but I bet most Brisbenistans have never heard of a Bronco before.
Mascots liek the "Suns", "heat", "lakers" etc. are American because they have been copied from famous American sporting teams.
From my perspective, concepts like "rush" ARE American. Its new, its buzzy, its intangible.
Others might not see it that way though, including yourself.
BTW, Carlton are in front? WTF?
At the first belting the head lines will read "RUSHED BEHINDS SPANKED".
the rush!!! hahah man that sucks.

So anything intangible is American? That must mean the Force, Roar, Victory and Glory are all American. I'm not sure if I agree with you that soccer is in love with American marketing.
Even if it were American, what is wrong with learning from an extremely successful country? If Geelong wins a premiership by playing on quickly, should other teams refuse to play on quickly because "that's the Geelong style of play." ?
You need to be more open-minded.

if you had bothered to do any research then you would know now that it will not be the Sharks. The Southport Sharks have already declared that, although they will be involved, they will not make a bid and they will be protecting their brand in the Queensland AFL. Nor will it be dolphins, as the Dolphin trademark belongs to the Redcliffe Dolphins, who previously prevented the Gold Coast rugby league club now known as Titans from using it.
It is good to see someone like Natanui come out with an original idea, and one that addresses the liabilities that everyone who wants to make an opinion on this issue should know about.

I am well aware that Southport have said that they will be protecting their brand genghis. It is my belief however that "The Gold Coast Sharks" is such a good fit that the new team will be able to talk Southport club around. I mean they are hardly going to be hugely damaged by having a new AFL club sharing their name. I would think it would be beneficial more than anything else.
And surely the Southport club wouldn't want to hinder development of Aussie Rules in the area just because of a petty name dispute would they? The "Gold Coast Sharks" is clearly the preferred option for most supporters, I think Southport will come around and do what is best for the game.

Until they come around, you must respect their decision. Taking it for granted that they will come around if you act like they will would be a persuasion technique that would be counter-productive.

Businesses have a much different attitude to the importance of protecting their intellectual property today than what they did 100 years ago when many Australian sporting teams got their names.

Yeah, non-physical noun mascots are uniquely North American. And they are f***ing disgusting. PA Power is an abomination of a name for such a famous club like they are.
You can take ideas from other countries, but never lose sight of the fact that AR markets itself on being an Aussie game. If it starts adopting American ways, it loses a part of this.
