...of the modern era
We've had Brisbane
-Charman(R) + Voss,Black,Lappin,Akermanis
-We've had West Coast
-Cox(R) + Judd,Cousins,Kerr,Embley
-We have currently Geelong
-Ottens(R) + Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Ling
Which is the best?

For me it's out of Brisbane or WCE
Leaning towards west coast due to Cox, but taking away from that is that out of the 8 superstars (Voss, Lappin, Black, Akermanis, Judd, Cousins, Kerr, EMBLEY looks out of place)
So WCE but only just. Sometimes it saddens me that they didn't stay together; they had the makings of a dynasty.
brisbane easily, Black, Voss and Aka and lappin was the best midfield ever to play the game

How long was Charman ruck to all of those Brisbane mids together? Would have been more Keating wouldn't it?

Yes you are right.
na bulldogs (Hudson, cooney, cross, griffen, boyd)
Lions 01 -04 midfield hands down.

Keating was the number 1 ruck, with Beau McDonald number 2.
Don't forget some bloke named Luke Power used to run around with them too.
If you take out ruckmen then Brisbane over WCE, but as ruckman are included WCE - none of the others come close to Cox.

They had a truly amazing team, its no wonder they won 3 in a row
Leppitch, Micheal down back
Keating, Voss, Aker, Lappin, Black, Power in the guts
Brown, Bradshaw, Lynch up foward
plus hard nuts like pyke, chris johnson, the scott brothers
i used to love watching them play
we mostly had the wood over the lions in our midfield battles from 2002-2006 (when all those players were playing).
braun, fletcher (remember he used to be good) and stinga in there too.
although brisbanes overall team was much better than our 06 premiership one...we still managed to keep beating them somehow though.

I actually think West of '05 and '06 probably shade the Brisbane midfield of '01 - '04. Sure Brisbane were a phenomenal team, but they won three in a row because they were also great on the FB line, the HB line, the HF line and the FF line. West Coast made two grannies, and won one of them due solely to their onball unit. Cox is better than Keating/Charman. Judd was a more effective individual player than any of the Lions' 5. Kerr and Cousins during that period were good enough to hold WC's end of the bargain up Vs Aker/Lappin//Black etc...
Geelong is obviously behind these two. Though if Ottens plays the second half to this season like he did '07, Ablett keeps it up for another few years, and Bartel shakes his current niggles and goes down as one of the categorically worthy Brownlow winners, the Cat's onball division of '07 - '09 wouldn't be entirely unworthy of the comparison.
Judd, Cousins, Kerr - only know you're seeing how important they were. :(
Meh, I'm an Eagles supportter so of course I was always going to say this.

If we are basing it on the top 4 midfielders, then probably WC (Cox, Judd, Cousins, Kerr).
However, if we are looking at an entire midfield unit then Brisbane. Voss, Lappin, Black, Power, Keating, Akermanis.

Where is the 'other' option.
C. Ackland, J. Bannister, S. Wiggins and J. Saddington.
